Burbank, Calif., April 14, 2010 – WHV is giving fans the opportunity to experience the man Entertainment Weekly named one of the “100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Time” in an adrenaline charged collection of films starring the unforgettable legend, Errol Flynn. Each film* will make its restored and remastered debut on DVD for the first time on August 3, 2010 in Turner Classic Movies Spotlight: Errol Flynn Adventures. Presented by Warner Home Video (WHV), the 5-disc set will include an arsenal of powerful films that celebrate the charismatic and legendary hero who became known to many as “The Baron.” Each disc boasts an impressive array of bonus content and rare footage, some never before available on DVD. The collection includes: Desperate Journey, also starring Ronald Reagan, Northern Pursuit, Edge of Darkness, Uncertain Glory, and Objective, Burma! (SRP $49.92).  

 

One of the greatest movie swashbucklers of the early sound period, Flynn was chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the “100 Sexiest Stars in Film History” in 1995 (issue #86). His debonair attitude and notorious off-screen life continues to make him one of the most compelling actors in Hollywood history. With a combination of natural athleticism and magnetic good looks, Flynn became one of the most popular and highly paid stars of the 1930s and 1940s, and his films continue to be sought after by fans around the world.

How can you lose with 4 Raoul Walsh films and a Lewis Milestone.  Two of my favorite directors of the era.

It would have been nice to see a little head shot of Walsh in the corner of the artwork with his eyepatch on.  That would probably intrigue people as much as anything.

I see there's a trailer for The Mask of Dimitrios included among the extras. If only that could make its way out onto pressed disc. Well, I can hope.

 Objective Burma is already available from WB. Strange they didn't make it a clean sweep of new to DVD releases.

I Know. I hate when studios do that. For instance: First they release "My Friend Flicka" then they release the sequel "Thunderhead, Son of Flicka" but for the final installment "The Green Grass of Wyoming" what do you think they go and do? It's only part of the box set "Flicka Family Classics Collection" with all three films. Suckers! If you want the last film you got to buy 'em all again!

We might not always agree with studios about using certain themes in trying to market a title or boxset, but it appears this boxset is being marketed as Flynn's WWII films and I can't think of another of such films that hasn't already been released beforehand. 

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but this release of "Objective Burma" has a commentary which I don't believe the previous two releases have on their disc.

Also, it's not like Warner is going to adjust the 49.95 MSRP down.:)

Has Warner reconsidered their policy regarding subtitles on catalog titles?  Spanish subs had been left a couple years ago, and seeing them again on a press note is something many hispanic people (both sides of the Atlantic) had been waiting for.

Or... may it just be a typo?  On the new Film Noir set they seem to be included too, great news if confirmed.  And please, a solid confirmation would be much appreciated.

So, the set was released today. Any reviews around? Mine shipped yesterday, with Sonys Kim Novak set, but it'll take at least 2-3 weeks before they arrive in Germany.

I actually got my boxset from Warner's site last Thursday, but haven't had time to look at any of the discs.

I've watched Desperate Journey, Edge of Darkness, and Objective, Burma! so far, and they all look excellent.

 

Also, being the first time I've seen them, I've found them to be all very nicely done war films, even if all three are different kinds of war films (Desperate Journey is definitely a good start for wartime adventure!)

 

As far as extras I particularly appreciated the rare wartime newsreel footage, and found a bit of a soft spot for those military orchestra shorts

 

Speaking of which, the press release is inaccurate. The Tanks Are Coming is not part of the "Warner Night at the Movies" on the "Desperate Journey" disc--it is its own separate special feature.  In its place is a military orchestra short much in the vein of the short The United States Service Bands the disc that has Edge of Darkness.
