Advice/Recommendations for Home Theater System

Thread Starter

I am in the market for a home theater system and my price range is up to $500 - $600.

I plan on hooking up a Blue Ray player, HDTV, XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii, and HD Cable Box. Mainly used for TV and listening to music. The room is rectangular (25'x15') with the TV located in the corner.

Any thoughts or recommendations on something reasonable?

Here are a few I had been looking at. I received some Christmas Gift Cards to Amazon so had been looking at things I could buy there. It appears the only difference in the S5300 and the S6300 is that the S6300 does 1080p upscaling?

Onkyo HT-S5300 ($399 on Amazon)

Onkyo HT-S6300 ($529 on Amazon)

Klipsch 5.1 Home Theater System + Harman Kardon AVR1600 Receiver ($599 on Amazon)http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=br_lf_m_1000579581_grlink_4?ie=UTF8&plgroup=4&docId=1000579581

Because you have the Wii, I would suggest going with the Onkyo 6300 over the 5300.  The 6300 features analog-to-digital video upconversion, so you can connect the Wii using component video cables (it doesn't support HDMI) to the receiver, and still have only a single HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.

This won't improve performance at all, but it's a very nice convenience feature because it ensures you won't have to ever change inputs on the TV no matter which device you want to use.

The Klipsch speaker package is often recommended around here - it will provide better performance than any speakers included in an HTiB system, however, if you can, I would suggest you listen to some Klipsch speakers for a while beforehand.  They use a rather unique "horn" tweeter that produces a sound that some folks find bright and fatiguing after extended listening.

If you opt for the Klipsch speakers, you could also pair those with a receiver from Onkyo - the analog-to-digital upconversion feature is available starting with the 608 model.  I wasn't able to confirm if the HK1600 will upconvert analog to digital.

Good luck.
