Ninth grade was the best of times, and the worst of times. After having settled with my father, new stepmother, and pain in the butt stepbrother, I was finally able to resume sports. Another "worst" was the fact that instead of becoming a senior in East Cobb Junior High School, our class became freshmen at Wheeler High School. Regardless, we had a great football team. For the first time, I had girls wanting to talk to me. Practices were often Hell, but we soon came to realize our coaches knew what they were doing, molding us into an outstanding team. We didn't even have a home field for the regular season. We remained undefeated, and finally played at Wheeler Stadium in a night game against the team (Marietta High School) who had beat us for the championship in 7th grade. We beat them in a close game during the season, so we knew this would be a tough game.
As first string right guard, I spent a lot of time on the field that night. I was also on the kickoff and receiving teams. The game was scoreless into the second quarter, when we finally struck paydirt with a 35 yard trap play and faked the same play and swept the other way for the last 17 yards to the end zone.
Our defense held tight through the middle of the 4th quarter, but the momentum seemed to shift when the Blue Devils hit a 45 yard pass. another first down and it appeared they were going to score; first and goal on the three. They pressed forward to the two. On the next play, they attempted a sweep. One of our linebackers speared the ball with his helmet, causing a loos ball, Our largest player scooped it up and immediately lateraled it to our fastest defensive back. It was off to the races. He was knocked out of bounds at the Marietta forty.
Coach Jordon was not one to sit on the ball, especially since Marietta came so close to scoring.
We had passed maybe three times the whole game. This time, we hit them with a play action pass. Our fastest receiver was wide open and past their secondary when he caught the pass.
Our defense cracked down, and held them for their last two possessions. Final result: the Wheeler 9th Grade Wildcats football team became the first undefeated team in Wheeler High School history, besting the Marietta Blue Devils 14-0.
