RS-5 Strap: Single or Double?

Really intrigued by the RS-5 strap.

However, now I am wondering if I should go double.

http://www.blackrapid.com/product/camera-strap/double-strap/

I cover a few trade shows a year and it would be awfully convenient

to carry a camera on one hip and a video camcorder on the other.

By doing this, I could probably totally eliminate the need for a

backpack to carry both equipment.

Just have to find out if the dual RS-5 straps have the same

features (pockets for phone, etc.) on both ends as the single

RS-5.

Any thoughts on using this dual combination for the purposes

I mentioned above?

Thanks

Right off the bat, looking at the double strap, it

looks as if you lose the cool pockets to carry your

phone and digital cards.  Not good.

I wear a RS5 and a sun sniper crossed across my chest bandoleer style when doing NCAA football, works great.  I imagine the double is even better.  I never use the pockets.

Timely. Just picked up an RS-5 today. Eager to see how this is going to work. Definitely feels more natural picking my camera up off my right side, although I think the guy at the store may have adjusted a little too much slack in it. It's hanging well below my waist line. I also think the built in pouches are going to be too narrow to hold my iPhone, unfortunately. Maybe I would have been better off with the RS-4.

Michael,

Keep us up-to-date on how you are liking your RS-5.

I am tentatively ordering one in another week after

I have the opportunity to visit BHPhoto in NYC to

look at that and other things.

Ron, did you register for PhotoPlusExpo or no?  you are much better off waiting on all these purchases and getting them at the show.

Bags and straps especially.

I just completed the registration for the FREE badge

for the Expo Hall.

I happen to be off on Saturday October 30th so I will

make it to the show if anyone wants to go.

I need to buy the bag this week as I am going to Cedia

in two weeks.

Thanks for the tip on the show.  Glad to see it's FREE.

Just remember if you are planning on going that B&H (and Adorama too I think) keep Jewish holiday time, so you might want to make sure if you plan on stopping there on the way from the train that they are actually open the day you intend to go.  Thus they close at 2 on Friday and are off all day Saturday.

As you know I am moving to Maryland, but I intend to come back to NJ that week to attend PPE.  Very likely that I will be there on Friday, so if I go to B&H I have to remember to go before the show, not after.

My friends at the Renegade Photographers group will likely be doing a model shoot either thursday or friday night, will keep you posted on that.

Sam,

I need to decide between two bags immediately.

I am going next Sunday.  They open at 10am.

Thanks for the advice.

Okay, I'm pretty much sold on the RS-5 after a couple days of use. It's very comfortable. Maybe some people have had issues with their cameras swinging around, but I wonder if they have it adjusted properly. This model has two adjustable clips (the guy at the store referred to them as bumpers) that you position so the camera doesn't slide further back on the strap than you need. At one point over the weekend I was walking around the park, carrying around my nephew with my left arm and was able to easily grab the camera off my right hip and effortlessly shoot away single handed as long as I didn't need to adjust the zoom. In addition, my iPhone does indeed fit in the top phone pocket after all. I hadn't realized it expands as much as it does. The only downer (and this is a problem with my lens...not the strap) is that when my camera is pointed down and I have my 18-200 attached, the lens zooms all the way out to 200mm because of gravity. Zoom creep is a well known problem with that original 18-200mm lens and the second generation lens included a zoom lock switch to prevent just the sort of problem that I'm talking about. Anyhow, it's an inconvenience I'm willing to live with as I'll likely be buying more lenses down the road that won't be adversely affected by this. An added benefit is that by keeping the camera at my side, it frees up extra space in my camera bag to store an extra lens or two.

Awesome, glad to hear you are happy with it.  Love mine.

I don't doubt using one RS-5 should be perfectly fine -- much like using a regular camera strap would be.  But I believe the swinging issue probably has more to do w/ using the double-strap, which doesn't look like it'd keep the cameras as close to your body as simply wearing regular camera straps over opposite shoulders w/ them crisscrossing your chest/back.

Also, how much swing you experience probably depends on your body shape, etc. as well.  For instance, if you're slim, especially at the hips, gravity will probably influence that differently than if you're wider at the bottom or around the hips.  I suspect gravity helps you there for the most part, if you have bigger hips/bottom, especially w/ the way the double-strap works.  Obviously, it also depends on how you tend to move around, etc.  I move around quite a bit -- and am on the slimmer side (though not *very* slim) -- and I suspect I would indeed have a problem w/ gear swinging about if I use the double-strap.  OTOH, I also don't usually carry 2 cameras/etc. out in the open w/ regular straps crisscrossing over opposite shoulders -- just haven't found the need for that so far.

For you guys that complain about floppiness, here is your solution!

Bought a couple of these for use with my Manfrotto plates. I've been very happy with them so far.

By the way, that Sport Strap looks nice, but I'd prefer a strap mod for my existing RS-5 so I don't have to shell out another 70 bucks. There's a stabilizer strap mod for the RS-7. I wonder if it would work okay with the RS-5 as well.  EDIT: Never mind...I'm blind. It will work with the other RS straps as well.

Yup, I asked them about it, the stabilizer strap can be added to the 5s or 7s, but the Sport is a whole new beast.
