It's pretty much old news by now, but here's Iwata's letter (translated by . . . somebody):
Quote:
To Those Customers Who Bought A Nintendo 3DS Before The Price Change

Greetings, everyone. This is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo.

Thank you very much for purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.

We have just announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3DS system effective on August 11 [August 12 in North America].

In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release.

We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision.

This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future.

If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system.

Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us. We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early. Still, we would like to offer the following as a sign of our appreciation to you.

[3DS Ambassador program details]

We feel a strong responsibility to develop the 3DS as a platform -- to ensure that, in the end, everyone is satisfied; we will make every effort to do so.

Additionally, we know everyone is waiting for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. They are scheduled for release in November and December, respectively, so we ask for your patience until then.

Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

Personally, I think Iwata is pretty awesome.

Word is Walmart is going to honor the new price on the 9th, so you could go buy it that day AND get the free games if you register it fast. YMMV.

Interesting.

I wonder if there'll be any good Black Friday 3DS deals.

Even better, if you buy a 3DS at Best Buy and then show them the Walmart price, I believe they will match 110% of the difference. So instead of $170 you would get it for $162. Not a whole lot of money saved but it could basically cancel out sales tax.

Shut up, you guys!!!

FYI, Costco is selling a 3DS bundle for $179.99 that comes with a case, screen protectors, and a car charger.

And word is that the Ambassador program is extended to the 30th too, but i cannot link that from here.

Fortunately, it's not that people can buy them at the lower price and still get the games. That wouldn't be fair, now would it? In Australia only at this point, you can provide proof until Sept. 30 that you purchased the system before August 12 if you failed to connect to the eShop before the deadline.

I believe that it's open to all.

I'd like to see your link, because that hasn't made the 3DS news sites I visit yet (mainly, IGN and Nintendo World Report). My scenario has been discussed at Gizmodo and G4:

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/715406/nintendo-3ds-ambassador-program-reportedly-extended-through-sep-30/

If you are right, that would be a pretty big fuck you to early adopters. I've supported the price drop to ensure the life of the system, but if people reaping the benefits of the lower price can also have the games . . . what a betrayal.

Will post it later, was on QuarterToThree. Perhaps I simply misread something tho.
Yeah, you have to have bought the 3DS before Aug. 12th to get the free games. The point is that you had to pay the higher price, so you get the games. Even though that's not always the case.

OK, my bad, sorry.

The new phonebooks are here! The new phonebooks are here! Ambassador games a day early. You have to go into Settings, Your Downloads, and "redownload" each title.

Maybe a trip to Panera for lunch is in order then!

I downloaded the 10 games available and, frankly, only the Mario/Zelda/Metroid ones are worth having. Oh well, at least they were free and the GBA games coming down the line will be excellent.

The funny thing is, those have kind of run their course for me. I was having more fun with Mario than I expected, though. It's kind of like not feeling like watching an old TV favorite and then enjoying it when I do. For me, the most fun has been DKjr and Balloon Fight. BF is not as fun as Joust, but it's the same kind of thing. And, I was surprised how close DKjr was to the arcade version. The last I owned was on the Coleco. I'm currently really into Mario golf, so I'm looking forward to trying that one. I hope they'll announce the Final Five soon, because if GBA Mario Golf isn't one of them, I want to buy it.

There was a rumor a while back that Ninty was fixin' to announce a second circle pad for the 3DS. Rumor no more!

700

I've been playing a lot of Mario Kart DS lately, and the part of my palm by the thumb really starts to hurt because of how small the system is. I was thinking of getting an aftermarket grip, but this peripheral may accomplish the same thing.

A second part of the rumor from the same source was that the main point of the price drop was to sell off inventory, as the 3DS is already being phased out by Nintendo. They were right about this, they were right about the Wii U. I hope they're off their rocker on this one.

Edit: Apparently, this is being offered as an addon specifically for Monster Hunter 3DS. Some are comparing it to the DS Guitar Hero addon. So, it might not become a standard control. As we've seen before, most of these addons aren't supported since game companies fear making a game with a part that most players might not have.

Another part of the rumor was that Nintendo would sell this for a dirt cheap price (like $10) to make it easy for people to buy, then release a new 3DS hardware that had dual analog sticks and focused on games rather than the ability to play 3D. Since this peripheral would be cheap, people who own a 3DS would be willing to buy it and ensure that future games could use both sticks on the new hardware and current owners.

It just looks really ugly. The 3DS can be uncomfortable to hold for a long amount of time because it's small and has rather squared edges, but this just looks ridiculous.

At this point, I'm just hoping Paper Mario makes it out of the gate before the 3DS dies. At this point, there are some terrific games on deck and an uncertain future.

Nothing in the world can drag me away from the soft glow of this electric sex gleaming from my 3DS:

yum.gif

When Mario is throwing fireballs, it sounds like Daisy says, "Oh, shit!"

I've finally found the full Paper Mario trailer, but I'm going to have to watch it later. This computer can barely handle videos and I don't want it ruined with jerkiness.

I can't hold off any longer. I'm picking one of these up pronto. I played the demo of Mario Land, and that was it.

I don't know if the 3DS will last very much longer, but I don't care. Christmas shopping a few weeks ago(in many, many different stores) I noticed you could get a 3DS anywhere, and there wasn't one or two of them left, more like 20-30. Not a good indicator. I remember way back to the original launch of the DS. Around Christmas time you couldn't find one at a store anywhere. Well for what it's worth come payday, I will own one.

It's actually doing well now. It's sold four million units in the US alone, with 3D Land and Kart 7 selling over a million units each in a month. Plus, the 3DShop has really come into its own. The upcoming games lineup looks great, so I think it's a pretty good buy now.

The upcoming games lineup is still anemic and I've never seen so much $40 shovelware for a system in my life. A lot of 3ds games are so bad, they don't even get reviewed by gaming sites. Ever hear of jaws:ultimate predator? Neither had I until I saw it in a rack at EB.

I've owned a 3ds since launch, but I've stopped buying games for it after Zelda, except for Super Mario Land, which truth be told doesn't hold a candle to the superlative mario galaxy games. The eshop is an utter joke, its like it was designed as a class project by a bunch of 8 year olds. Does nintendo actually expect people to buy games without any demos whatsoever. Its just pathetic. The company is utterly clueless in the online space.

Resident evil revelations is going to be $50. 50 bucks for a low res version of a series that peaked at RE4. Yeah, I'm really going to be frightened by what's going on in a 3.5inch screen and those tiny speakers. MGS3 for the 3ds, $40. I can get the HD collection for my ps3 or xbox 360 for the same $40. And that's three games in 720p. Somebody's doing drugs here, and it isn't me.

Nintendo needs to get off their high horse and quit being so arrogant. I can't believe they're still charging $40 for launch titles like Nintendogs and Cats, Pilotwings Resort and the tech demo masquerading as a game, Steel Diver. That was the worst launch lineup ever, hands down. I'm a sucker for new tech, so I can't blame anyone but myself for buying a launch unit. The best thing about the 3ds for me are the ten gba games I downloaded via the ambassador program. I'll take those 10 games and pit them against the 3ds library anyday. Man, back when nintendo actually cared about making games, and weren't into gimmicks.

I just picked up a 3DS, along with Mario Kart 7, and 3-D pinball.
I'm having a blast with Mario Kart, its so much fun! The Pinball game is a collection of classics like Black Knight, Gorgar, Pinbot etc. A little small for the text on each table, but its still a really good pinball emulator. GEtting used to the 3-d aspect of the system. tilting it slightly one way or another cans seriously impare the picture. I'm learning to hold the system a little more stable.

Lots of fun, I'm so glad I own one now.
Sounds like the pinball is a port of the existing Williams game (I have the PS3 edition). It's a great package.

I agree 100% with Peter that $40-$50 is insane for handheld games. Cartridge prices are a big reason why the last handheld I bought was an original GBA.
I was reading an article about the price of games at various points since the Atari and it looked like the price in handheld game cartridges hasn't changed much. The GB games were not much cheaper than the ones now, and that's 20 years ago. I don't think the price is a big deal so long as the games are good.
