Editor or Reply Box problem? Please let us know!

Thread Starter

If you are having a problem with the editor or reply box please let us know.  We need to know:

  • Computer OS
  • Browser name and version
  • Brief description of the problem
  • Can it be duplicated consistently or is it intermittent?
  • Is it the WYSIWYG or the basic editor?
  • Anything else you can think of that might help

Please keep this thread confined to the editor only.  Thanks

Yes. Return does move line down for paragraph.

Win7 x64, firefox 4.0 b11. Also occurs in opera.

OMG, new annoying thing.. so far just Chrome and FF 4.0b11... if you ever click away, it puts your cursor back at the very beginning EVERY time again.  I mean if you click away from this page and come back, bammo!  Your cursor goes straight to the top!

Computer OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Browser name and version: Firefox 4 beta 12
Brief description of the problem: Multiple; the shortcut key commands highlight the correct buttons but do actually format the text in WYSIWYG mode. Sometimes hitting enter creates a new line, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I can't type anything in WYSIWYG mode at all. I do 99 percent of my posting right now in Source mode, using HTML.
Can it be duplicated consistently or is it intermittent: Intermittent but frequent.
Is it the WYSIWYG or the basic editor: WYSIWYG editor. The "Source" mode works fine, and is where I do most of my editing.

I switch to source all the time too.  I'm finding I get to put < p > breaks all on my own.      But what I have also found out this: If I click away from the browser or the WYSIWYG window, it goes back to the very beginning, and I'll be damned, I can't get it to the end. Pressing "END" doesn't go to the end of the paragraph, etc.

I can make my own next paragraph if I have already quoted something, etc.

In a strange twist, I see in some places in the forum, it gives me the basic editor (which allows me to return, but has none of the cool add a video etc.) and in other areas - like here, it gives me the WYSIWYG.  Strange.

Yup.  I noticed the same thing earlier tonight, Matt...and reported it to the powers that be.

And I can't figure out any rhyme or reason to it.

Not related, but why no more Mark Forums Read at the top?

Thanks, Greg.  I'll pass that along, too.

The "Subscriptions" links at the bottom of the HTF pages is now also gone.

Just had this problem a couple of times this evening, sorry if it's what others are already reporting:

I also go right to the Reply window to post.  After submitting a post, I clicked on "Edit" to fix something in the response I'd just left, and got HTML instead of -- I guess it's the WYSIWYG editor that I'm normally in.

Drat.  Tried it just now on this one, and it worked normally.

Charles:

I think it depends upon which edit box-style you end up in.

I used one tonight in which all modified text in the box used html rather than just showing up WYSIWYG.

Yeah, I've been intermittently getting the "basic" editor (w/ a line saying the site thinks I'm using a mobile browser) when I try to edit my posts in the past couple days, especially last night when it happened a lot.  Basically, it's just treating the HTML-like text as plain text rather than render it in WYSIWYG format -- and loses some of the WYSIWYG features.

Quoting also doesn't seem to work as well as it used to -- for a long while, it managed to keep nested quotes intact, but now, it seems to be back to the old behavior of losing the nesting.

This happens on my work laptop running Win XP SP3 w/ IE7.

Haven't tried it w/ other machines+software combos that I also use...

You mean you're the one-and-only HTFer who uses that dangerously overkill button function? tongue.gif smiley_wink.gif

Hopefully, that means we'll be getting a Mark Current (Sub)Forum Read button in its place, where appropriate, soon... biggrin.gif

For sure. I open all the forums with new posts to their own tabs and mark the forums read. Works fine from the main forum list. Hitting it from a subforum usually marks the stuff I'm wanting to look at as read.

I am now getting a new strange bug.  When I quote, it seems to put me at the bottom (Hurray!) but the quote above appears like a quote inside a quote, or sometimes just an empty quote box and I have to go back and cut and paste it in

But that would mark *all* forums read though, not just that subforum.  That's the problem w/ having that instead of a "mark current (sub)forum read" function w/in each (sub)forum instead.

In those parts of the site where you're definitely looking all posts across all forums, I could see the point of a "mark all forums read" function, but it doesn't make much sense to have that inside a specific (sub)forum since you won't know what else you're marking outside that (sub)forum.  For instance, it probably makes some sense to have that for the Recent Activity Feed on the Home page (and My Subscriptions page), especially since you can choose to see all there before deciding to mark them all read.

That mark all forums function probably isn't all that necessary anyway as things get marked as you read them (and you can always force a mark on the most recently updated thread by doing just that in whichever see all view you prefer), and when you return later, it's easy enough to tell where you left off.  Meanwhile, maybe you might later decide you'd like to know what you didn't actually read earlier, but can't easily do that once you mark everything as read.

OR am I missing something else about the usefulness of that function?

Only time I ever found it useful at all was when I seriously didn't want to see any older posts left as unread -- and that only happened back in the early days of this new software due to the transition logistics.

I've done it for ten years here. If I don't and I don't read threads I don't care about, it continues to show as new posts for a while. When I open all the subforums onto their own tabs and then hit the Mark, it does not mark them read on the tabs. It marks them read on the main forum page and if I reload. It works for me, can be avoided by those for whom it does not, and I will be seriously pissed off if it is removed or changed. I've accepted the changes around here with little complaint, but not that. Right now, it's at the bottom still, so I can live with it.

Win XP, Firefox 3.6.15

Whenever I 'Ctrl-V' text into the reply box, I get this message:

htf error.jpg

The paste will go through after I 'OK', but I'd love to get rid of the error.

Just tested it now, and it's working for me.  I have complained loudly and often about the inability to right click and paste responses here due to the stupid Huddler software philosophy that this is somehow dangerous.  If they take away the Control-V work around I will rage.

I don't know if this one has already been reported, so apologies in advance if it's a duplication.  It involves typing two or more paragraphs, and then deciding to join them into one.

Using this and the previous sentence as an example:  If I place my cursor at the beginning of it, i.e. before Using, and backspace twice, then no problem.  However, if I place the cursor after one. above, and use the DELETE key to join the two, the first press moves the lower paragraph up one line, but the next press starts deleting the word Using.  What DELETE is doing at the end of a paragraph is dropping the cursor down to the start of the next line -- whereas, in "normal" word processing software, I would be pressing DELETE twice to get the two sentences joined, then I can put in however many spaces I want between them.  This kind of unexpected behavior is always jarring.

This little thing was pretty cumbersome to describe.  Let me know if it doesn't make sense.

We held off on updating our editor for a few versions due to a major bug that got fixed in the latest version so we loaded it.  For the bugs reported prior to this week can you re-test and tell me if they are still valid?

Thanks!

Quote problems still exist.

* Can't break quotes in half.

* Oftentimes, deleting text from the end of the quote, makes it impossible to type outside the quote box, below it.

* Not sure if I still see quoting weirdness, where empty boxes are created (not happening right now. maybe that's an iOS thing.)

Recurring glitches where there's no cursor or positioning ability in the edit box.

Sometimes the edit box fails to load fully.

Sometimes I click in the edit box, and then the page scrolls me back to the top of the page, and I have to manually scroll back down to where I was to work on the reply.

Just had this happen to me.  Had to clear the reply box and start all over.

FWIW, I cannot enter to move to a new line, go back and edit an existing word, and I can't even see where I'm at in the box.  Windows XP.  FF 4.0 (official release). Similar issues with Chrome 11 (DEV).

This is an intermittent trouble for me and it just happened.

I use Latest Safari, FF 4.0 and Rockmelt.

I also get a please wait window that never goes away and sometimes the post never gets

posted but also it does get through but rarely, that is with the long please wait.

Changing from Rich Text to BB Code seems to have fixed my issue on FF 4.0.

I didn't know we had that option (did we always have it?). I prefer BB Code to Rich Text anyway so I'm a happy camper again. biggrin.gif

Capture.JPGWe rolled it a choice between BB Code and CKEditor about six months ago.  To those who don't know about it you can turn it on by going to the My Profile tab and click on the Edit Account Details button.  Scroll down the page and look for the drop box.  Select BB Code and you are good to go.

I stubled onto the cursor issue the other day and filed a ticket.  I haven't has a long please wait in a long time. When was the last time you did?  Can you clear your cache and let me know if it still happens?

I just had the please wait pop up using the iPhone.
It just doesn't go away.
I had to skip the attempt and use taptalk to get the post to go through.
