Why are some TV shows on SyFy showing black bars at the sides on a widescreen HD show? I can't seem to get rid of them. Its like a black box around the program. It only seems to be like this on SYFY HD.

I suspect it's because they are too cheap to upgrade the old non 16:9 Standard Definition broadcast masters they've been using for many years. (Many shows were shooting in HD long before anyone was broadcasting it that way.) Or else the studios that made shows such as Enterprise and SG-1 haven't sent out new HD masters yet.
At least they aren't stretching out 4:3 content like TNT does.

Since the masters are SD resolution anyway, you might as well go to the SD feed and crop that.

Its a disgrace. I'd rather not watch than play with my TV picture settings all the time.
