Looking for book suggestions for basic photography course (please)

Hello all, last fall I taught our new photography course at the university where I work and I have am planning a lot of changes to improve the course.  One of those changes is the selection of a new text to use in the course.  Despite spending a lot of time selecting the book I used last fall, I ended up not liking it and the students felt the same way. I’m hoping you can help me by providing some suggestions as to photography books that you’ve found helpful.  That way I can focus my search as I look for a book to use this fall.  Of course, they want my book order by March 11th.

Definitely Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. If you are covering flash exposure then Neil Van Niekirk's book for on camera flash.

Here's some very good books. But, there's three of them to the set:

I'm taking his online training.........

I will second this recommendation.

Peterson's Learning to See Creatively is also worth a look, although The Joy of Photography covers a lot of the same things.

Hardly a comprehensive school text but wonderfully well written.

Thanks for the responses.  Peterson's Understanding Exposure looks like it might be good, but the local libraries do not have it.  I'm going to check local bookstores for it.  I'd like to look at it in some detail.  Those Kelby's books are popular, but they lack structure and would be difficult to use in a class setting.

BTW, I ended up going with the Peterson book.  We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.
