Not sure if this is going to be on BBC America ever (or maybe just very delayed, like Ashes to Ashes), but I highly recommend importing the DVD/Blu-ray of this if you like the character of Sherlock Holmes at all.

Despite being a modern reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes (and the boyish-looking actor they chose for the title role), the miniseries is much more true to the character than the travesty of a Guy Ritchie film.

Anyway, it's 3 90-minute episodes (with a second season confirmed for next fall), and each one was excellent, in my opinion.

Edit: It turns out that it's going to be released in Region 1 / A on Nov 9 according to Amazon.

I fully enjoyed the first three and was quite disappointed when the next week rolled around and it was not on. :(

Glad they are coming out with more!

FYI, this will be airing in the US on PBS starting Sunday October 24, I highly recommend it.

I watched the first episode of Sherlock and it was fabulous. This is one of the best updates of a classic story I've ever seen.

The problem is -- the Masterpiece Mystery broadcasts have been CUT! Go here for a discussion of the cuts:

The question is: is the Blu-ray/DVD release of Sherlock's first season, scheduled for release in the U.S. on November 10, going to have the edited Masterpiece Mystery versions or will we get the complete and unedited episodes?

I'm hoping that since the Blu-ray/DVD is from the BBC that we're getting the complete episodes, but I am a little worried.

Tonight the first film of the second run aired on BBC One. It quickly dispatches with the cliffhanger from the last film before diving into its own unique take on "A Scandal in Bohemia". It was my favorite since the first. All our favorite existing characters are on hand, and into the mixed is introduced Irene Adler, in a take fully worthy of this Sherlock Holmes. Like the short story, it would seem to revolve around compromising photos involving Ms. Adler and certain royalty. But the arc of the short story is dispatched within the first third of the running time, before diving into something much deeper and richer. I saw the ultimate ending coming, but I admired the elegance of it. The best mysteries should be solvable.

Very much looking forward to the continuation of this series. The first three were all marvelous. Keep us posted as you watch them. Are there only going to be three episodes in the second series?

I'm glad for this to be back, but I was a little disappointed. The cliffhanger ended way too abruptly, for one. I also thought the first half of it wasn't all that great. They did a few things which were too 'cute' near the beginning, like that wink to the fans with the hats. And I know it aired right after the holidays, but the Christmas stuff seemed entirely out of place and too sentimental for Holmes. That being said, the second half or so was much better. It seems so far that they're taking a tiny bit more leeway with the character than the previous three, which is fine, but like I said, the plot of this one just didn't really catch my interest until the end. I'm excited for what the next one is based on though- it'll be an adaptation of
Hound of the Baskervilles.

Yes, just 3 again. I would love to see more than 3 episodes, every 2 years!

Much like last go-round, I didn't like the second film nearly as much as the first. There was a strong science fiction element to "The Hounds of Baskerville" that felt really out of place. I get that they were trying to modernize the story while maintaining the gothic horror feel, but it just didn't work for me. The solution was scarely more believable for me than the illusion.

The third movie is "The Reichenbach Fall", presumably based on "The Final Problem." A bit surprising, as I didn't think they'd want to (SPOILER) dispatch Moriarty so quickly (END SPOILER). Perhaps they'll take a different route.

Thanks. Look forward to your comments on it next week.

It's hard for me to look at last night's objectively, since the Hound of the Baskervilles is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes books. With that in mind, I have to say they completely and totally butchered it. That being said, looking at it on its own, I guess it probably wasn't that bad.

I don't think "The Hounds of Baskerville" was suppose to be based on "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (still reading the book). Granted the TV show borrowed many elements from the book, but it was its own separate story. And a very decent one at that. I loved it!

It was their "take" on the story. The show doesn't adapt any of the ACD stories directly, but so far every movie has been based at least in the broadest of strokes on one.

Yeah, I understand that it's not going to be directly pulled from the original stories, but at the same time, they could have kept this truer to the text for this one and still have had an entertaining story. Instead, what they ended up with was just entirely out of left field. It was decent, but I think something more accurate might have been better.

I'm almost done reading the book, and I'm glad the TV show didn't reproduce the original story! Most of the book was the set-up, and the last chapter was a monumental dump on how the mystery was solved, with much of the content never used in the rest of the book! All that material, and it was never properly used! I'm not even sure I'll ever finish the book now! A note to the producers. Keep doing what you're doing now. It works!

I was down on both of the other episodes of this season- neither comes close to being as good as any from last year, in my opinion. However, the third and final episode this year was great. I'd probably put it as the best of all 6.

I would rank them as follows: 1) 2x03. The Reichenbach Fall 2) 1x01. A Study in Pink 3) 2x01. A Scandal in Belgravia 4) 1x03. The Great Game 5) 1x02. The Blind Banker 6) 2x02. The Hounds of Baskerville Indeed a great finale. I hope 3x01 explains how the hell he did it.
