It's not a secret at this point, at least not here at HTF.  But generally Gord & Dave only report when the studios give them press releases.  Not every time, but most of the time.  And since this release isn't coming until October and CBS/P doesn't generally give advance release news until about 3 months beforehand, I'd say we are just too far out yet for TVShowsonDVD.com to announce anything just yet.  But it shouldn't be much longer before they give us an official announcement.

Gary, I'll accept this as GREAT NEWS, even if TSOD is not yet ready to!

Does the same apply to Gunsmoke?

Yes it does, Joe!  Both shows are still alive and kicking on the release schedule for CBS/Paramount.

Gary "and Bonanza S2 will get off the snide as well - not that I'm personally interested in that one" O.

That's great news about Bonanza too!  I just ordered S1 (never figuring to get very far with it) but the balance of S2 will be welcome.

Joe:

Didn't know you were a Perry Mason collector.  Great!  Nice to see your name again.

Thanks Gary O.

Do you believe that it will take CBS a year to release Perry Mason season 6, volume 2 or only about 6 months? And when do you believe that they will release the Perry Mason movies? I had thought that they would release the first set somewhere between 2015 and 2016, as long as there were no delays.

Score another one for the crystal ball!

Nice color shot of 4 of the 5 main cast members on the front.  I have a 16x20 B&W poster of all 5 taken from the same photo shoot framed in my office.  It's nice to see what color clothes they were actually wearing and how they actually would have looked had we seen them in person.  Ray Collins and William Hopper have dueling white haired ness going on although Hopper still had some grey.

Thanks Steve. FINALLY some good news, but what a dang long wait!frown.gif

The CBS Syndication Bible was updated this week and the PM page was updated to indicate that S6 has been transfered to HD which means the upcoming DVD release should have the same stellar look as the others. thumbsup.gif

I've seen some PM on the ME-TV network and they're using 16mm prints for some of their airings.    It begs the question if CBS/P is making these transferred series (not just PM but any of them) available to syndicators?

Incidentally the other updates were to confirm that the entire run of Hawaii Five-0 is now in HD as are the first seven seasons of Love Boat (something of a shocker).  There was an update to the Petticoat Junction page but it was just to identify which seasons were B&W vs color.

It's most likely that CBS/P supplied them with older off-the-shelf Viacom era syndication prints (which might have been transfered from 16mm at the time), and not the new transfers. Heck, Scifi Channel still uses TWILIGHT ZONEs from the edited Vicaom era prints - logos and all!

Steve, Encore Westerns shows an unpredictable mix of Have Gun, Will Travel episodes. Some are remastered and feature the current CBS/Paramount logo, and some are old Viacom prints. This puzzling variation in source material often changes night to night, so it's not as though they are using a whole season's worth of old prints, followed by S4-5 remasters.

Anything on that crystal ball of yours about Season 7? Still loving the series and wanting to collect it, though the series shows wear and tear by this time. I would say seasons 1 - 4 are the pinnacle of this great show.

The larger issue, I think, is that the production of physical DVDs may cease before many of these series have their final seasons released. This is likely because of, among other things, the years-long schedule in releasing the entire series when they only do a season (or half season) every six months to a year drags out the release of the entire series way too long--longer, perhaps, than the life of the delivery system . Wtih the demise of the physical CD not too far off, DVDs are not long for this world either.

Except, people still buy DVDs.
What is up with this rash of DVD is dead stuff. Hey, i buy more Blu-rays than DVDs. But i have no problem buying a TV show i want, on DVD!

Now DVDr...that is another story!

All the other points i agree. It has taken as long to release this show on DVD, as it ran on the air!

Still the DVD's keep coming. We've made it all the way through Season 6 with three more seasons to go. I am in the midst of watching the third disc from Season 6, Volume 2. I enjoy these Perry Mason sets very much. I do wish they would not break up the seasons, but we've six years so hopefully they will all be out by 2014.

It's just my opinion, but I foresee the demise of the physical DVD as at most 5 to 10 years away. And by that I mean the demise of all physical media as a mode of delivering content.
While disc-based media is certainly diminishing, I believe it will be around in some form for many years to come. It's been too pervasive, for too long, to shrivel and die so quickly. Add to that, many dinosaurs, like me, insist on having their material, if not primarily on disc, at least backed up on disc.

Not until everyone has the broadband capacity to stream those massive files. DC might, but lots of us won't for a L-O-N-G time, if ever. Until we do, don't look for the studios to write off that big an audience.
I question whether streaming or downloading will ever be practical. You have ISPs raising prices for people who download large amounts of data. It's just going to be too expensive to download movies.
I think it is practical right now, in certain situations. But it is hardly universal, so your point is taken. But whereas I used to have to mail a DVD to someone so they could see my new video, now that practice is considered wasteful (postage, disc, and time taken to insert the disc in a player). While You Tube and its ilk are sufficient, I sometimes cringe at what the download quality, even at alleged 1080i, does to my video. But no one seems to really care. If they can get their content quick and easy, without fumbling with a disc, so much the better.

I'll take physical ownership and best quality.

You can pry my media disc from my cold, dead hand.

Thrilled by all the CBS release news lately, and looking forward to more. Does anyone know why certain shows on the half-season release schedule have moved to releasing both half seasons at once, whereas others (like Perry Mason and Gunsmoke) are still releasing them at separate times? Does it have something to do with which series are still being sold in stores?

Well, I couldn't disagree more. Perhaps all books, magazines and newspapers will also be extinct in 5 to 10 years, as well. Nothing is less romantic to me than a room full of hard drives containing all my music and movies, no artwork and no liner notes. I know that it is "new' and "modern" to "foresee" this demise, but it just doesn't add up. I'm not THAT OLD and neither are the many who regularly buy physical media. Plus, similar doomsday prophets who claimed that CDs and DVDs would degrade into dust in 15 years have been proven wrong. I was given a demo CD in Brazil in 1983 by a friend who was a record producer at Som Livre recently back from Japan. I had it out again last week and, guess what, it still plays perfectly and just like new. What if CDs and DVDs last over 100 years? Will that sacred little hard drive last that long? We, as a culture, may be forced toward a totalitarian robotic digital download future. But, there will be, and, in fact, already is a backlash. And, when another sophisticated worm like the one that is presently causing havoc in the Middle East enters your computer and hard drives, wiping out your entire media collection, I'll be at home with my solar panels and Oppo enjoying RUGGLES OF REDGAP.
