The Event...is

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
aliens.

I'm calling it right now :)

Wouldn't shock me. Looks like an ambitious show though, and the NBC promotional campaign has been fantastic.

Definitely.  The promos sold me from minute one.  If they deliver on the promise, I expect a good HTF thread.

Who, what, when?  Mainly when.

Definitely on my 'To be watched' list.

The Event series premiere 9/20/2010

Needing a "Lost" fix?  Maybe "The Event" will fill that void (or not).  Premieres tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. EDT.

Awww, here I thought I started the season thread with my prediction: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/303475/the-event-season-1-new-nbc-show

As per Mo Ryan at AOL TV - here are -  10 Things To Know About the Event.

Totally nonspoilery and includes a Twitter id for the mysterious @TruthSeeker5314.

This mysterious person will be tweeting out tidbits of info as the show airs.

I already have the show scheduled to tape on my Tivo.

However, with me going out of town for a week it will

be that long until I have the chance to watch it.

...the show looks highly promising, though.

Since pilots aren't always the best showcase for where a series will go, I'm willing to give the show some slack (primarily because I dig a number of the actors on the show) but, so far, The Event is 24 with a twist of Lost, far fewer surprises and a huge number of commercials.

That was badass.

Yeah, they've got me at least until next week.

Although that was some sorry-ass Secret Service protection. Godzilla could have been rising up out of the water, they'd've had that door shut and that car moving. And even when everything was clear, the President would've been moved the hell out of there.

I had to suspend disbelief there as well, but they wanted to punctuate "the event". I'll give it to them.

Maybe their lack of movement was due to the event (or I'm assuming that the 'hole' that the plane went into was the event anyway).

According to interviews, the plane crash (or rather, the aborted plane crash) isn't "the event" proper -- apparently we won't know what it is exactly for at least a few more episodes. It's definitely tied into it somehow, it would seem.

A lot still needs to be established about past events (why exactly was the girl's family targeted, and how did the son-in-law know what was about to happen on the plane?). Next week, I imagine we'll be finding out more.

Still, I'm down for at least the short-term on this one, as long as it doesn't turn into another FlashForward.

I liked it.  It wasn't perfect, but had more than enough promise to be worth keeping an eye on.

I hope they abandon the Rashômon-esque device for future episodes. The pleasure gained from the reveals was far outweighed by the tedium of seeing the same scene over and over again. Otherwise, I liked it a lot. Interestingly, the subtitles use the same font as NBC's summer conspiracy mystery, Persons Unknown.

I doubt they will.  George R R Martin uses the device to great success in his Song of Ice and Fire series, and I can see it being of great use on The Event--the title cards might disappear, however (though I liked them).

My only concern is with the timeline, and how the scenes are jumping around.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's a very interesting story-telling device, but I can already see people complaining, to the detriment of the ratings.  Honestly, I've pretty much lost all faith in the TV-viewing audience--at least the ones who are tracked for ratings

I'm hooked, however.  Much better than Persons Unknown (wow, what a craptastic show that was...).

I'm out.  I know this may work for some, but the constant changing of time is one of those things that is just too tedious for me.  I realize people say "it's Lost-esque". ... go back and watch the Lost pilot, which did not have a ton of time flashes, and definitely not this jumble.  This just never at any point seemed cohesive at all.

*shrug*   Maybe I'll catch up at the end of the season if it catches on.

Yeah, the flashbacks on Lost were about 5 scenes of the entire episode and they were almost always in chronological order because they wanted to inform you about the character. This show seems more concerned with trying to be clever by tying one character's flashback into another's flashback. Like I said earlier, pilots are rarely the best episodes of a show so I'm willing to stick with this for a while longer especially since I've got nothing else to watch on Monday night this year.

I enjoyed it.  I'll be back next week.  I don't mind the jumping around, but it did seem like there were a few jumps that were unnecessarily done out of order.

Liked it...enough questions raised to see where it goes.  But I also got hooked on FlashForward, so we'll see what happens...

My only gripe is that they're using the exact same font as 24.

Kind of reminds me of ABC's late, lamented Traveler, with the unexplained conspiracy and mysteriously-destroyed life of a young white dude. It's interesting, but I really hope the writers know what "The Event" is, and who/what the prisoners actually are.

It would have been even stronger if the show had started with the disappearing girlfriend and plane. Then start diving into the backstory. Still, the way they handled the plane did surprise me, and bought enough of my goodwill to tune in next week.

And yeah, the first order of business for President Martinez (a Black Hispanic President...way to go for the trifecta, NBC) should be to fire those fools.

I first thought that "the event" was in the future and may be what was going to happen to the plane, but then as the episode progressed my impression is that The Event was whatever encounter occurred that all those people in the holding facility in Alaska (?) wouldn't talk about. That encounter appears to been with forces who could make that plane disappear.

As far as why the near fiance's family was targeted - it was to get the pilot father to attempt to assassinate the President and/or Sophia by plane.  Now, it could be that was also to force the hands of the forces to stop the plane as well or it could not have been directly related.

We don't yet have the information as to how the near son-in-law knew. It must have been someone with some pull so that the gun could be smuggled onto the plane.

Anyway, I'm intrigued by the pilot.  I'd like to go through the episode again, but I bet just seeing the timeline of events we've already seen laid out on some website (which apparently already exists - http://theeventwiki.com/Main_Page )

I'll definitely be back next week.  I enjoyed it.  Yeah, the flashbacks were a bit much but I really didn't mind.

So what do you think the "prisoners" are?  Aliens?  People from the future?  All we know so far is that they "are not Americans."

Thanks Travis - my thoughts exactly.  I couldn't help but be reminded of Sliders.

Well, the F-16 was disabled somehow from responding...so I would guess the limo was in the same lurch...just a guess

The difference is that Lost told a separate story, often from "long ago", that indirectly informed the present (if at all). When The Event jumps back eight minutes, my first reaction is: "This is an hour show, right? They could have done this in sequence." They pose a question -- why is he doing this? -- in order to answer it immediately. This increases both the "mystery" and "answer" factor, at the cost of being "juvenile" and "asinine".

I thinking Aliens, time-travelers, or alternate dimension visitors.  They could be something else, but that's my guess based on what little we've seen so far.

I loved the pilot, I didn't mind the time jumps since I just came off of watching the entire series of Lost over the summer and am quite used to them lol.

There really isn't anything I can point to that I didn't like about it so far although I would like to know how Sean got from the ship to knowing what had happened and what he had to do on the plane, who told him? If you ask me that couple they met had something to do with it, the girl in particular looked damn fishy to me.

My guess is that the plane went through a wormhole to another time but we'll see.

I'm sure all that and more will all be revealed...in about five years at the end of the series lol.
