The Glades (season 1 on A&E)

Caught this premiere last night having heard almost nothing about the show beforehand.  I guess that Barnes & Noble in the US had some freebie promotion with the script from the first episode leading up to things.

Anyhow -- A&E showed this with limited ads last night for the 10pm ET premiere.  It's about a homicide cop into golf that was run out of Chicago for allegedly sleeping with his Captain's wife.  He finds himself in the Everglades in Florida trying to play golf, but having to solve crimes along the way.

I didn't actually recognize anyone in the first episode other than Drew Carey's brother (the cop's partner), but it was a pretty fun show.  Played a bit like some of the USA shows (Monk, Psych, etc) with the humor carrying the show along.

Overall, pretty decent first episode, and I think that I'll give next week's a try too.  Anyone else catch it?

I recorded it, intrigued by the promos I caught.  Plus I always like to catch at least of few episodes of any "south Florida" show, if only to laugh at how obvious it is when they're being shot in L.A.  (Silk Stalkings was the all time champ, with the wrong kind of plam trees and freaking mountains in the background of every shot.  The highest point within thirty miles miles of Palm Beach, where the cop show is supposedly set, is a landfill in North Lauderdale that rises all of 60 or 70 feet above the otherwise pooltable-flat terrain.)

But I probably won't have time to watch it until later this week.  Will post then.

Later,

Joe

Pretty funny.   I lived in FLA for a few years and joked that I would go exploring some of the natural Sinkholes just so I could look up at something.   I think the highest natural point in the State is 300 feet above Sea Level and below Orlando 50 feet might be a reach

The show was interesting and I dd laugh a good bit, but the whole smart-ass maverick cop routine seems to be wearing thin with so many shows with the same routine.

Gorgeous 'Single' Mother putting herself through Med School/Law School/College with misunderstood acting out smart-ass teen/preteen child.

Husband/Boyfriend/Ex in prison/AA/NA/Abuser setting up a future meeting of Cop/Ex (though nobody will handle it quite like Dexter).

Sparks lit early.

Still as long as the writing is sharp it seemed to get off to a decent start.

I like this show a lot.  It's well cast.  Some shows have a star that totally carries the show, but the supporting characters are well acted here.  Good writing too.

I noticed  something unusual about the captions which I posted in a separate thread here: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/302340/close-captions-censorship.

I wasn't as much of a fan of some of the interactions in episode 2, although the "intern" was a lot of fun, as were the numerous misunderstandings, innuendos, and such between Jim and every woman in his orbit.

The mystery was actually decently clever, but chunks were telegraphed a bit too early as compared to episode one.  I have been enjoying it thus far though.

Oh, and not watching the captions, the use of grawlixes is very odd, especially when (at 10pm ET) they let all sorts of language go.

This week's episode was a bit predictable -- I figured the ending about 20 minutes in, but the way they played it out with the hospital patient was very well done and brought a lot of doubt into the equation.

Am I the only one actually still watching this show? :)

No, there's at least two of us.  I like this show and hope it gets renewed.

I watch it as well. It is a good summer programming without being outlandish. It is nice that it isn't in Miami with all of the typical cliches.

I loved the psychic episode and the fact that Cassadaga ("Psychic Capital of the World")  is a real place in Florida just makes it that much more fun.

It's a fun little day trip if you're tired of Daytona or Orlando and definitely unique.

I really wasn't that interested in watching yet another smart ass cop show but the actors and script make it work. So far I am liking it and look forward to the next episode.

I just hope it gets enough of a following that they keep it in production. I hate getting attached to a new show just to have them kill it the next season.

Reports are that it is doing reasonably well on A&E, drawing over 3 million viewers each week, and hit a series high in the 18-49 male range this week.  That bodes decently well.

I was thinking in the back of my mind, "there's a real little town like this in FL, isn't  there?"

I've noticed that of the series I like a lot (Closer, Mentalist, Rizzole & Isles, Memphis Blues, Bones, and The Glades) that they all have good writing and interesting supporting characters.  Yes, they have a central star, but the supporting characters are well written and acted.

This week's episode with the Tribal Police and all was a lot of fun.  Some good tension between the two, and even more so between our "romantic pair" as things start to settle themselves out and fall into place.  The writing for Jeff (the son) is very well done, as he does display a lot of the innocence in attitude of a child of that age.

Four more episodes left, and it sounds like the ratings are continuing to be quite good for the show. Hopefully that bodes well for a renewal.

I get the feeling we're going to see the tribal officer character again.  I hope so, I  liked here "attitude."

I finally caught up on the last two week's episodes -- if I'm not mistaken there are only two left now.

This week's was actually quite a lot of fun with the whole treasure hunting thing.  And the girl leaving the residence without a shirt?  Good wobbly. :)

I do like the character growth shown of late, but I'm a bit disappointed that we haven't seen Jeff (the son) for the last few episodes.

A bit of a turnaround from the last few shows with episode 12.  Not entirely unexpected though, but Jim's reaction almost was.

I did really like how he turned the tables on everyone as the investigation was wrapped up though.  That was very much in character.

This coming Sunday's episode is the last one of season 1.  I'm curious to know if they're going to hit us with a cliffhanger, or if it's going to be a semi-season/show wrapup -- I believe that they'd finished shooting and had it all in the bag before they got news of the renewal...

When the relationship started getting a bit iffy between Jim & Callie, I thought uh oh.  I then thought that is one complicated relationship they've got and both their reactions were true-to-life.  And there's the kid.  He does like Jim but he loves his father more.  And then they go and have the  prison hubby/dad giving good advice to the kid and seeming quite reasonable.

BTW, I was looking at IMDB and there's a "Casino Party Girl" played by the same actress that's been in 5 episodes.  I hadn't noticed they had been in a casino in 5 episodes.

Well, we know how accurate IMDB is all the time.

I think that she's only been in the one episode.  The others were user added mistakes I expect.

I like the show but it is starting to get dangerously close to destroying itself with the relationships between Jim and the two women.  Many a show has been sunk because they either over-complicated the sexual tension or eliminated it by having the mains get married.  The show works because the characters and cases are interesting and fun but the relationships are not necessary for the show so I would hate to see it tank because the writers start focusing on that.

Some excellent tension between Callie and Heather in the season finale.  The whole case revolving around golf was quite suitable for the show, and the episode's title was "Breaking 80", which has been a theme since the start of the first episode.

An interesting twist at the end of things, and I'm looking forward to season 2.  It was a nice little late summer diversion.

Heads Up!

Season 2 starts tonight  (June 5, 2011) on A&E.   I'm sure someone will start a S2 thread somewhere.

And the season 2 thread is where Scott-S's post has been moved.  Thanks for posting the link, Alex, you beat me to it.  smile.gif
