Does Overscan make a mockery of "Full HD 1080" ?

Hi Folks,

I am very much into HD video... both commercial movies and HD video that I produce myself...

So far I have tested both Sony and Panasonic Blu-ray disc players and found them to have Overscan.... even when connected with HDMI cable....

I could understand reasons for overscan using analog interfaces..... but why would anyone want overscan in an end-to-end DIGITAL system ?????

Consumers are purchasing HDTV's with "Full" 1920 x 1080 native resolution.....  surely after pixels have been "lost" to Overscan.... and the remaining pixels "replicated" to fill the screen..... there is no longer a ONE-TO-ONE relationship between individual pixels in an HD frame and the pixels on your display.

Can the technical crew elaborate on this...  and offer some suggestions ???

Thanks,

Stephen Mendes

Stephen-

Welcome to Home Theater Forum.  This is a question that is better suited for our video area, so I am going to move it there.

Overscan is generally a product of the display, not the player. Most displays should have some 1:1 pixel mode, but this is rarely the default.

That said, overscan isn't necessarily bad, and home video has just never existed in a state where 1:1 image mapping is often practical.

Not long ago the vast majority of HD displays sold were 720p, and soon our displays will commonly feature resolutions larger than 1920x1080-- while content will remain 1080p. The added display pixels make for a smoother image. This is exactly the relationship we have in digital theaters today, most of which now project at 4k, but they're projecting 1080p images.
