Psych (season 5) on USA Network...

Apparently, Psych's 5th season starts Wednesday night (that's tomorrow, July 14/2010) at 10pm ET.

According to the USA Network website, it's a "super-sized" episode titled "Romeo and Juliet and Juliet" featuring Shawn and Gus caught between two rival Chinese Triad gangs.

I am really excited about this show premiering - it's one of the most entertaining shows at any time of the year.

I'm really going to be missing "Monk" tonight, since they made an ideal pair.

Solid season premiere. I was happy to see O'Hara face some real consequences for her ordeal in the last season finale. I was also happy they dialed back the over-casualness of the last season. The humor was still there, but they took the case seriously again.

"I know who the West side rapist is!" So far, the show's two for two with me this season.

The Val Kilmer line was hilarious.

That episode was back to the snappy "we're more interested in the character interplay than the mystery" style.

Hell, I'd already forgotten the basic problem by the time they solved it!

Thanks for sharing. I had no idea the show had shot on 16mm film for the first three seasons, but it makes sense because the look of the show definitely changed going into last season. I kind of prefered the less slick looking earlier seasons, but that's okay.

"Psych 2.0" is probably the first episode since the original "Mr. Yang" episode to feel as fresh as early season one. I liked the way Shawn had to step up his game, and it made the writers step up their game too. Nestor Carbonell reminds us of the comedic chops he displayed to great effect on "The Tick"; I hope he's recurring for the spring season.

Next week: the summer finale

I thought that you mean next week, but it seems that tonight's (Sept 8) episode "One, Maybe two, ways out" is the summer finale.

I both like and dislike these half-season things.  They just go by too fast.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I was talking about last week's episode so when I said "Next week: the summer finale" I meant tonight's episode.

I figured.  I was just in a semi-panic when I saw that today and then found out that today was the finale, just wanted to make sure that nobody else was caught off guard.

Apparently "Shawn 2.0" is going to be in 3-4 episodes this season, maybe more.

Terrific midseason finale. After losing the pulse of the Shawn/Juliet dynamic during the Abigail episodes, they really found it again the last two episodes. That kiss is something we've been waiting for for a long, long time.

Abigail was necessary to move Shawn along. Otherwise he never becomes "Serious Shawn" and gets overheard by Juliet. All in all, though a bit tumultuous, I've liked how they've handled moving these characters forward. Juliet especially has had some rocky moments since Mr. Yin's kidnapping, so it all is working towards a good territory here, but they've wisely left some potholes in the road to navigate around.

Must say my favorite small touch of the episode was Juliet hinting that she's on to Shawn's facade of being psychic when she questions him about the three plates. I don't think when Shawn eventually reveals to Juliet that he's just really observant and not psychic that it will be a true "reveal" to her. She's figuring it out on her own. The question is how they will handle her accepting Shawn for owning up and being truthful. In any case, just blurting it out like Declan did may be something she can respect, but it wouldn't be Shawn's best choice since they've known each other for years. It'll have to come out more "naturally", if you will. Not sure how to do that, but I'm sure the writers will figure it out.

In any case, the fact that she understands that he covers for Declan by lying to her about the plates shows that while she may value truth she actually values those with loyalty more, since "lies" are not really the things people have a problem with, but rather the deception that comes with lies that are meant to conceal sincerity or some form/act of betrayal. Shawn may play the psychic, but it's to enable his sincerity and ability to help others, not to hinder or back stab. Overhearing Shawn's admission that her being with Declan was "killing him" and then having him give his blessing because he valued her happiness more than his own is exactly the quality one wants in a partner.

All that being said, the show's major strength continues to be the awesome banter between Shawn and Gus. "Maybe she's dressing you with her eyes. Ever think about that?"

The whole lie subplot in "Shawn 2.0" seemed a bit off to me at the time, because I'd been under the assumption that everyone at the SBPD had figured out the truth, and that the psychic act was just a pretense he had to keep up because of the imminent prosecution that would occur should everything be formally out in the open. I think you nailed it with the plates thing; by being loyal to his chief romantic rival, Shawn was confirming that image of him that Juliet had overheard on the radio.

I really liked the Abigail episodes because James Roday and Rachael Leigh Cook had chemistry out the ass. The problem is that that naturally put the Shawn/Jules dynamic on the backburner, which made the cases of the week far less interesting. In the season premiere, she was still shell shocked by the trauma of last season's finale, and the few times they hung out were entirely platonic. It was nice seeing them get back to the heart of the matter.

I think the principles at the SBPD know he's not psychic. Lasseter has always doubted it, Chief Vick has her suspicions but lets him roll with it since he gets results, and Jules is maybe the one most willing to believe it, but at this point she's wised up that he's using other methods she can't quite put a finger on. So, yeah, they're mostly just accepting it at this point because it works. Does anyone even think Chief Vick would prosecute him after all this time? She threatened that when he first came on, but after all the times he's come through I doubt it.

On another note, I really liked the episode where Shawn and Juliet team up at work, because it drove home a key point: Shawn and Jules are not good at being work partners. That's not their dynamic. Shawn and Gus are a great work team, and Jules and Lasseter are a great work team. Where Shawn and Jules works is outside the office relationship. Yes, they banter when on the case, but that's between the real detective work for the most part. It was a good episode to have to illustrate that even if they get together outside of work the partnership with Gus is still absolutely vital to Shawn.

My DVR recorded a new episode last night. I guess the show is back for the second half of the season.

It is now the only show on USA I watch so I had no idea it was back. I usually trust someone here would have posted a warning... smile.gif

It was an especially good episode.

I am suprised that there seems to ba a lack of comments in this thread. I hope this doesn't mean people have abandoned Psych. :(

I have not seen an episode of the show since it moved away from Friday evenings.  But, I will be picking up the DVDs of the series -- my wife and I were even discussing this as we were thinking of gifts to give each other for the holidays. :)

It was a great episode. I think seeing how things play out next week will help me form more of an opinion on everything moving forward.

Glad they finally pulled the trigger with Shawn and Jules. As much as I liked Abigail, the show looses its potency when you don't have Shawn's back and forth with Juliette. I also like Cary Elwes's recurring appearances as the art thief, sort of the other end of the spectrum from the Mr. Yang thing.

Oops I posted in the wrong thread, the search came up with Season 4's thread above Season 5's.Anyway, the Twin Peaks episode tonight was completely awesome.
