OK, I am so there for this one.  I haven't watched it in a couple of years since I have been waiting for it to make it to HD.

It's current sale price at Amazon is 18.99

Thanks Robert.  For under $20 its a no brainer for a pre-order.

Glad it's including that recut of the film.  Much better film that way.

I'm happy with my DVD set of that...still...  when this drops in price I won't be able to resist.  Very interested in seeing some comparison shots (like dvdbeaver does) of the DVD vs. BD.  :D  Like...today!  :D

Yikes, that cover...I may just slip the new discs into the old packaging, which Scott at least "signed off" on.

Yeah, I was thinking to myself that its a good thing that I just see the spines when they are on the shelf.

That cover could be worse and we all know it.  he bottom image isn't bad.  But those heads.  Damn.  Why don't they just stop that!  I guess the designer thinks we like getting heads!

bad coverart, and this is why the current crop of artist and art/posters and ads for films, suck any more, are we ever going to have another Richard Amsel, Bob Peak or Drew Struzan

no in the future we will be subjected to some bad Photoshop mess, and the idea that you have to throw the stars face or big heads on a small blu ray box to get people to notice the title, sends the wrong message. Much like the Star Wars prequels, why go to all the trouble to have such great poster art to do a past job for the DVD’s.

Universal could have done the right thing and used this.

Count me in.

Always good to see more Ridley Scott & Tangerine Dream

They should have reused the cover art from the old deluxe dvd version, which I think is quite beautiful. Btw, did anyone notice anything new in this version or is it pretty much a high-def version of the previous release?

I chuckled at what that ALMOST said smile.gif

I agree that this cover art pales to what has been used before for this film. I think the feeling is that people will notice familiar actor faces more than intriguing art - but I also think that the artistry skills are falling way short.

I wish that more of these catalogue releases would go back to the original poster art!

I don't know--maybe it's because bluray cases are a little smaller than dvds and they feel the need to cram more into less space. But these crap covers are getting out of hand. I think we need to start a "Blu Raspberry" award ceremonies for crummy-looking bluray covers. No doubt, this year's winner will be "The Greatest Story Ever Told," but if they don't take off that blocky "2 Versions of the movie" blurb, then "Legend" will also be high on the list...!

Shameful cover and a flipper disc :\

A flipper?  Are you sure?  The specs listed above say "BD-50 (Single Sided)."

Also seems to list everything on Side A.

I never did buy the DVD of this, so this one will be mine. Oh yes indeed! BWAA HA HA HAAA!  MINE MINE MINE!

I'm extremely glad that both the director's cut & U.S. theatrical version are included, but also disappointed (but not surprised) that the international theatrical version is not.  That's how I first saw Legend (via the Japanese DVD), and I'd like to have that version on Blu-ray, too.

I know this isn't what you really wanted, but Amazon UK has a Legend Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox up for pre-order (coming out in October):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Legend-Blu-ray-Tom-Cruise/dp/B004UPTXA4/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1306610321&sr=1-1

I guess this is the European Cut. I'm sure Universal's not including it on their release has to do with the rights; Fox still owns that cut of the film.

As a side note, I don't like to complain about cover art too much, but even as a "head-collage," that UK art is so much better than the US version. At least it looks like some genuine care went into the arrangement of the images. Of course, any of the original poster art that has been used on previous releases would have been better still.

I've always loved this movie, but I'm fully aware of its flaws, and I actually don't think a perfect version exists. The European Cut retains Jerry Goldsmith's score, but it is horribly butchered with absolutely awful music edits. The American Cut has way too much hacked out, but some of the internal editing of certain scenes is a little more fine-tuned than in the European Cut. But of course, there's no Jerry Goldsmith. (Sorry, Dream fans; I like some of their music, but Goldsmith's score is infinitely more textured and much more appropriate.)

The Director's Cut is obviously the best of the three, but the more I learn about film editing, the more I realize that the DC never went through a proper "fine cut." I may be wrong, but I think it is almost exactly the version that was test-screened in LA in 1985. Even if they hadn't "changed directions," and removed so much, there still might have been some tightening-up of certain things that would have made the overall film better.

Still, greatly looking forward to seeing this in HD :)  Are there any reviews out there yet?

Thats just the way Universal lists the specs on their press site.  If there is no side B listed then it is NOT a flipper.

Universal isn't sending this out for review.....I wouldn't read anything into that, they do it a lot with catalog titles, so we will have to see what people think on Tuesday.

i was going through the dvd bins at my local Zellers and through endless piles of junk movies,i found the 2-disc Legend.Bought it for 6.99,figured the ton of extras, the isolated score

and the always fascinating Ridley Scott commentary would help me wait till the BD comes out.

Anyone listen to that making-of and What Ridley Scott did the minute after the forest set burned down to a crisp ? It's hilarious and worth listening to.

Also, maybe i'm just slow but i can't figure out how to access that dvd-rom feature with the script ....anybody's ever got it ?

It had been quite a while since i had seen it and there a time in the 80's we would be 8-10 people and have a VHS Legend movie night every 6 months.

Just found out that Mia Sara was only 15 in this.

I had forgotten how between his werewolf from The howling and his cowboy from Innerspace,Robert Picardo had a cool role as Meg Mucklebones.

Best devil-like villain ever  of course goes to Tim Curry who you can still totally see under that ton of makeup.

And Annabelle Lanyon for best pixie/fairie because of the fact she's not all nice and cute, she's got a mean streak about her if you cross her.

I think it looked fantastic. There's a disclaimer at the beginning of the Director's Cut version that talked about that version not being in the best shape but I thought the parts I skimmed through mostly looked great. This film was made for hi-def. Also, I discarded the ugly packaging and put the disc in the old Ultimate Edition DVD case, the one with the clear flap. For $15, this is a must-have.

Well, at $14, on Amazon right now, this is a decent pickup at a cheap price.   So no problem there!

A note from Ridley Scott regarding the theatrical cut of the film(plays at the beginning of the theatrical feature):

"The final theatrical version of Legend was transferred by Universal in 2006 directly from the film's inter-negative.  Although I was not involved in this transfer, it displays a much more detailed, and refined image than the director's cut.  Considering the significantly different source elements, and transfer processes involved, it's safe to say each version of Legend has it's strengths, and I leave it to you to decide which one you think is best."

That being said, I just watched the theatrical version and it is beautiful.

Sweet Christmas, It is really something.

there was some sort of confusion in my head as i skimmed throught the posts, the only things i remember seeing

were in Bryan Tuck's post abour pre-order and October.Thats why i bought the 2-disc for 6.99 this week ..oh well..i'm

sure this will make a nice gift for someone i know.

So yes,i was quite happy to find the blu this morning on the new releases shelf.

so about that script to screen feature ?......anyone ....Bueller ?

any good reviews posted so far ?

This is an extremely nit-picky thing, but has anyone noticed the slight audio differences between the Theatrical Cut on the Blu-ray and what was on the DVD? In the opening Darkness scene, when he says "Something troubles me," you should hear the opening of the Unicorn theme, but it's gone on the Blu-ray. Also the music transition into the next scene doesn't crossfade like it did in the 2-channel mix. There are probably some other examples, but that's all I've noticed so far.

Could this 5.1 track be based on a 70mm mix? I wonder if this would account for the missing music on the Last Starfighter BD as well. Things like this aren't huge deals, I guess, but it sure would be nice if they'd include the original (35mm) 2-channel mix if this is the case.

Those kinds of audio differences always concern me. It might be something innocuous, as you speculate, but I sure would like to have a more definitive answer about those changes.
