I speculate...and mark my word...this film is going to get
torn apart by reviewers this week.

It's an unwatchable mess.

'Nuff said.

A friend in Japan told me they walked out dumbfounded it was so bad ;(  Said RDJ was good in it, but it seemed like it had no sensible plot at all.  :(

Matt,

That would be very accurate.

Thread title needs changed.  :)  Here's a snippet of what was said:

"Everyone seemed shell shocked.  Like this should have been tagged onto the first film as an extended ending because it makes no sense on it's own.  Maybe the worst sequel to a super hero movie.. But X3 was awesome in comparison.  At least the idea there was interesting.  This had no idea what was going on.  Scarlett Johansen is smoking hot, as an upside"

It can't be that bad, Ron, can it?  Not after that first film...

It can be.  Judge for yourself.

Well, Friday just got interesting.  I thought this one was a sure bet...

My expectations for Iron Man2 were already low. It seemed  like they were rushing it after the first was a hit.

They should be concerned - especially as this is supposed to build anticipation for Avengers.
This is not at all what I wanted to hear.  I thought there was a good chance it wouldn't be as good as the first one, but it sounds like it is a lot worse.
That is really too bad.  I had high hopes for this.  The trailers looked pretty darn good (not that they are a good measure, but the trailer along with the strength of the first movie made it sound like a winner).

Any other reviews up?

Plenty:

It's still fresh.  The British press seems to like it.

Did anyone who saw it pick up on the Avengers tidbits thrown in the film?

No major spoilers.....
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
-Capt Americas shield
-Downey said Iron Man2 takes place at the same time as The Incredible Hulk. You can see a broadcast covering the campus mayhem from that film.
- I wont spoil the after credits scene, but it involves Thor

Ron,

I saw it last night.  You were almost right.  I wouldn't call it an unwatchable mess.  But, it's a mess.  And it's entirely in the second act...

Kevin Feige and company had their hands in the cookie jar on this film.

This film is a bridge film...the first ( in movie time) prequel to the Avengers.  Captain America will be the second.

One newspaper here, the News of the World, gave Furry Vengeance a higher rating than Iron Man 2.

A snippet from the review -

Quote:

Here's the thing about Iron Man 2. It's got everything you want from an Iron Man movie - great banter, top performances, stunning effects.

Problem is, that bit's about three minutes long and comes at the end of a stupefyingly dull two hours of everything you don't want from an Iron Man movie.

Ouch! The same reviewer gave the much less shiny, cheaper and more violent Kick-Ass top marks.

The critics are going to have a field day with this.

This appears to be a film bent on having fanbois love it, and all others scratch their heads.

matt,

Wouldn't go that far but at times, it does feel like that.  The first half set is actually quite great.  After the Monaco action sequence, it just goes down...for unknown reasons.  Then, right when you think this film has really gone off the rails, it comes back with a fairly dynamic climax that's better than all the action in the first film and all that's come before it to cap the film off.

The subplot with SHIELD/Howard Stark/and the "new element" is just lazy in its execution.  There was a much more efficient way to handle this whole deal...which is one of the problems of the second act but it stands out the most.

Cory,

I respectfully disagree.

Without spoiling anything I just felt that the first half
of the movie was very difficult go get through.  A huge
amount of inane dialogue and situations.  There is a
party scene at Stark's home that puts Ironman in a
VERY disturbing light that leads to a pointless confrontation.
(We can discuss that further after you guys see the film).

I realize that Robert Downey's character is obnoxious
by nature -- but in this film so much more so that you
really lose respect for his character.  He is way, way
over the top in this film and that's evident from the opening
scene.

Sam Rockwell's nerdy character is also disturbing to
watch at times.  It's like they stuck him in their for comedic
element but he's anything but funny to watch.  Even the
inclusion of Scarlett Johansson (who I would warmly welcome)

is...well....ho-hum.

This movie, in a word, is boring.  I just couldn't wait for it

to finish so I could go watch grass grow.

Obviously not everyone feels this way, so yes, there is

good amount of hope that some of you will like this movie.

Plus, if you read this and go in with low expectations you

are bound to like the film better than I did.

I really look forward to your opinions over the next few days.

Oh wait, though, as a comic book person, if they are working on making Stark into more of a jerk/really unlikable, that may be bordering on some of the best moments in the comic, when alcoholism really took down Tony Stark.

I mean, does it come across as just kind of a jerk, or really tilting toward a fall.  I'm just wondering if he's trying to bring up any "Demon in a Bottle" type feeling for the franchise.

Matt,

Now, see, this is where I am going to be
found at fault....

You hit a very good point here.

I don't read comics.  That doesn't mean I
don't appreciate comic book films.  I loved
the first Iron Man.

Yes, this film certainly does portray Stark
as an overly obnoxious individual who is
demonized by alcohol.  The one scene I talked
about in my prior post is very disturbing to watch.
For me, not knowing the comic book background,
I looked at it and thought "Jeez, why did they feel
they had to go down this road."

So, for fans of the comic book who know the
background of the character, you are more apt
to enjoy the film rather than from someone like
me who is sitting there wondering why they had
to make this film so dark at times.

Still, that being said, I felt that going down this
road could have been portrayed better so you
feel some sort of sympathy and understanding of
the character meltdowdown.  This is where the
movie fails miserably by mashing together incoherent
dialogue and action sequences against loud music.

matt,

Actually, from interviews I've read, this is all you're getting of "Demon In a Bottle."  But, it's very specific why he acts the way he acts.  I won't spoil but I actually bought it.  But, as Ron stated, RDJ and Favreau take it a bit too far...even though I like the sequence.  But, I can understand why audiences might not buy it.  It's very, very close to the emo Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 dance sequence...disturbingly close.  But again, this film is the only one that's going to tackle "Demon in a Bottle."

Ron,

I'm the exact opposite...funny enough.  I felt the middle is the main problem...without getting specific.  Again, it's just lazy in its handling.  Everything in the second act could've been handled much more efficiently.  And if it was, there could've been at least another action sequence that specific targets Tony's problem through out his narrative.

Plus, there are some logical gaps that should've been easily caught...something the first film mainly avoided.
The comparison to Spiderman3 just took my low expectations and brought them down even more... if that was possible.
Honestly, does Marvel make good movies anymore?
^ Were there that many good Marvel movies to begin with?  I'm not saying that they're all bad but besides Spider-Man 2 and X-Men 2, I don't think there's that many really good movies that came from Marvel's comics. To me, the bulk of them range from OK to forgettable.
Marvel had very little to do with the Spider-Man movies, and the X-Men movies. They sold the movie rights to the studios. The only movies Marvel Studios actually made are Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2.
Travis,

I would absolutely agree with that assessment about the Marvel films.  I'd add Ang Lee's Hulk as the third one.  Quite honestly, I think DC's done a better job with their films in terms of quality.  They may not have as many but, I count V for Vendetta (by way of Vertigo), Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and to a lesser extent Superman Returns better than anything Marvel's produced since Spider-Man 2, which was really their last great flick...
If youre gonna include V For Vendetta, you might as well include Stardust (which I havent seen) and History of Violence under DC as well.

Who did Wolverine?  That was some garbage.  Jackman was the only quality part of that movie because he can carry a film, and he had to with that thing.
Jon,

Knew about History of Violence but had no idea that Stardust was DC related.  Great flick.

I personally think that of the comic book films next year, Green Lantern is going to be the surprise hit.  That dude Martin Campbell is great.  I can't wait to see what he does with this...
