Audio advertisements

Thread Starter
I was just over at the Lost Season 6 and then the 24 forums and an advertisement started singing at me.  This is beyond annoying.  I can mute the volume, but then I can't listen to anything else when on the HTF.

Yes the Mevio audio has raised its ugly head again. This time around though the player mute button works, sort off. After a few minutes it starts blasting again. I guess the admins don't want us lingering on the forums for more than a couple of minutes.

Seems like it kept crashing Firefox, too.  The first two times I attempted to open the forum tonight, that audio thing started up and the browser crashed. When I came back the third time, the audio ad was gone and everything seems fine.

It's definitely irritating to open a page and have the audio start blasting at you (especially inconvenient if you're trying to read while at work).

The default should be audio off. Let those who want to watch it choose to turn it on.

In 1998 it was almost universally known that annoying sounds was a bad idea if you wanted visitors to return to your website (yes, I used to develop websites).  Why is it in 2010 we still have this nonsense?
Because of the separation between content/ownership and sales.

Sales guys take the money, if shit goes haywire it's not their problem, they got targets to meet.

I was a the very bottom of a thread when this sound started assaulting me. It took clicking around to several other open tabs before I scrolled up to discover it was an add here on HTF. I can't tell you how pissed I was!

Using HTF has become more and more undesirable. Its getting to the point where I will just stop coming here. But perhaps that is the goal.

Hey, sorry about the audio ads - we are very clear with ad networks that audio ads which are not user-initiated cannot run on HTF.

However when we start with a new network, they have sometimes missed this detail and the result is a couple of "bad" ad creatives that aren't controlled by this restriction and play sound.

PLEASE send me a PM with a screenshot OR description of the advertiser.  This way I can track down the network and make sure they don't send that particular ad or any like it in the future.

Thanks for your understanding on this; it's much more important that Home Theater Forum works well for our members than it is to earn the additional revenue from audio ads.  That's why we're VERY clear that these ads are banned on the forums even though they pay more, and take the time to track them down and get them off the site.  This priority is also why we only have four ad units total on our pages unlike some of our competitor sites, which have many many more.  The intrusive ads you're seeing are a mistake and I appreciate members' help in correcting this.

Adam:

I attached screen shots of some of the offending ads in THIS THREAD... about two weeks ago.

And in THIS THREAD, too.   [For some reason the images aren't displaying in my post that second thread.  But when I "quoted" the post, the clickable links appear and you can click on them to see the images. ]

I certainly hope that's a help.

The're BAAAAACKKKK....

Yes they are.

These appear to be different from the Vimeo ads.

Working on it guys.  I just sent a complaint.

A lot of these problems, unfortunately, are out of owner's hands.

Should be fixed in a few hours.

Well this was a bit different.  I just opened the Survivor thread and was bombarded by--not one...but--TWO of the same video ads on the same page at the same time.  One was at the top of the right-hand column.  The other was at the bottom of the right-hand column.  It was cacaphonous!

I couldn't fit them both in the screen cap.  They were too far apart on the page:

Yes!  I ran into the same thing, one apparently for Clorox and the other for some diamond starting thing.. jeez!  This need to NOT START automatically!!  It's a great way to have everyone in an office spin around.  If they do start automatically, they need to be on "Mute" by default, as many other sites do.  And 2 at once means you can't understand either one at all.

 "for sparkling dishes that shine"....

For pete's sake....I really enjoyed (& frequented) HTF much more before the "redesign" and audio ads really are another reason to stay away.

Hah, now it's in this thread and in the root forum menu.. one is for dishwasher detergent and the other for room deodorizer apparently.

Does my office stink that bad?

Oh now when I open up two windows in two tabs, I now have four audio ads at once:

Toilet Cleaner
Dishwasher
Room deodorizer
Blastro games or something.

MAKE IT STOP.. OH THE HUMANITY!

Hey guys,

I just talked to our ad ops guy.  The ad network serving those ads had told us that they wouldn't send us any more audio ads, but that clearly isn't the case.  We're going to completely remove that ad network from the rotation, so that will hopefully prevent them from appearing permanently.  They should be gone soon if they aren't already.  Let us know if you see any more.

5:01 central, just got the "Ericson Eye Motion" room deodorizer and Clorox.. in this thread of all things :)

Hopefully gone by tonight, because now they are in every thread I visit :(

EDIT: And everytime I submit a reply, the ads re-start :(

WHAT THE F**K!???!!

Here I was reading about a Bob Hope Box set when the HTF started yelling at me about bleach for my f**king toilets???!?!?  This is why I don't watch TV.  Let me know when the toilet ad is gone and the HTF institutes a ban on audio advertising.

Seriously, I am as furious as that emoticon looks about this.  The wonky reply is bad enough, but I'm not going to not listen to music while I surf the net just to escape advertising.

7:20 central.  The ionizer deodorizer ad still showing up in threads.   (not here, but just caught it in the iphone thread)

Jeezus!  I agree with the above, this is freaking terrible... trumpcards most other concerns..

Just a minute ago, I had this "Take A Survey" ad pop up while I was navigating from one page to another within the HTF.

I gave up.  I have never done this in the past.  Because I recongize HTF needs the $, I never adblock their content.  (I have it in the "excepted") but I turned it on today after I got a "Take a Minute"  pop up ;(  Just too much.  Let me know when it's sorted out.  I recognize that this forum needs the ad revenues.  I'm hoping there is some middle ground where I don't feel like a jerk for blocking ads.

Guys, you are losing members.  Either fire your ad network or the people working it.
And, I hate to say it, but I just got another audio ad for something called "Jet Dri" when I just paid a visit to--of all places--Sam's Profile page!

Oh, the irony!
AirWick AutoMist for me. I don't blame the HTF, since these obnoxious sort of ads are starting to pop up everywhere. You'd think the ad groups would get the message when so many sites dump them shortly after adding audio ads, but apparently not.
I wasn't fast enough to grab a screen capture a few minutes ago when I was at Sam's Profile Page...but it turned out I didn't have to wait long for the Jet Dri ad to show up again.

This is just beyond ridiculous.  Nearly every thread I visit tonight I'm hit with the annoying audio ads.  And oftentimes (as mentioned above) it's TWO ads on same page at the same time-- and out of sync-- making it even more annoying (if that's possible).

On top of that, I can find no way to mute the damn things.

I really hope HTF can regain its glory, but I seriously have my doubts anymore.  HTF used to be the first stop (and often only stop) for my home theater/movie needs (and to just enjoy a good conversation).  But more often than not, I find it easier and more pleasant to visit other sites.  It's a shame, really.  I'll make the random visit now and then, just out of curiosity. But HTF just isn't going to be a regular stop anymore.

Here's a two-fer...if I can get the screen capture to show up (I am having more and more problems with that lately).

I just got an audio ad AND one of those ugly yellow teeth banner ads:
