1776 not coming to Blu-ray in 2012 (See post #286) - Page 10

With the Twilight people getting access to Sony/Columbia libray, there is a chance we may get a few titles that Sony would not bother about. I didn't know "The Adventures of Milo and Otis " was such a masterpiece!!!

It's not

Mentioned "1776" on Twilight Time's Facebook page today. They said they would love to release "1776" and also repsoned:

Twilight Time DVD Label We have expressed our interest in this title to Sony, but so far no decision has been made.

...but here is the big question if Twilight Time were

to release this title....

If it goes to Twilight, then Sony doesn't feel confident

it will sell well under their label.

Would Sony put the effort into the kind of deluxe

release fans are salivating for?

No, they won't. We'll get the Blu-ray version of the cut on the DVD, a perfectly fine release, but it won't have the extras we all crave or offer the missing pieces some of us want to see reinserted (I'm not in the camp arguing for everything on the laserdisc to be restored to the film proper, but I think the two songs that still have missing pieces could be altered).

I'm only in favor of Twilight TIme getting it IF Sony has no interest in it otherwise.

Does it really matter?  It's not like the members of this board have any say in the decisions made by SONY's management team. SONY may feel they'd be lucky to sell 3,000 units.  How many units did Pioneer sell of the laser disc?

I would prefer that Sony release this title.

If Sony releases the current cut DVD of the film onto Blu, there's no way I'll be buying.  The PSE laser is the ultimate edition, and anything less is a pass for me.

You know what?

I think with this announcement today, I am feeling

more confident that Sony will not be releasing any

extensive fan edition of 1776 to Blu-ray.

Fox is throwing one of their most classic gems

to Twilight Time.  Sony is doing the same with

a big 1997 Academy Award winner.

What hope do we have for a smaller classic

to get deluxe treatment?

I am not here to say that 1776 is completely

off the table to get the extensive treatment we

had all hoped for.   It's just that things have gone

oddly silent around here lately as far as this title

is concerned.   Meanwhile, you can plainly see

that the studios are getting far less confident about

releasing popular catalog favorites through their own

label.

I truly hope that plans are still on the table for a

fan release.  This is the very last opportunity Sony

has to do this kind of treatment on the film.

Criterion? Kino? The overseas market? I look at TT and then I look at Eureka in the UK; just half a dozen or so enthusiasts who do stellar work licensing titles sometimes from major studios, with superb extras and at a reasonable price in a market a fraction of the size of the US. It's not gone. Not at all.

When was the last time Sony licensed something

like this to those companies?

I understand the potential of what could be done,

but in reality, it usually never is.

....but I will tell you what....

You know I am one of the biggest advocates for

this film.  I am not giving up on it.  I will talk to

someone over at Sony about these options to

see if they would agree to licensing out all the

available material to a company willing to invest

in putting it all together and releasing it.

I can at least do that

John,

Thank you for that.

My only additional question would be,

has Sony ever given Criterion a project

like 1776 where there was a wealth of additional

material that needed to be added and branched?

I'm sort of looking for a comparable example.

I can't think of a single Criterion BD that has seamless branching; there you have me.

That's the kind of first they could make a lot of in their advertising if they wanted to.

IMPORTANT

Okay, I have some new information this evening

about 1776....

The title will not be release to Blu-ray this year.

It has been taken off Sony's schedule.

Perhaps we will see it next year, but only with your help.

I believe we have very good support behind us

in seeing it released, but unfortunately studios are

looking at these kind of releases a lot differently than

they were a year ago (see my post #279).

Now...

Will need some help from all of the fans of this film.

Sony needs to be pushed to realize that there is a

sizable amount of people willing to purchase a deluxe

version on Blu-ray.

If enough people write letters and post their wishes

on Sony's Facebook and Twitter account, the thought

is that the project could be put back on the front burner.

I have tried to post something on their Facebook page

but it doesn't look like Sony is allowing new posts -- only

comments for existing ones.

I generally don't tweet, but if people are allowed to post

to their Twitter feed, that would work as well.

Perhaps someone can help me figure that out.

Additionally, those of you that frequent other forums

need to take this message there  as well.  We need

enthusiasts from all over the Internet to flood Sony with

requests for this title.

Of course, be polite.

Be sure to mention you want a deluxe Director's version

with all the deleted materials.

Also, since I am feeling lazy (actually I am at work), if

someone wants to post Sony's Home Entertainment

Division address, we can hopefully entice members to

send snail mail to the studio as well.

This is important. Everyone needs to show Sony that

all of you are interested in seeing this Blu-ray release.

Please do pass this along to other forums.

I will do my part.

Guys,

Keep us informed of what you do.

I can't figure out how to post on Sony's Facebook

page.  I don't think it is possible.

Mail may be the only option at this point.

I will get a very good contact address for all of

you within the next 24 hours.

Just need those of you who post on other forums

to spread the word that Sony needs to be contacted

in order for this Blu-ray to happen.  From what I know,

some really UNBELIEVABLE things can be done with

this release but only if Sony greenlights it.

If you want to wait a bit before spreading the word on

other forums I will try to get a good address to write to.

...it may help save the Post Office in the process.  smile.gif

I'm looking forward to this release and will be writing a letter but maybe Sony realizes that the average consumer already has access to 1776 on DVD and its only $7.49 at Amazon. many will just skip the BD and go for the cheaper and already available alternative. Many would probably find the DVD to be "Good Enough".

Sony is a lost cause. They won't license out the good stuff and they won't release it. Forget about this release ever coming out in any thing but the current DVD version (maybe Twilight or Image will license the film). If Twilight gets it at least we may get an isolated score.

Yet other popular catalog titles are appearing this year from other studios

Fox is releasing "The Poseidon Adventure" in April as a Walmart Exclusive (hint) write to Walmart or Best Buy to get your favorite film released on Blu-ray)  To Bad Amazon isn't doing Exclusives

Greg,

This is definitely the wrong message to put out there

considering the fact that I have a lot of inside information

concerning this release.

It is very possible that 1776 can be released in an

edition that fans will rejoice over.  Sony just needs to

be pushed to get it back on schedule.

What SONY could possible do: Give to Walmart as an exclusive : for the 4th of July.  Walmart tends to stock only 4 or 5 copies of a catalog exclusive, surely they could sell 5 copies per store if tied into the 4th of July (get a free flag with purchase)

After all what's more patriotic than Apple Pie, "1776" and the American flag.

I sent them a tweet requesting not only a deluxe Blu-Ray but also a proper release of the movie soundtrack.

If you find the proper address I will happily snail-mail them a request as well.

I'm new to this forum and late to this particular party, but I'll add my voice via Facebook and Twitter. 1776 has been one of my favorite shows since I saw it on Broadway, and I can't count how many times I've seen the movie. I paid what seemed like a fortune for the Pioneer LD, and it was worth every penny. And, like others, I was disappointed by the cuts made for the DVD, especially since Hunt never mentioned his thoughts about a final cut on the LD commentary. It's tough to argue with Hunt since it's his baby on stage and screen, but I prefer the LD presentation even though it's rough in places and has to be zoomed in to fill up my TV screen. I'd love to see it cleaned up and on BD.

Again, I'll add my voice to the chorus asking for the full boat on this film.

Hi Chris!

Welcome to the forum.  So glad you found your way here.

Hope you stay.

If you really want to help, please read this thread.

Send an email and snail mail letter to Sony.  It's important.

Plus, any site you know that has 1776 fans, please point them

to the link I gave you so they can write letters as well.

It's the only way, at this point, we have a chance of seeing

a proper release.

Welcome again!

Hi, Chris, and welcome. You know when they first came out with "colorizing films", I always thought it would be used for restoration of damaged films, not for turning B/W films into ugly color. It seems to me that colorizing those sepia toned workprint pieces would make them a tad less jarring.

There's actually only one brief section of a black and white work print, taking place after the intermission. The other restored sections on the LD are color, but they were old and faded, and digital restoration wasn't available at the time. Since they found good copies of the original elements when they made the DVD, they might have the rest of the 3-hour version in that stash. I'd pay good money for a BD of what the LD contains.
It's been a while since I watched the entire LD version. I remember the scene where Dr. Hall meets Caesar Rodney was monochrome. I figured it was left out of the DVD cut because they felt it would be to jarring.
