Back to multiple video ads for "Guests"

I almost never run into this, but I had sent someone who is a non-HTF member a link to a thread I thought would interest him.  It took minutes before I got back a message of "what the hell" describing how two video ads were running.. WITH AUDIO.. along side the thread.

Now, when I log in as a forum member, I don't see these ads.. they go away, but he's right, I tried connecting as a "guest" and I received a Time Warner ad at the top and in the bottom, an ad for PineSol.

I thought this problem was beaten a long time ago!  It's good that it doesn't happen to registered users, but it's really hard to attract new users when they run into that, why would you sign up anywhere that pelts you with video ads that have the audio on?

I have no idea when this started because I can't think of the last time I looked at the site without being logged in, but wow... can someone else check this (I checked using a public PC 2:30PM to verify what he told me)

I'm on here quite a bit as "guest" because of the automated log-offs and have not noticed any audio. When I'm logged out I see multiple video ads on each page but they are always silent.  Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I heard audio from an ad whether I'm logged in or out.

Its been a while since ive seen it. And it was a major pain in the arse! I almost always have my computer speakers off anyway. But sometimes i like to listen to music.

I too thought this problem was past us. And it has been gone for me.   ***Knocks on wood***

I just saw this thread and logged-off to check things out.

As soon as I did and navigated to the home page, I ran into this ad for Jet-Dri Dish Soap and when I refreshed I got a similar ad for Clearasil Acne Medicine.

The only difference between these ads and the ones we members were seeing before is that these seem to appear with the audio muted.  At least they did for me.  That big red speaker on the ad is the indication that the audio was muted.  I clicked on it, the speaker turned green and the audio came blaring.  I had left the speaker green before the refresh and the Clearasil ad came on with the sound muted (and speaker icon red) again.

Yeah, I got those, I just had audio on.  But I've tried to replicate it since then, and although I get the video ads, the audio is muted.  That's OK.  So, I guess this is solved and maybe just a fluke in how the page rendered that one time.

I would certainly hope that all ads of that ilk show up with the audio muted--and give the user the chance to turn the audio on (if desired).  However, as our past experience has shown us, that's NOT always the case.

The thing I didn't like about my experience (and you can see this is my Firefox status bar--just above the "Start" button) is that the ads never seemed to be done fully loading and slowed my PC down quite a lot.

That could be another strike against the HTF by a guest user.

I have occasionally seen video adds, but they have always been muted and look very similar to what Mike shows in his screen grab.

Matt-

Thanks for the referral and ask him to give us another chance.

None of us ever reproduced it outside of that one time.  So, I would chalk that one up to some fluke.  He's happy :)
