Wider text layout

I know that narrow text columns is a long-standing complaint about the (now not so) new platform, but this most recent change makes them too wide for common browser widths. Because there is no "header" info on the sides, at about 1000 pixels, the text lines are 140 characters across. (One tweet per line?) That's twice as wide as they should be for readability.

At the max "liquid" width of about 1200 pixels, it's even worse.

Ken:

Go to your account profile > Edit Account Details > uncheck View Forums Full Width and see if that helps.

It was already unchecked. (I also had to fill in the birth date and location fields, which were blank, to submit any changes. Oh well.)

I toggled it back and forth. Apparently, that option controls whether the width is capped around 1200 (unchecked, and already too wide) or completely unlimited to fill the width of the window (checked, and even worse).

Reading a paragraph of text should not cause neck/eye strain like watching a live tennis match. Lots of width is useful for displaying embedded tables and images, but plain paragraphs should be limited to a readable width.

Ken, I appriciate your commments, but it was something that has been heavily requested for a long time.

It's simply not feasible to make a dynamic width layout. Something's got to give. I didn't mind the narrow width either, but a lot of people here did. It's funny, my big bitch for a long time was the lack of the drop-down menu. Now it's back, and I find it awkward after having gotten used to the pop up menu. After a while, we'll get used to it.

The pop up menu will be making a return in the next month or two, but it will be right next to the forums tab/button on the top allowing for easier navigation to a specific forum from the home page, PM page, etc.

It just goes to show the only change people like is the type they find in the sofa. :)

The drop menu won't be taken away will it?  I never got used to the pop up menu and absolutely hate it.  I like the drop down menu so much more.

No, The drop menu will stay where it is now on the top and bottom of the page.  The popup menu will be added in addition to the very top of the page next to the FORUMS button/tab

While Huddler's at it, any chance of implementing some sort of a quote block breaking function into the post editor?  Even just a sorta hack to do something like the following?

OR is there a way for the editor to take some simple plug-in code or something so I can do my own?   Something that would allow me to insert this html code "</div><p/><p/><div class='quote-block'>" into specific locations in the quote block w/out switching to Source mode would be enough -- maybe a right-click insert HTML code function since the editor already overrides right-click w/ its own popup commands.

Now that I'm using Firefox, wish there was a simple way to do search-and-replace w/ it (and maybe store libraries of quickly repeatable search-and-replaces or macros or similar).  Then I could at least just insert my own special tag like "###QUOTE-BREAK###" into the quote block and then just flip into Source mode for a quick search-and-replace and then back -- so I don't have to eyeball-parse the HTML source to find the right places to insert the quote block breaks.

Man-

We are working on an alternate "manual" editor.  Initially it will be rolled out to mobile devices and then compulter users will have the option between choosing from the current editor or manual editor.  I would think that would be easier for you to do in the manual editor, not to mention the manual editor will have increased BBCode support.  My guess is we are still 2-3 months away from it, but it is actively being worked on.
