What are you playing right now? - Page 7

Portal 2. Finished in 13 hours. Just finished my second run of Portal 1 in 1 or 2 hours (I think... it took 8 hours the first time and now it says 10). Absolutely LOVE the closing bits...worth playing over and over and over again just to see and hear that... Cake! Haha! I'll go through Portal 2 again later. Portal 3 can't come fast enough, even though I'm pinning like crazy for the next Halflife. They can stop with the Left4deads for now.

Terrania. had to go online and get hints on how to place background walls and remove wood things, and some background things. This thing looks so simple, but there's so much to keep you busy and exploring. Can't believe all this gameplay was $2.50. Crazy nostalia.

Dead Island.
Just a little here and there. No overly impressed. Gets boring fast. Big disappointment.

Dead Space 1.
Getting started where I left off after a hiatus. Not the easiest thing to do since I'm on a challenging part (that round low G room with the snaky things). Really want to finish this since I just picked up the sequel.

Chaser. Got this free with blue coins from gamersgate. Dated in every way, but somewhat fun.

Lots of off and on with everything except for the Portals.

My dad's been a pain in the butt...he's not a gamer but he has Steam for a couple of puzzle games he likes and it tells him every time I'm playing something. He's knows there's something else i"m supposed to be doing. what a nightmare1 Luckily he doesn't know how to message me through Steam. Whew!

I stopped playing the Red Dead zombie thing in the middle and figure I would never be able to just jump back in after all these months. I'll probably have to just start it again.

Yep! Me too! But I have such a backlog I can't restart games anymore. Maybe restart and play just long enough to get the controls down again (most games sort of teach you everything right at the beginning). Dead Space has several things I forget to use even after playing a while.

Just finished Uncharted 3 yesterday and, frankly, I'm kind of disappointed. The shooting mechanics were better in 2, there's no cheat/bonus system (for things like infinite ammo, invincibility, etc.) for the single player game, and you can only have a chase/running/explosion sequence so many times in a game before the biggest one at the end is kind of played out. I'm not sure if my expectations were too high or if the game is just ok, but it's sort of a let down. My lack of enthusiasm for multiplayer (in any game, really) makes me almost regret paying full price since there's half a game I don't want to play and I feel let down by the part that I did play.

Up next, Batman.

Just sort of waiting for Skyrim to come out, at this point.

...Waiting.

...Waiting.

^ You'll drive yourself cuckoo! At least load up Oblivion and play a bit.

Back on Portal 1. Forgot about those advanced levels. Really good challenge! I still need to look and see if Portal 2 has these as well...

That's about it except for demos of stuff steam had on sale: Fortex 2 and Wallace & Gromit adventure games. Those are both fun but I passed for now.
I can't stop playing Batman: Arkham City. I even have Battlefield 3, which I've only played about 10 minutes, but I am totally addicted to Batman.
Finished up Portal 1 second time. I didn't finish that final advanced level the first time I played through. Pretty challenging. glad I got it this time. Would LOVE more levels for these games.

Now, Terrania more. That hint guy won't leave the big house with the impressive basement (complete with indoor swimming pool) I built. furious.gif How do I charge him rent? Can't recommend this little game enough for retro/rpg fans. Really really fun. Deceptively simple at the beginning.

Super Mario 3D Land. Really cool game. It's like having Super Mario Galaxy 2 in your pocket, minus the gravity gameplay and plus a timer and flagpoles. The flagpoles represent the biggest change from the previous 3D Marios, since this is the first one where you play the level one time through; there's no returning to earn new stars and to find new paths to explore. You're basically trying to get to the end while optionally looking for three hidden coins. The timer really contributes to making this the game truest to the sidescrollers. If the goal with 64 was to make it feel like the same game as Super Mario Bros. but in 3D, this game finally achieves that goal. It still feels totally 3D, though. Don't let my description or reviews fool you into thinking the whole game is a locked sidescroller. It's, as I said, very much like SMG 2.

I've had the 3DS since launch, but I've mainly played 2D games on it to date. I was a little worried about the circle pad, since I didn't like it with Mario Kart DS (knowing full well that the game wasn't designed to be used with the circle pad). It controls great. Excellent. I've never felt like I wasn't in control, and I've yet to have an issue with the camera. Now, I do have a bit of trouble finding the 3D sweet spot. If I move the 3DS a little to one side or the other, I'm blind until I can get it back into position. Again, this goes back to the fact that I've mainly played 2D games with it to date. I suppose I'll get used to it.

As cool as this game is, Mario Kart 7 looks even better. cool.gif

skyrim has made me it's beotch.

Like Radioman...Skyrim. Like a muthafuck.

Skyrim although I really want to spread my time around.... I come back to Skyrim!

I've finally moved over to playing Battlefield 3, as a break from Batman.
Just picked up Orcs Must Die. Looks like a blast. Was playing a little Darwinia yesterday. Wonderfully little retro looking thing with big hooks. Well...fish hooks compared to Skyrims anchors of Joy that spike you like Leatherface's meat hook!! biggrin.gif

Rocksmith. WOW!

Sadly, where I'm staying at the moment only has an HDMI connection, so there's noticeable lag. Kind of a bummer when you're trying to play an actual instrument. Can't wait to get my own HT rig back up and running. . .

Back to going through PixelJunk Monsters/Encore again on PS3.. maybe the best tower defense game ever.

Breaking from Skyrim.

Playing:
Trine. Replaying this one for the 3rd time. I love this little game. Hoping the sequel has animated cut scenes instead of the static pictures. That is the only "improvement" I need...the rest should be left alone, just new graphics and levels. I hope they don't mess with the overall idea.

Enclave. Old hack/slasher. REALLY fun. Wish I'd picked this up when I first played the demo 2002 or so. I was playing RUNE at the time and this is a great followup to that title. Same kind of thing. VERY challenging. I mean, don't play if you don't like a challenge even on middle difficulty level. You really have to learn effective weapons use to make it anywhere. Also, you have to finish a level to save your game. So I'm stuck on a level now...but it is fun. Oh...you get get save places throughout each level but you lose gold with each death and if you quit the game you go back to the very beginning of the level. Gamersgate had this for $4 and I caved. Was waiting on GOG to give it a $2.99... I plan to wait it out on another oldie like this called Crusaders of Might & Magic. Nobody liked that one but I've played that demo recently and when it first came out. I really like it...

A Magnetic Adventure. Picked this puzzle game up at amazon's black friday sale. Relaxing, not terribly difficult... quite well made for a simple Windows Indie game. Well worth the $2. A real go-to at the moment.

Demolition Inc. Stress reducing little gem. Smashing things from the safely of my little flying saucer...now that's a happy place I'm at right there!

Oh, Orcs Must Die IS fun. KInd of hard too..

Still playing Skyrim on the PS3, waiting for it to completely crash out before trying something else. I got the first three Assassins Creeds waiting for that moment :(

Thanks to gog.com's sale, NOX. And I can't stop. Just an old game but... can't stop.

Planning to move, I've borrowed about five games from a buddy, including Mass Effect. And my wife gave me Portal 2 for Christmas. I hope to get back into some gaming in 2012 :)

If nothing else, I can wear a bit of gaming:

Science to do Portal

NOX, still. Love the troll things that fart poisonous clouds when they die. That there is some gaming excellence right there! biggrin.gif

Crysis. Was able to set it up so the final level on the carrier kind of sort runs smoothly. Crazy, the game played beautifully with custom super detailed settings until I hit that last level and it became unplayable. I have Warhead waiting to be played but I couldn't finish the original. Now, Crysis 2 is onsale at gamersgate for about $10 and I can't justify the purchase yet. But now I'll soon get started on warhead. And they'll be another sale.

Funny, I'm playing the 10 year old Nox instead of Skyrim. lol ...Nox reminds me more of Shadowlands on my old Amiga than of Baldur's Gate.

Best $3 I spent in a long while. I mean, I waste $3 like nobody business. I hardly ever get this many hours of enjoyment out of anything I've spend $3 on... really, search my brain but...empty. Just Nox comes up.

I remember playing the heck out of Nox back in the day. I'm still trying to split my time between MW3 and Skyrim.

I have been playing Zelda Skyward Sword for a good week now.  As a follow up to Twilight Princess (which I loved) it's right up there, but some of the motion control stuff is frustratingly finicky (and whomever designed the underwater spin move to shoot over obstacles needs to be imprisoned for crimes against humanity -- it's that bad).  At some point, I thought I was at the halfway point -- turns out I'm at the second third point.  So I've still got quite a while to go.

I guess I should be savoring every moment as this is my console gaming swan song.  The Wii is the last console I'll ever own, and my days of plunking down $50 (or even $60) for games are over.

Havent played it yet, but when it comes time to get parts of a song, do the desert third. Anything else will require you to wait for a save repair from Nintendo.

I picked up "God of War III" at Gamestop this week for $17.   I totally agree,  I will never again buy games on release day.  I picked up GWIII and LA Noire also for $17, so $34 for both.   That wouldn't have picked me up either when new.. not even close.

@dmiller. A fellow Nox fan. Cool! I'm still lovin it. I have been craving Skyrim a bit. And I picked up a few more oldies at gamersgate. But I doubt any will take me away from Nox at the moment.

Downloading the Silmarils Collection, $5.95. Mainly I wanted Ishar. Disappointing combat even when it came out, but the game still floored me on my old Amiga. The look of the wilderness was so new at the time. Eye of the Beholder had woody areas that were like walls. But Ishar looked like forests with trees, water ways. Ishar 2 AGA was probably the best looking game I had at the time.

Also got the X-com pack for $1.27. I think most fans should revisit that or first timers should discover its excellence. Have they even come up with something newer that matches X-com and X-com 2? Hell, those games still scare the shit out of me. biggrin.gif The UFO games aren't bad... but I'd sure like somebody to come and truly do a reboot of X-com and X-com Terror of the Deep in a single game. Keep it retro... but update it to modern standards at the same time.

A lot of this is spot on:

10 Stupid Things Terribly Wrong with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

The part about how Zelda makes you feel smarter for solving the dungeon puzzles might be the most on point observation about the game.

Hanson, why no more console gaming?

Those video game industry folks who are salivating over the idea of killing the market for used games are in for a rude awakening when (if) they find out how many $60 titles are not going to be sold when people can't trade in old games toward them.

It's the end of console gaming for me because:

1) With two kids, I can barely find time to play anything much less a complete time suck like Super Mario Galaxy or Zelda.  But I will make an exception for those games.  Anything else?  Forget it.  And when I do have time, I have my phone, my tablet, and TV to occupy it.  Zelda comes at a good time because there's barely anything on TV and I'll have a week off of work soon.  But if this were the middle of March, there's no way I would be able to play it.

2) As someone who bought multiple $79 games for the N64 back in the day (and this was 90's money) I shouldn't really be saying this but.. I can't afford to buy a $50 game more than once a year.  It's just too much money nowadays, especially when  I can buy games for $.99 on my phone.  They are nowhere near as good, but they fit my schedule and budget better.  Even worse, I would have to couple my $50/$60 game purchase with a brand new console for $300 or whatnot.  So this is just too much money for playing two Marios and a Zelda over its lifetime.

3) I just never got into the XBox or PS style of games.  I mean, I can't use those controllers at all.  I can beat games on Nintendo consoles, but I can barely play games on Sony or MS consoles.  I spent thirty minutes getting killed repeatedly in the intro level of Uncharted and I didn't even kill anyone.  Shit, I don't even think I hit anyone.  It's bizarre, but I find those games to be... unplayable.  Which brings me to...

4) The pool of games I like are shrinking while at the same time they're getting stale.  I know lots of people weren't that fond of Twilight Princess, but I loved it.  Oddly Skyward Sword is causing nerdgasms even though I find barely any difference between them -- they're like the same game.  SMG2 was fun.  It's was also essentially an add-on pack for SMG.  There was little fundamental difference between Wii Sports and Wii Resort.  BTW, those were the last three games I bought, only because I splurged last year and bought two whole games.  This will happen again.. never.

So it boils down to issues of time, money, and a lack of really appealing games.  I know most of the posters here grapple with the same things -- I've just decided to say no mas and walk away.
