Like all the cool visual things being posted, just thought I'd lighten things up a bit with this...

It's from the 2012 Muppet Movie Parody poster calendar. You should see the one for Sound of Music. I won't hijack this thread to post it here, but maybe on the Muppets thread.

Hilarious! Steve Tannehill (#84) needn't have worried about hijacking the thread with his reference to 'TITANIC'. The 'Lawrence' ads posted by Stephen PI (#89) have the word boldly capped in almost all of them.............smile.gif

My screen is 3.5m wide. On it I clearly see the limitations of Blu Ray, first the colour subsampling, then the limited spatial resolution of 1080p/2K in general. The latter is apparent when pin sharp images always show a degree of aliasing (in highlights etc.), or the images are not pin sharp. There is no pin sharp and aliasing free in 2K. An optimal 2K image can look mightily impressive nonetheless:

Unfortunately it can't be put on Blu Ray in this resolution. The upcoming 4K Blu Ray standard can handle this, though, even if it still has colour subsampling. LOA in 4K will show the limits of the original photography before the limits of 4K itself.

How much of the finished digital restoration do you think will be first generation material? And do you know if anything is done about the missing frames between some cuts?
Will they be interpolated?

The majority.  Doubtful, as what we have was approved by DL, and any manipulation via added frames would then affect the track.

Now bring on the blu-ray!

That's where I saw it, too. One of the best movie going experiences ever. The film itself, the resolution, the lobby decor and display memorabilia to look at during intermission = awesome! Saw Vertigo restoration in 70mm in Westwood, I think. That was a great viewing, as well.

RAH - Speaking of Vertigo...do you know why Universal still hasn't released this on blu-ray? Would they need to do much more work on this film like restoration, cleaning and scanning as with LOA? I know they have been restoring The Birds for blu-ray release later this year.

I saw LOA in Century City in 1989. I had never seen the film before and only herd great things about it. It ws a long drive to Century City from my house however it was wortth the drivce. It was by far the best movie going experience I have ever had. To this day nothing compares to it. I will be glad to see this get a blu-ray release.

Plitt Century Plaza.  That was a great experience.

I saw it in 70mm at the North Point theatre in San Francisco. A HUGE screen and it was an amazing experience. (I also saw "Last Temptation" when it was released and the screen had been damaged by someone throwing food or paint at it.). Great, great theater that has passed on into San Francisco history.

Got to see this same presentation in the same theater 23 years ago in January...it was an amazing experience. Earlier in the day I was at the same theater for a private pre-release showing of..."Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade", so I was already physically wiped out from seeing THAT movie!!! I was still able to maintain full attention during the RAH restoration showing that evening, however. One of the greatest movie experiences of my life and I'm able to thank Mr. Harris for making it possible on this thread!!!patriot.gifsmiley_jawdrop.gif

This may be old news to you already Robert, but thanks to Bill Hunt and The Digital Bits, there is a report of a release of LOA on bluray in Norway in mid June -- so that bluray disc release on the horizon may not be a mirage after all....

I saw this engagement also. Seeing that beautiful 70 MM film along with the six track Dolby SR soundtrack played through the theatre's Awesome HPS-4000 sound system is an experience I will never forget. Except for a live orchestra, Maurice Jarre's music never sounded better than when it played at this theatre.thumbsup.gif

Sony should be making an announcement very soon....I hope smile.gif

I'm wondering if Sony is cerebral enough to release the Blu-ray in early July (maybe July 6th?) to coincide with the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Aqaba...

I remember that presentation, too. It was the first time I went to the movies after moving to California. One of my very best movie going experiences.

Also in the article linked above...

"Also coming to Cannes for all rights licensing are restored versions of major Harold Lloyd films including Safety Last, Speedy, Girl Shy and many more features and shorts by "the third genius'. Agreements for France and UK have already been concluded."

!!!! Harold Lloyd possibly on Blu-ray someday? Please... make it so!

Cannes film festival starts today and no firm news about the release of LOA on Blu-Ray. We keep hoping to have something firm but nothing of substance in quite a while. Perhaps someone can shed some light on the release date. Even if we had been waiting for its release for Cannes or 50th anniversary, Sony would surely have announced by now.

If it's coming out in the fall (a likely time for a big catalog title), they probably wouldn't announce it until the summer.

I'm hoping it's released during the summer. It's become sort of summer tradition for me to watch the film when it's really hot.

This is really excellent art work. Hope US release is same.

I like that on Amazon.fr they are offering both the big box 'o stuff and a 2 disc blu-ray set.

Thanks for the post. Just posted it to my DavidLean.com website.

This looks to be worth the wait. But will it contain the restored balcony scene? Hmmmmmm?

It's also interesting to note that the site states it is from a 4K transfer not an 8K transfer that I've heard rumored.
