HTF was just updated to the latest SW version

The latest update was just loaded.  Here is what's new:

  • Forum navigation enhancements
    • With this release, you'll see some great changes to forum navigation.  This includes a revamped Forum Nav with a simpler forum jump, links to the dedicated subscriptions page and the All New Posts page, as well as a bigger and better "Start a New Thread" button.

  • Towards the bottom of thread and forum index pages, you'll see a new version of a forum crumbtrail popping in.  This includes readily available links to the home page, the forum one level up, the subscriptions page, and the All New Posts page.

  • As part of this change, the Advanced Reply button is now labeled "Full Page Editor".
  • Forum post wrapping into the right column
    • That's right, goodbye to the long right column!  With this release, you'll see posts (specifically those which begin after the content in the right column ends) wrap to fill the full width of the screen.
  • Dedicated Subscriptions page
    • This new page has two tabs - an activity tab and an edit tab.  The Activity tab mirrors the existing activity stream view into your subscriptions.  The Editing tab helps brings this into the forefront to help you discover how to make subscriptions work best for you.
    • This page will be linked in the main site header below the private message count as well as in the Forum Nav at the top and bottom of forum and thread pag
  • Bug fix: PM pagination is now fixed - PMs after the most recent 50 were not properly paginating.  This has now been resolved.
  • Bug fix: YouTube videos are now embeddable using the embed code with the video tool - Previously, embedding videos with the embed tool was functional with the YouTube URL but was not parsing correctly with the embed code.  This has now been resolved.
  • Bug fix: User popup menu is now appearing in the right location in iOS - Previously, the user popup menu was popping up in the wrong location on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.  This has now been resolved.
  • Bug fix: Editing a list now shows proper symbols - Previously, certain symbols were appearing as HTML on a list page in edit mode.  This has now been resolved.

This is a significant upgrade, thanks for the notes.  I like the new graphical buttons, also.  Nice polishing touch

I know I haven't yet learned as much about the system as I should in order to properly manage my activity here, so I hesitate pointing out that I think something's not working correctly.  But here goes!

Since this update was turned on, every time I go to the Home page, the filter to my subscriptions gets automatically turned on, so I have to turn it off to display all threads.  I tried removing all subscriptions (no big deal, it was just a few) and that didn't help because it still takes the time to filter before telling me very nicely that it hasn't found any.  Does that make sense?  Is this a "problem" or a "feature"?

Charles, Good catch/call.  It looks like you found a bug.  I was able to duplicate it.  I'll get it reported.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Charles, we should have a fix for that out sometime late tomorrow.

The dropdown menu makes its return! I'm sure there will be happy members.

I already reported this yesterday to the team. Glad you heard back from them Adam. I haven't heard a thing.

Wow. The forum looks better than ever, great work guys!

And with posts now filling the entire width of the screen, I'm... I'm... so happy. [wipes tear]

Am I dreaming or is there really a dropdown for forum navigation?  I thought I was on the wrong site....

Forums 101:  No wasted space and easy navigation.

Now how do I remove all the sidebar junk I don't want to see?

See, was that so hard?

Next stop, mobile safari improvements?

We are working hard to get there.  When it comes to mobile it is still going to be a while before there is a complete site wide solution (it is being worked on), but you will continue to see incremental improvements.  I think three of the last four updates have had something mobile specific in them, so it should be gradually improving.

Nice work, y'all!

FWIW, looks like I've finally dumped IE6 for good now -- using FireFox and IE8 alternately (and Bitstream Bolt on my Blackberry).

One thing.  I think I've gotten used to the narrower post view, especially on the more modern browsers, and find this full width view a tad too wide -- I saw a complaint elsewhere and agree to some extent.  Would be nice if we can have the option to stick w/ the narrower view, especially if it can be switched on-the-fly, ie. in cases where a wider view would obviously benefit like certain grids/tables, etc.  The on-the-fly idea is really just a nice-to-have of course.

Hmmm...  Interestingly, the Bitstream Bolt browser (on my Blackberry) manages to automatically wrap the post text w/in the wider view so that it can still all fit into the device's screen width (even though it still renders the post view area itself at full width).

Terrific. Looks so much better at least on iPhone.

This is a fairly common tactic on mobile (small screen) browsers. Text flows are wrapped to the lesser of the layout width and the screen width, so you can read without scrolling horizontally. Sometimes it's not very sophisticated. For example, if there's a blockquote, it doesn't take into account that the text is indented on left, and so a little bit gets cut off on the right, because that same maximum width is used. It might be evident in this very post, where I quote you.

It might also be seen in the first post, with its indented bullet list. The text paragraph for each bullet is wrapped to screen width, but because they're indented at different levels, you have to do a bit of side-to-side shimmy to actually read everything. Obviously, if you can indent arbitrarily deep, there's no general magic solution, but if the indent is just one level (in addition to the top-level bullets) it could be wrapped so you can read everything without horizontal scrolling.

This tactic is suited for when the display leans toward "pixel-accurate" representation, showing a viewport on a larger page. Another tactic is to show the whole (width of the) page, but then zoom the text only so that it is (barely) readable; in that case, the text flow indents are unchanged.

Me too.  But not completely.  So I'm not admitting defeat here but willing to accept that a user selectable option that defaults to a sane width is best.

The Bitstream Bolt browser seems to do some hybrid of what you described, and yes, it handles the various block quotes in this thread very well at least in the zoomed mode (and font setting) that I permanently use.

Accurate presentation seems to be their strong suit though it does have its share of quirks particular in handling trickier controls and javascript -- inputs and clicks often need to be submit 2x for such cases. And it doesn't fully render Flash items, but just throws an (accurate) initial presentation on the page.

Those kinds of quirks are probably unavoidable for the most part though some may involve certain tradeoffs.
