Box Office Weekend

No surprise to anyone that James Cameron’s AVATAR was the biggest box-office draw this past weekend taking in $73 million.  Though it didn’t break the record for the best December opening of all time, the film has already been deemed a success for the studio and its Director.

Check out photos from the Hollywood premier last Wednesday, read initial reviews, and check out general member discussion of the film.  If you have seen the film, we invite all of you to join in on the discussions.

Software Reviews

With our large team of reviewers covering the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases, we are making it very easy for you to pick the right title(s) for that perfect stocking stuffer gift.

If you are looking for the funniest movie this year, look no further than THE HANGOVER.  Ken McAlinden calls THE HANGOVER “a unique blend of mystery and vulgar bromantic comedy that proved irresistible to audiences, making it the surprise hit of the summer.” Cameron Yee calls it “an entertaining movie if not a memorable one.”  Read Cameron’s  Blu-ray review and Ken’s DVD review.

Quentin Tarantino’s latest (and arguably best) film, Inglourious Basterds, hit video shelves last week.  Neil Middlemiss calls it “a masterful accomplishment in entertainment and a glorious adventure in the power of dialogue” while Kevin Koster calls it “a solid film by Quentin Tarantino that mixes humor with sometimes unbearable intensity.”  Read Kevin’s Blu-ray review and Neil’s DVD review.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a gift that any fan of the series from J.K. Rowling will be happy to receive.  Read Cameron Yee’s Blu-ray review as well as Ken McAlinden’s DVD review.

If you are looking for something special for that special child, perhaps A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa is worth your consideration.  ReadTodd Erwin’s review and decide for yourself.

If there has been someone especially nice on your Christmas list this year, perhaps he or she is worthy of receiving The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray.  Call it the guaranteed most pleasing gift you could give any Mel Brooks fan.  In fact, you can read Matt Hough’s review here and see why.

So what kind of film do you think your wife or girlfriend will really enjoy receiving this holiday season?  That’s easy to answer.  Look no further than Julie & Julia starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.  Rich Gallagher gives a very positive review.  I saw this on an airplane this past week and can whole-heartedly recommend it for you guys as well.

When it comes time to gather the family around the home theater to watch something that everyone can get into, why not stick with the theme of Christmas? Four Christmases may be the ideal film to entertain everyone at your home.  Take a look at Michael Reuben’s Blu-ray review and Ken McAlinden’s DVD review.

Still not enough for holiday consideration? Take a look through our official review archive filled with thousands of Blu-ray and DVD titles.

Hardware Reviews

Keeping with our Holiday Special Edition theme, we realize that perhaps the most popular Christmas gift this year will be a Blu-ray player.  For the first time, Blu-ray players have dropped below the $100 mark.  Not that we would recommend those players to our members, but perhaps looking through these most popular forum threads you can come to your own conclusions as to which player will make the best holiday gift for yourself or that special person in your life.

If you are considering a new display to compliment that Blu-ray player you might find some helpful advice in these forum discussion threads…
