The Apprentice season 10 thread

The Donald puts actual people out of work through a "job interview competition" in its 10th season, starting tonight on NBC in the 10 p.m. EDT timeslot.

My wife and I just started watching this show a few seasons ago...so we've only seen the celebrity versions of this game.

We are looking forward to seeing a non-celebrity season.

Oops, the first episode starts at 9 p.m. EDT for a 2-hour season premiere.

Move over, Omarosa...looks like you've got competition for biggest bitch in Apprentice history! If I were Trump, after about the fifth time Mahsa mentioned being a district attorney I would've said  "I'm judge, jury and executioner in this boardroom and your ass is fired".

I was really surprised, Brent, that Trump didn't shut her down and tell her off when she went off the way she did when the three women returned to the board room.  I know I would have enjoyed seeing him do it.

Ah, too bad some eye candy had to go in the first firing session.  There's a reason why that lady is an out-of-work DA.  She hasn't learned when to STFU.

What an all around horrible group of people. Some were worse than others but they were all annoying. I'm also finding it hard to feel sorry for these people. Some of them made more in a year than the average person makes in 2. The finical crisis has hurt everyone but I'm willing to bet most of them were living a pretty glamorous lifestyle and weren't smart about saving their money. I would much rather have seen Trump hire a more blue-collar worker. Maybe as the show goes on and we learn more about these people I'll feel differently but I doubt it.

Same here. And to echo what Patrick said, it's too bad to see the best piece of eye candy go in the first episode. You'd think Trump would've kept a former beauty contestant around a little longer.

Brent, did you hear Trump say at the end that he was going to set up an interview for Nicole at the Miss Universe pageant?  :)  FWIW, I suspect that her looks may have had something to do with how harshly the other women turned on her.  Maybe.  As for Mahsa, I knew right away that there was no way she would get fired early -- that kind of conflict makes for good TV!  :)

I had no idea this was going to be on until the day it aired.  I was very happy to see it go back to the basics that made its first few seasons so good.

Enjoyed the ice cream episode! I get a kick out of the fact that torwards the end the women were giving away free ice cream just to keep the men from getting any more sales.

I was wondering if that tactic was tallied into their profit-margin at the conclusion of the challenge.

My guess was that since the product was somewhat perishable, only the totals counted.

Bear in mind that we only see part of the boardroom meetings -- I'm sure the subject came up.  It probably just didn't get heated enough to air.  smile.gif

Was that the most obvious elimination in the history of reality competition shows?  smile.gif

I thought Dave deserved to go before the guy they ended up kicking off. Dave can't work with a team, he's very rude and has a huge inflated ego and serious anger problems. This weeks PM tried to be professional and took him away from the rest of the group to talk things over but Dave just told him to shut up. Very rude. He's been a problem on every task so far hasn't he? Judging by the previews for the next episode he will be again. Hopefully he gets the boot soon. I can't stand people who treat others like garbage.

Yup, he seems to be a complete lunatic. I'm surprised Trump hasn't made a bigger issue out of that yet, but then again the crazy ones always make better TV so Dave will probably be around a little while longer. No chance in hell he would ever win the whole thing, though.

+1  James might not be an extremely talented businessman (who do you expect when you cast a lawyer on the show?) but David succeeding in making him look bad--which is unfortunate for him.

In the meantime...another lawyer on the show runs into some problems of her own...

And an update.

They'll keep Dave and Mahsa around as long as possible for TV purposes.  Can you blame them?  smile.gif

Also, keep in mind that we don't see everything, and it seemed like every guy on the team hated James.  It had to be more than just not getting along with Dave.

As for Mahsa resigning from her job. . .aren't these shows taped well in advance?  Does this mean she's got other things lined up (either with Trump or elsewhere) already?

I started watching the show back during the Celebrity days and I was hoping it would be a bit more fair when it got back to normal people and reward the people who deserve it and punish those who don't but I guess that's not going to happen.

Someone on another board brought up a good point about Dave calling in his unemployment details. He's being payed to be on the show and I'm sure he's getting thousands of dollars to be there and that's probably increasing the longer he lasts so should he really be filing for unemployment when he's getting paid to be on the show?

I've been watching since the beginning, and that is definitely not how this show works. Be loud, obnoxious, have fits of selected amnesia and you will go far on The Apprentice.

Are we sure about this?

The producers specifically showed a scene in which David called his home state's unemployment office to give them the information needed to extend his receipt of unemployment benefits.  He made no bones about it and used the moment to reinforce how difficult his life was without steady work.

In fact, it was one of those times when he seemed bi-polar and he grabbed his team's cell phone (during the first week's challenge when Gene was the PM) and took it outside to make a personal call.  THAT was the call he made.

That's too bad. I've seen a few episodes of the UK series and it seemed much more fair and it was a lot more enjoyable too. No long, drawn out boardroom full of name calling and deceptive editing to make the contestants look stupid.

No, but I know the contestants on Dancing With The Stars get paid and shows like Survivor and The Apprentice are shot over the course of a couple months aren't they? That's quite a long time to go without a paycheque, especially if you're unemployed and have rent and child support to pay. I doubt they're getting $100,000 per episode but I could could see them getting $5,000 -$10,000 or something like that.

Mike, I saw the scene where Dave called in to the unemployment office.  I just didn't think the contestants got paid to be on the show.

Come to think of it, I know someone who was on the show in the 2nd or 3rd season.  I should email him and ask. . .

Come to think of it, I have Google!  smile.gif

How do people take time off to do the show, and how much are they paid?
How does one take six weeks off from a successful career to go on a reality show ? Derek says the answer is simple: “If you say no, there are 10,000 people behind you.” Those six weeks off have a price: “I basically gave up six weeks of pay. For a lot of people on the show, that’s a lot of money,” Derek said. But it was worth it, he said, because it was “the most fun and exciting thing I’ve ever done.”

Once selected, candidates can’t just tell the world that they’re going on the show. But some people do know. Derek says his “immediate boss knew,” and “because I got recruited, people put two and two together.” But other candidates made up cover stories, saying they were going to visit sick relatives, for example.

So are those who don’t win compensated? The candidates “have not [yet] been paid,” Derek said. “What we have heard from previous cast members is that ... [pay] is based on how long you last on the program.” That’s also true of other competition reality shows

The candidates also don’t even get in-kind compensation. “We don’t get any free stuff on the show; we don’t get free clothing,” he said.

So it sounds like they'll get paid something, but don't know how much or when.  If it's a small enough percentage of Dave's previous salary, it might not disqualify him from collecting benefits.  It probably depends on the law in his state.

Interesting read Aaron. Thanks for posting that. I suppose NBC's army of lawyers would have looked into this already so I guess everything will be on the up and up but I kind of hope Dave gets sent to prison for fraud or whatever. It would make a great spin-off series. I'd love to see him mouth off to some big, burly con and get the shit kicked out of him.

"Mr. Don Junior?!?!?!"

I thought the woman who went home tonight--Tyana--really got railroaded.

Unless I really missed something, which is always very possible, I'd say Mahsa really escaped a fate of her own making by completely taking over total control of that project and losing.

You just have to realize that the Donald mainly keeps trainwrecks and loud people in the early 1/3 of the season just to stir out viewer interest, but this season's ratings are in the tank.

I am pretty disinterested in the premise that the economy has tanked and it has impacted a lot of people and that somehow this TV show and Trump's hiring of an "apprentice" is somehow going to "do something."  Lame.

And how does Mahsa fit in, exactly?  The woman had a perfectly good job--which she risked by appearing on the show!  Her small clip last night in which she expressed concern that she feared she might be downsized was rather specious.

As I said early on, I am new to this show save for the last several seasons of "celebrity" ventures.  Having never seen a "regular" version of The Apprentice, I am unimpressed with this season.

I have noticed a trend this season with Survivor, Hell's Kitchen and The Apprentice that the casting has really taken a turn.  There are few reasonable, good people to be rooting for in these programs.  It seems the producers have made a conscious decision to cast as big a group of dysfunctional, loud sociopaths as possible.  All for the sake of ratings, I guess.

Which explains why the ratings are in the tank, it's a rather uninteresting or unlikable cast of characters this season.  I have no one to root for, and pretty much only people to root against and see them get fired, which isn't all that productive use of my time this go-around.

I, too, am becoming more selective in where I am spending my limited television watching time.     There's been a lot of disappointment this season.
