PHE Press Release: The Ten Commandments (Blu-ray) - Page 2

More awful Blu-ray cover "art".

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I'm going to get that gift set so I can whack people across the head with those replica tablets!  I hope they have some weight to them!

"THOU SHALL NOT STEAL!" *WHAP!*

Cover art is ugly.  the current generation of graphic artists are photo shopping retards.  It's kind of extra insulting when the "The Social Network" Blu gets that gorgeous embossed black case under the dopey card board sleeve to protect it.

Hmm, so it's normal for The Wizard of Oz to start off in black and white then? smile.gif

I've never seen any incarnation of the 1923 version of The 10 Commandments. Except excerpts on PBS. Maybe now that it's on blu ray, you have the option to seamlessly branch in the color portion?

Question: I see this has a "new" 75 min. doc. So this is different than the doc on the last release? And if so then I would have to keep my older one just to have the other doc. This release may make me buy a br player! Now all I need is a hi-def tv!

You're right. It IS more awful blu ray cover art.

Paramount seems to be trying to outdo the awul cover on
Warners new King of Kings Blu, but that is going to be a hard one to beat.

It's ironic that the quality of the discs inside keep getting better and better while the boxes that house them get worse and worse

Doubtful.  They've badly neglected it, and even make the mistake in the liner notes of saying it is "tinted footage" when really it's a combination of Technicolor Process 2 photography and Handschiegl process dye transfer.

And someone over at the Nitrateville board says the blu-ray does not rely upon the restored version with proper color tints, and instead uses and older, black and white copy.

Seem so according to Escapay on DVDizzy.com.  I will be holding on to the 2-disc Special Collector's Edition DVD when I upgrade, though I wish they had used the art for the BD release, and at least included the new documentary on a third disc.

Holy Cow! The DVD I have of The Ten Commandments is from 1999! The very first DVD of this film. It's enhanced for widescreen and I think it looks quite good still. I hadn't realized there was a 50th Anniversary edition out that included the silent version with the commentary that appears to be in this new blu ray edition.

As for the cover art on this new box, I can't blame the art department, the Marketing people have input too. I've never seen the original poster art for this film, I'll look that up. But the first DVD I though had a nice cover with Moses holding the tablets above his head. And the Red Sea parting behind him. Looks appropriate still.

Agreed.

I found a poster. Looks like the same art used on the first DVD, but the painting was altered for the DVD.

Behold His Mighty Hand.... reaching for his wallet. Actually I may wait and see if there's a UK Blu on the horizon before deciding.

Oh and I'm glad the original silent is available too, who's scoring it? Moroder?

Is it only the cover art that is making you wait for a UK release, Steve, or are you suspicious that regional encoding will make this unplayable in the UK?

Ken, it's not the cover art, though region coding is important. I just want to see if the UK edition is different in any way and than decide. No rush. :)

Thanks Steve.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Ugh.  I'll probably be passing on this to wait and see if there will be a more compact, space friendly version of the 3-disc BD down the road or from another region.

The book would be nice to have but I can do without the toy tablet, oversized box and the 3 DVD coaster set. biggrin.gif  I no longer have the shelf space to devote to this type of stuff and I certainly don't want to pay extra for it.

I ahve ordered the box set but fully agree with Jim_ K. It will be a bugger to store.

Nevertheless, it is great

(if sometimes unintentional) fun and I'm looking forward to it on BD.

Thanks to this thread the official press release has been updated/reissued by Paramount.

Maybe I should now upgrade from my laserdisc set - with it's side changes occurring in mid-conversations.

You'll get a far better looking picture too. I chucked my TC laserdisc years ago.

I also want to add that the ABC showing last year of the restored print featured better sound (you can hear the Voice of God much more clearly now) and fixed two musical passages that were incorrect on the dvd version. On a side note, I still have my copy of the 35th Anniversary vhs. The copy I have was limited to 1,000 copies and has a numbered plaque on the front of the case (real metal!) It also contains a certificate of authenticity signed by Charlton Heston.

Yeah, but that big red 35th anniversary box looks cool.

I wonder if I could just sell off the 3 laserdiscs only and keep the box to put the new BD in?

That's VERY wishful thinking.  Having the big impressive box is a MAJOR part of the deal for LD collectors.

The DVD looks AWFUL

It would be fun if you could actuallytell us which two musical passages were incorrect.

Joe, you brought them up years ago.....the first was when Bithia is holding the baby "He will be the glory of Egypt." On the dvd the music comes in later than it did previously. This was fixed. Also, the trumpets heralding the return of Moses from Ethiopia no longer sound out of tune.

I just bought this big box o' stuff at BB for $26 and change. It was on sale for $30 and I had a $5 coupon. The package is handsome, but as others have said the tablet case has to be the worst packaging ever. Will watch it later this evening.
