Just when you think pressed DVD is on its last legs...
What a welcome surprise.
Well, now, with this multi-studio set, and two-thirds consisting of previously-released titles, I guess the incentive to spend $150.00 street will ride on whether or not ON THE WATERFRONT, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, BABY DOLL, EAST OF EDEN, etc. have all been restored, and in the case of WATERFRONT, presented in OAR. I surely do want WILD RIVER and A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, and VIVA ZAPATA, but not if the expensive bulk of the set is exactly what I already own. And, even with the "Letter To Elia" doc, I think two discs are still unaccounted for -- what will those be? Guess we'll have to wait for the review copies to go out before we know, as there is no mention of restoration (or even remastering) in this press release.
Could the last 2 discs just be the bonus material discs from Warner's 2-disc SEs of Streetcar and East of Eden?
Watson - I think you have something there!
Unbelievable. They seriously expect us to buy all those films again just to get the 5 new U.S. releases? I already have the UK version of Wild River and the Australian version of Viva Zapata too. So they want $150 for effectively 3 new to DVD releases?
Why couldn't they just put the 5 new US DVDs in a box? For the people that have the 13 others already?
Having said all that. I would've gladly paid $150 for this set if it was all on Blu-ray.
Man, oh man! The Canadian dollar is virtually at par with the U.S. dollar so what gives in the price difference. Will we never be forgiven for Sid The Kid's overtime goal at the Vancouver Olympics?
Well, here's the first great deal. Unfortunately, it's at Wal-Mart.

Personally, I haven't bought anything at Wal-Mart for about 15 years, but I may have to waiver this one time unless another retailer can show a competitive price.
I wonder why this isn't showing up in more online stores. There is no sign of it on Amazon, Deep Discount, Movies Unlimited, DVD Pacific, DVD Planet, etc..., etc... The press release is more than a week old - what gives?
I no sooner post and suddenly it shows up on Amazon for $139.99, which I consider a pretty good price. By the time, I sell off my current versions, I should be around $100-$110 for this set. Amazon's listing also confirms that the extra discs are from the WB 2 disc sets. YEAH!!!!!!
I viewed the rebroadcast of "A Letter to Elia" this weekend and I was quite impressed with Scorsese's tribute to Kazan. Scorsese's love of film (and admiration of Kazan) is immediately apparent and invigorates every frame of the presentation. Watching the clips of films from Kazan that I've never had the opportunity to experience such as Wild River and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn are raising my anticipation for this set quite a bit. I already own a number of these films and I'm not anxious to repurchase them, but I may have to make an exception for this particular box set. Wild River in particular caught my eye with its raw natural settings and the pacing of the scenes with Remick and Clift.
- Walter.
Nope! ^_^ I watch the Dollar frequently, as I travel to the states a lot, and the cost differeence is staggering. I mean, I've bought stuff off Amazon.ca, and found it cheaper on Amazon.com even WITH shipping charges.
I don't know why Canadian retailers gouge us like they do... it's sad. But, I am hoping Costco will have the set... they have put many different DVD sets up for sale at substantial savings.
They have the Mel Brooks collection up right now for $40, and I paid $100! Same with the Paul newman Collection... it's at a reduced price, too.
I will but this set no matter what; I want America , America at any cost (I need it for my Best Pic Nominees collection, only need 33 more.)
Has anyone purchased this yet? I am curious as to how the discs were packaged, and if there were any extras (trailers?) not included in the press release.
I have received it and will be going through it shortly
Did you see the announcement that Warners is releasing this as a stand-alone pressed disc in Februray 2011?
Ok, the packaging is very similar to the Paul Newman Tribute collection, however, instead of two small books, they are housed in one elongated book-binder. While it has cardboard sleeves, it is very nicely handled. All Fox DVDs have a new disc art similar to the box design.
Extras of new films not in press release:

These (except for the WB-made America, America) have matching Elia Kazan Collection menu art. All other discs are the same as previous editions, outside of the Fox films having the Elia Kazan disc art change.
Does On The Waterfront have a new transfer in it's OAR or is it the same old disc?
Lou Lumenick posted another hint at singles
Same disc
No I didn't, John! Where was this announcement? Maybe I will wait...
thank you for this!
Thanks for posting those details JoHud; I am especially happy about the extras on A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN.
Amazon dropped their price from $149 to $137.49 yesterday, so I finally ordered and should have my set tomorrow. That was the price that I had set in my head all along as it will bring my net cost to less than $100 by the time I sell of my duplicates. That's a pretty good deal for the 5 new titles, documentary, & book.....plus I'll have all of my Kazan titles (Minus "The Arrangement") in one concise location!
November is killing me between this and the Criterion sale.
It's been a very slow year, but it's had a heck of a finish!!
John, you made a crappy day end on a high note! Thank you! ![]()
Can't wait for this dvd!
FYI: I ordered the Kazan set at Walmart.com for $119.86 - by far the best price I have found.
my boxset arrived from amazon today.... at first glance, very nice indeed. you get 2 books inside. the book holding the discs opens to info of each film on the left side page , and a sleeve insert on the right page to hold the corresponding film disc.
the kazan films from sony & warners carry those original graphics, while the new release discs are in red.
can't wait to dive into these films, may take me a month to finish this set!
I received my set today. Sadly all my discs are scuffed at the edges and / or scratched to varying degrees. Exactly the same thing happened when I ordered the Ford at Fox set a couple of years ago. Fox just seems incapable of presenting a big multi-disc set without stuffing up the packaging.
Fortunately the transfers are a different story. Wild River is a significant improvement over the Region 2 Optimum Entertainment version that has served me well. The Fox version is brighter and it now seems as though the Optimum version has a blue cast over the image: It is now obvious to see that the Optimum version is cropped a bit on the sides. I read today that Fox was initially going to release Wild River in early 2006, I assume as part of the Studio Classics line:
EDIT: Flipping back and forth between the images makes it seem that the Optimum version was horizontally stretched a bit.
Click the images below for bigger versions. The higher resolution (576 line) images are PAL; the lower resolution (480 line) are the NTSC versions from the Kazan box.
Here's some comparisons of the U.K. PAL version of Viva Zapata! With the NTSC version in the Kazan box. They look very similar to me, but the Kazan version is about a 1 GB larger file, so it may have a higher bitrate. The 576 high images are the PAL ones:
For completeness, here is a comparison of my Australian PAL version of On the Waterfront with the NTSC version included in the Kazan box. I really can't see much of a difference Again, the 576 pixel high versions are the PAL ones:
