The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, Circuit City is still out of business...even in Hawaii (where they NEVER guaranteed their prices anyway).

Thanks as always, guys! I'll pick up The Third Man if the reviews are good when the price comes down. Otherwise, nothing for me this week.

Reviews are not looking good for this BD release of The Third Man -- I was hoping also since I missed out on the Criterion BD.

I'll be picking up The Twilight Zone: Season One Blu-ray and I'll get the Seven Blu-ray when it goes on sale at some point.

Thanks for the prices, guys!

Thanks as always Mike & Patrick.

I need to pick-up Glee: Season 1 Volume 2 and I'm thinking that my daughters will be pushing for Letters to Juliet. The Blu-ray version of LtJ is interesting: 1-disc Combo with both versions (DVD + Blu-ray) on one disc. I never really liked double sided discs (i.e. DVD's with the WS version on one side and the P&S version on the other side). It frequently confused me: does the inner printed ring that says "Widescreen" face up in the player, or does it mean that that is the widescreen side and should face down in the player? I definitely like artwork on one side of my discs.

I can't recall a recent title that has done this (Blu & DVD) on a single disc. I'm not sure that I have one in my collection. Anyone know of other titles that have done this?

Back to the WRU: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time will be a rental for me. My local Redboxes have started stocking Blu-rays for $1.50 per night.

Thanks for the Roundup.  Just The Black Cauldron for me.   First dvd I've bought since I went BLU.   Unfortunately Disney isn't putting out a blu ray of it.

To be honest, nothing's shouting at me to get NOW.  There are a couple things on my Price Watch list like Seven, The Twilight Zone, Big Bang Theory...but nothing I need to get rid now.  I'd even except The Commish Season 2 to price drop quickly.  I picked up the first season at BB for $9.99 earlier this year.

Thanks gents!

Wow, Best Buy's advertised price for the Twilight Zone BD sure does suck. Looks like I'll go the Amazon route...

I'm interested in some other TV on DVD titles, but I my hold off and wait for better prices that are sure to come as we get closer to the holidays.

Definitely picking up Glee at some point....I'm wondering if it will be a better deal getting close to the holidays, though.

Thanks Mike and Patrick!

First one that pops into mind, Jeff...are the Bourne films.

Interesting to me is that this MAY be the first time we are seeing a DVD, Blu-ray AND Combo Pack release of the same title (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time).  There definitely haven't been many of those.

I want to say Disney actually kicked off this trend sometime last year although I can't say as I've noticed any other studio doing the same with the exception of the occasional store exclusives that would feature a combo pack while the general retail release would just be a blu-ray only release.  Really not too happy about it personally as all I've seen it do is drive up the sale price of the combo pack.  From what I've seen of the prices, it appears that the blu-ray only version is now receiving the sale price that the combo packs used to get when they were the only option available.  But now with a blu-ray only option out there, the combo packs are costing 3-5 dollars more than they used to.

Exactly my concern.

My local Best Buy deleted one aisle of movies. They replaced it with a double-width aisle, in which there are a pair of standees or mini-racks on which "best sellers" are displayed. Looks like they reduced their inventory of BluRays by a bit less than one-third, and they reduced their inventory of DVDs by one-half.

Their A-Z section now fits on one side of one aisle. Which is good because I always saw people reaching the end of the aisle, and then they'd fall to their knees and scream upwards to the heavens  "WHERE DOES THE ALPHABET CONTINUE? WHAT COMES AFTER 'P'???!!!"

I haven't seen anything like that at my local BB, Will.  That's awful...and surprising (to me, anyway).  In my area the number of stores selling DVDs & BDs are becoming pretty scarce.

^ I love walking down aisles and looking at movies but for the stuff that I want, Amazon or occasionally Target beat out Best Buy so often that I barely even go to BB anymore. Looking at my Reward Zone account, in the last three months, I've only bought Shutter Island (which was on sale) and Lost: Season Six from BB. I can assure you that I've bought ALOT more than that at Amazon and even Target in the last three months.

I guess in the end, I don't really care that much because if BB doesn't want my money, I've got no problem going to Target or Amazon.

Fine.  I found myself in Best Buy after leaving work today.  They had a bunch of Warner BD Digibook's on sale for $19.99: 300, Willy Wonka, Matrix, Bonnie and Clyde, Falling Down and others.  Sales tags all said the price is good through October 2.

So I picked up 300, Star Trek (on sale) and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (on sale).  Apparently Iron Man BD is on sale too, but my store didn't have any on the shelf.

I'll be picking up Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time (picking up the Iron Pak version that Future Shop is peddling over here on my side of the border)) and Se7en this week......I will also pick up The Twilight Zone: Season 1 and Fringe: Season 2 at some point.....really tempted with TZ as it is one of my all time favorites but the price is just too damn high right now.

Matt's review to Glee: Complete Season 1 on Blu-ray has been linked-to in the OP.

Glee sounds interesting enough, and the 2nd season apparently begins a week from now.  If they released this BD set a month ago, I might be more inclined to get it right away to catch up before the 2nd season begins, but now is probably a tad too late to try that, especially w/ all the back-to-school busy-ness right now.  OTOH, I've never been all that big on closely following a TV series during their regular prime-time run on network TV, so it's probably no big deal waiting for a nice sale price and catching whatever I just happen to OTA...

Is it just me or does that Star Crash poster make it appear to rip off Return of the Jedi 4 years early?  :)

Man, FWIW I only flip on Glee occasionally and don't have much trouble following the continuing storylines.

If you're interested in Letters to Juliet, check your Sunday newspaper Parade Magazine section for a $5 off coupon valid on the purchase of the DVD or Blu-ray.

The coupon is really only useful on the DVD version: purchase Letters to Juliet at BB or Target for $12.99 (+ tax) after the coupon. Amazon's price on the Blu-ray negates any savings from the coupon, unless you can find a low 20's price at a B&M like Fry's or your local Wal-Mart.

Here's a scan of the ad / coupon:

Thanks guys!  Looks like just Big Bang Theory for me.

Not sure about FYE's pricing, but the new Entertainment Weekly (Fall TV Issue) has a coupon for 10% off any TV boxed set, including sale items.  Don't have the issue right here to check the expiration date...

Good info, Eric.  That issue has been sitting at home beckoning to me to pick it up.  I'll check it out.

Me too.  And I have a newfound interest in FYE due to their awesome new sample stations.  :)

Yes! Starcrash! I've been waiting for that one for-EVER! I cant wait to stop by Scarecrow on the way home and snap that sucker up.

My local Wal-Mart just cut their whole entertainment media section in half as well. There used to be two aisles of DVD/BR and a full aisle of music. Now there's only one aisle of movies (with a couple of random kiosks), and just one small two-sided kiosk with music.

I noticed there didn't seem to be any exclusion for used items, either. Though 10% off is a pittance anyway. I've stopped bothering with Best Buy coupons as 10% off isn't even worth the drive to the store. But FYE does have a few used box sets I was thinking about picking up.

Some local Wal-Mart information:

My local Wal-Mart had each of the individual LOTR movies for exactly $15 each.  The caveat I believe is that they are Wal-Mart exclusive editions which only contain the movies on Blu and DVD in a 2 disc combo pack.  This means that the extras disc is omitted for this version.

Also there is a Wal-Mart exclusive version of Se7en, for $20, which comes in a standard blu-ray case, and omits the 30-something page booklet, and booklet packaging (even though the sticker remains on the case touting the book.).  This may be of interest to some packaging OCD folks who hate how the book packaging stands higher than regular cases (of which I am one ).
