Unreal Engine 3 Blows the doors off..

Thread Starter

People had been wondering when "Next-Gen" level graphics and physics would come to a PC.. when Epic began showing off their Unreal Engine 3.    Unreal Engine 2 is what powers games like "Mass Effect" etc.

This is their first next generation graphics engine. They say the videos as show below are NOT pre-rendered, but rendered through the engine. If so, this may be one of those jumps forward like Doom to Quake. The impact of how the characters look and feel is incredible. They are showing this on a PC running tri-SLI.

I'm going to be honest, a game that really takes advantage of graphics that are this good will either be extremely short, not very good, or cost $80.  I'm really not that impressed.  I'd rather have innovation in how you play, what you can do, etc. than just have better graphics.  I also think Epic is not a very good game developer, even if their engines are good.

I suppose the real question here is when someone will develop a great game using this new engine. (Also, in which decade will I acquire a PC capable of running it? :) )

I don't think it will be able to beat the new CryEngine2 features tho check this out!

WTB winning lottery ticket to build PC that would actually run it at playable FPS.

I don't think that's really the issue that Crysis1 was.  Moderate machines can run it well from what I understand.  Had a blast playing the first hour last night, it's easily one of the best games on 360 so far!

That's a crazy demo reel! Amazing visuals. Granted, I'm not current on top-end PC gaming; I'm an Xbox 360 player these days, having last played Bioshock on the PC.

But having just played Fallout 3, I'd love to have such a game married to this level of graphics. The many conversations in Fallout were made less engaging by the modest player models and utter lack of facial and body language. Having conversations with actual emotional queues would be a remarkable experience!

But I doubt I'll get anything like this in my games until next gen consoles.

What the hell? Everytime I quote something the accompanying post disappears. I originally asked what is considered a "moderate" machine now? Presently, I'm running a laptop with a 2.4 GHz quad core processor, 4 GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics card.

I might try the PC version since it is cheaper than the console version; although, I'm not too fussy for keyboard controls. I prefer using game pads. Have to admit, I wasn't all that impressed with the first one. I hope the second one is better.

Pretty sure you can use the wired 360 gamepad with this game on a PC just fine.

Well, I downloaded an app that was supposed to let you use the 360 controller on a PC, but I could never get the thing to run. Not quite sure what I did wrong.

The 360 controller was designed by MS to run on PCs as a plug-and-play USB controller.  Did you try this with a wireless one or a wired one?  MS uses a special wireless tech for the 360 that I don't think works on PCs.  Try using a wired controller and it should just plug in and work.

I'm pretty sure they have a dongle you can buy to make your wireless work with a PC.  I can't say that 100%, but I was in the market for one and just never got around to getting it.
