Oppo BDP-83 Back to School Contest - Page 2

I just dropped off my son for his first day of kindergarten so this seems appropriate and timely.

He has never set foot in a daycare or other learning environment (other than visiting the school with his older sister for functions) so I had no idea what to expect. How would he react to all the other kids? How will he do with authority? What about the structure? Many of these fears were laid to rest this morning as got dressed faster than I have ever seen him get dressed before, downed his breakfast and proclaimed he was ready to go a whole 45 minutes before it was time to leave.

Upon finding his classroom and checking out his locker, he hurried up into the classroom and went right to playing with a couple other boys. I couldn't have drawn it up any better if I tried. My wife of course shed a tear and was a very proud mama as she watched her baby grow up right before her very eyes. I was proud too as I felt like I had done my job well as a stay-at-home dad.

Well mostly from what I been told but I went to a Pre-PreSchool all so long ago. Now the thing about it was I had to take an oral exam to see If I could get placed in the special Program.

I was asked a series of Questions and the First one was How many Tires does Your Dads Car Have?? I quickly answer 5 well the Teacher looks at me and say Jerry How many tires does your Dads car have, Again I say 5.

Well the Teacher somewhat confused ask Where is there 5 Tires on the car. I look at the Teacher, Mrs. ShoeKiteus and tell here there are 2 on the front and 2 on the rear and 1 in the trunk, Well obviously I was right but not the Normal answer of 4 they where looking for.

Well I get asked another question "Which way does water Travel Up or Down?? well I say both up & Down.. Again the Teacher is Puzzled and asks How can water Travel UP and Down, Well I said it comes Up from the Cellar and then Down the Drain.. ;)

Well Before my First day of School I was Teaching the Teachers and needless to say they had to Re-examine how the worded the Test..

It was a Fun Program and I remember going to the Action Room Almost Every Day..Most times they had to make me goto the other classes we had.. Argh Not as Fun as the Action Room!!

So it has to be my first day of high school in 1960 at James Madison HS in Brooklyn, NY. School started on the Monday, the week after Labor Day, September 12th. Also coming through that day was Hurricane Donna, one of the all-time great hurricanes and is the only hurricane of record to produce hurricane-force winds in Florida, the Mid-Atlantic states, and New England.

It was close to a mile walk to school, which was actually open for some reason, and I came close to stepping on some downed wire on the way home.

Fast forward 24 years, and my wife's name is Donna. Something poetic there...

Ninth grade was the best of times, and the worst of times.  After having settled with my father, new stepmother, and pain in the butt stepbrother, I was finally able to resume sports.  Another "worst" was the fact that instead of becoming a senior in East Cobb Junior High School, our class became freshmen at Wheeler High School.  Regardless, we had a great football team.  For the first time, I had girls wanting to talk to me.  Practices were often Hell, but we soon came to realize our coaches knew what they were doing, molding us into an outstanding team.  We didn't even have a home field for the regular season.  We remained undefeated, and finally played at Wheeler Stadium in a night game against the team (Marietta High School) who had beat us for the championship in 7th grade.  We beat them in a close game during the season, so we knew this would be a tough game.

As first string right guard, I spent a lot of time on the field that night.  I was also on the kickoff and receiving teams.  The game was scoreless into the second quarter, when we finally struck paydirt with a 35 yard trap play and faked the same play and swept the other way for the last 17 yards to the end zone.

Our defense held tight through the middle of the 4th quarter, but the momentum seemed to shift when the Blue Devils hit a 45 yard pass.  another first down and it appeared they were going  to score; first and goal on the three.  They pressed forward to the two.  On the next play, they attempted a sweep.  One of our linebackers speared the ball with his helmet, causing a loos ball,  Our largest player scooped it up and immediately lateraled it to our fastest defensive back.  It was off to the races.  He was knocked out of bounds at the Marietta forty.

Coach Jordon was not one to sit on the ball, especially since Marietta came so close to scoring.

We had passed maybe three times the whole game.  This time, we hit them with a play action pass.  Our fastest receiver was wide open and past their secondary when he caught the pass.

Our defense cracked down, and held them for their last two possessions.  Final result: the Wheeler 9th Grade Wildcats football team became the first undefeated team in Wheeler High School history, besting the Marietta Blue Devils 14-0.

My daughter started Kindergarten last week.  She was very excited to be starting school.  On their first day, the teacher asked them to draw a picture of something they had fun doing over the summer.  My daughter drew a picture of our family at the lake.  When I got home from work after her first day, she was excited to show me her picture.  She described each person in the picture..."this is Mom, this is Zach, this is me, and this is you, Dad".  When she pointed to the last stick figure, it only had 3 lines sticking up for hair - everyone else had a full head of hair.  When I asked her why this was, she looked at me sheepishly and rolled her eyes at my seemingly silly question, and said, "...because you don't have any hair Dad."  We all had a big laugh about that one, but my daughter seemed a bit sensitive about it.  I think she thought she had hurt my feelings.

Well, the next morning, she handed me a picture as I was getting ready to leave for work.  She told me it was a picture of her and me at the beach, and that she had drawn it for me to take to work.  She then showed me the picture and pointed to me with a huge smile, and said, "See, Dad, I gave you four hairs this time!!!"

Very sweet!
