Bought for Nostalgia

Well, lets talk about shows we purchased for nostalgic purposes - we remember watching it as a kid, another relatives favorite, thought it may be good, whatever - and after viewing it, turned out not to be so fantastic at all.

The first purchase that comes to my mind was TABITHA.

Saw it in a $3.99 bin at, I believe, Big Lots.  Always liked Lisa Hartman.  Remembered watching the pilot movie and the series as a kid.  Knew that it had only lasted for one season and then didn't return.

So I picked it up.

Watched the original pilot movie first.  Wow.  And that wasn't a good 'wow'

Then the series.  Slightly amusing.  My kids that like watching Bewitched reruns watched a couple of episodes but then gave up.

Even my kids were making suggestions for how the show could have been better and asking things like "How come we never see her mom and dad?", "I don't remember this aunt from Bewitched", "Where's Uncle Arthur?" and so forth.

What is your "Nostalgic Purchase"?

I've been fortuante as most of what I'd call "nostalgic" purchases have held up well for me.

One that didn't was "Yogi Bear".  The other one was "Space Ghost" (orig 60's).

However, I don't collect many animated series.

I've bought a lot of nostalgic sets but the rest have held up over time for me.

So much of my buying is for "nostalgia," that it's hard to be discerning. Perhaps a better reason would be for "sentimental" reasons. Like that's the show I missed when I had to go to church or traveling to visit my grandparents. By gum, didn't my grandparents know, their visits were interrupting my television shows.

And there wasn't an ABC affiiliate in the area--- just how did I survive?

Barbaric. . . It was simply barbaric. . . .

Some of you guys who lived in the big cities were just plain lucky.

Anyway.  . sometimes I'll buy a series because I had to miss an episode back than of a beloved show.

Man, that is barbaric :)  I  was lucky and grew up in the Dallas area where we had all of the major networks and a few independents for reruns.

I've bought a few sets for sentimental reasons as well.  All have held up well.  But I've become a very cautious TV/DVD buyer over that last 2 years, partly due to the economy and partly since I  already have a lot on the shelf not yet viewed.

I will buy anything for nostalgic purposes.  A child of the 80's G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Thundercats were heaven on earth.  To own them on dvd still blows my mind.

Discovering new classic shows through dvd is really cool though.  Star Trek the original series and MASH are just a couple of shows I own now that I really love.

Picked up Barnaby Jones last week.  Great show.

I recently did that with Groovie Goolies. I loved this series as a kid and remember not missing an episode. I put the DVD into the played getting myself ready for the fun... it was not as groovy as I had remembered. But if I had spent $40.00 on the set I would have forced myself to love it again!

you should always watch childhood favorites properly - either hopped up on sugar coated cereals or be blotto. Doesn't help to have an adult mind for kiddie programming.

I find myself picking up all the stuff I missed because my mother screamed, "You're not going to sit around all Saturday watching cartoons." Thus I nabbed most of the Filmation stuff that BCI put out.

I remember my Mom saying the same thing when I was watching "Jonny Quest, The Herculoids, Space Ghost, Shazzan.

So did I, as well as all those Gerry Anderson "Supermarionation" Series and as many Hanna-Barbera Shows I can get my grubby hands on. Quoting a Certain Advertisment:

The Thunderbirds are spectacular.  I own Jonny Quest and The Herculoids (complete) on DVD.  I watched Space Ghost as a child as well, and loved it.

So far I've been lucky.  The shows I recall not being too impressed with as a kid *still* don't impress me much, many of which others consider to be "classics", and the stuff I *loved* is still great!  I have a couple I'm on the fence about considering how they were produced and the age at which I initially saw them as young eyes tend to not t see the flaws/low production values as much.  Those, while I remember loving them, are very likely going to be a bit of a disappointment once I finally pick them up.  I guess I'm waiting because I don't want to be disappointed.
