$200-250 sub?

Thread Starter

TO follow up a question I posted in the beginner forum,

I'm finishing up my first true HT

I've settled on:

Onkyo TX-SR608 for a receiver

Def Tech Prmonitor 800's for fronts

Def Tech Procenter 1000 for center

JAMO c400surr for rears

I was going to just do a 3.1 and upgrade to a 5.1, but I found the Jamo's for $60, which is cheap enough that I can do a 5.1 now, and in a year or two still feel good about moving the front's to the rears and getting new front

For a Sub, I'd like to spend around 200-250, and have setteled on a few suspects. I can't listen to any of them (no dealers in my area) so was wondering what the consensus was on these:

1) HSU-STF-1 for $250

2) Velodyne VX-10 or VX-11for $250

3) BIC America F12 for $20

4) Mirage Prestiege OM8 for $250

5) Def tech prosub 800 -- on ebay right now for $100, hoping to get for $250

6) "settle" for a $100 strop gap and get a "really good" sub in a year or two

My room is about 12x14. HT is used mainly for movie and tv watching. I don't care too much about "shaking the windows"; more interested in accuratre bass (maybe the two go hand in hand?).

thanks guys!

It is very hard to find "accurate" subs below $450.  IMO, any that you mention would go to the number 5 category.

From the ones you listed I would go for the HSU or the Velodyne.  Both will play down to about 35hz.

I still stand my my original recommendation in your original thread.  I had those speakers paired with a nice Velodyne for a couple years.

I love my Htsu - but if you live in the LA area, you don't have to take my word for it. They're in Cerritos, and if you call ahead they'll demo it for you (at least they did when I bought mine).

well dave, I hope you're happy -- i've inched my budget up once more!

i'm probably going to spring for a SVS or HSU sub (PB-10, STF2, or VTF1).

My new question -- and maybe etiquette says I should start a new thread, but I think I've started enough already -- is how are the SVS speakers?

I was set on the Def Tech Procinema 800 series (Pro Monitor 800's and Procenter 1000), but saw the SVS SBS-02 Booksshelfs and SCS-02 center are similarily priced. Now I am trying to compare between

-- deftech promonitor 800/1000

and

-- SVS SBS/SCS

for the fronts and center

as always, thanks in advance and pardon my incessant posting.

I'm assuming the Def Techs are available locally?  If so, I suggest ordering the SVS (or another internet direct brand) and comparing them.  If you end up liking the Def Techs better, you can send the SVS back.  It will cost your return shipping, but IMO it is worth it.  You get 30 days of in home demo time.

I have not heard the Def Techs so I cannot comment.  I do like the SVS bookshelf speakers.

Oh, BTW....   I love spending other people's money.
