PR: McCloud Season 1 - Australian Release

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Just wanted to share that Madman Entertainment will be releasing the first season of McCloud in Australia/New Zealand using the original 6 x 50 minute episodic versions, as opposed to the 3 re-cut TV movies created in the mid 70s.

Along with the pilot episode (Portrait Of A Dead Girl) the 6 episodes will be included as originally broadcast:
WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T MAKE FRIENDS IN NEW YORK CITY
HORSE STEALING ON FIFTH AVENUE
THE CONCRETE CORRAL
THE STAGE IS ALL THE WORLD
WALK IN THE DARK
OUR MAN IN PARIS

And to complete the package, the 3 re-cut versions are included as a bonus:
MAN FROM TAOS, MANHATTAN MANHUNT and MURDER ARENA

It took over a year to find the original prints and it literally came down to the very last moment for their potential inclusion, so we are thrilled to finally present the series as originally produced.

You can find more info here:

along with Madman's same-day releases of McMILLAN & WIFE (Season 1) and BANACEK (Season 1)

Oh, how I wish Universal had never released the S1 set in R1 in 2005!

I ordered this when it was released, got it Thursday due to it being out of stock for a while, and it was missing 2 of the 3 dvds! I contacted the company I ordered it from, DevoteD DVD. I'm hoping they send me a replacement set as I have no real desire to mail it back to Australia but will if I have to.

I´d like to know whether the Australien release has English subtitles?

How is the picture quality in comparison to the US-box???

You´re a clever boy:-)

Thank you for telling me....

But I´ll explain it to you.....

I´m German and I sometimes prefer to see an American series with English subtitles......-did you understand that?

To answer your question: there are no subtitles (english or otherwise) on this set, sorry. Great set otherwise though!

I see they have also releases season 2 of McCloud as well.

Should be interesting to see what Madman does next with this great show, hopefully continuing now that both season 3 and season 4 are coming out in certain European region 2 territories in February, where it's only been the longer movie region 1 versions thus far by the way.

In which European territories will Season 3+4 be released?

The region 2 release date seems to be February 15 and it's all 10 stories, I have managed to discover the place of DVD debut so far is apparently limited to Scandinavia only.

Season 3 has an Australian release date of March 16th, from the good folks at Madman again.

Thanks HenryDuBrow for the information.

Do you know a link where I can pre-order Season 3 in Australia?

The Madman link is here

Henry, thanks for the update on McCloud.  I have the R1 S1/2 set but am looking into these R4 sets.  As of this posting, the AU/US exchange rate looks good for me.   EZDVD has the McCloud sets at $39.97 AU = $39.86 US.

Jack,

I'm not sure I understood the OP's post about the difference between the R1 S1/2 release and the Madman S1 (and S2?) releases.

When Grant said that the Madman sets contain the original 6x50 episodic versions vs the "re-cut" TV Movies, does that mean that the Madman sets contain footage that was removed from the R1 set versions or is he referring to the re-editing/combining of the episodes into "TV-Movie" format with all of the original scenes intact, just combined?

The point is that the re-edited movies of the S1 episodes that combined two 60 minute episodes into one 90 minute episode removes and rearranges many scenes to turn things into total incoherence.     In short, you're not getting all of the footage originally shot for S1 when you see these re-edited 90 minute versions (an unbilled cameo of Doug McClure in fact is totally lost as a result of this in one episode).     The Madman set lets you see the episodes as they were originally intended AND provide the alternate recuts whereas the R1 release has just the recut 90 minute versions.

Does the MadMan version have the original NBC Mystery opening with the great Henry Mancini theme?  If that's the case I might consider buying it from Australia.

Gary "I hate that Uni never used that theme on any of their releases - unless there's one I'm not aware of" O.

It's not on S1 because the theme wasn't part of S1.

The real irony is that the one time the theme has been used on a release it was used INCORRECTLY!   (The Ellery Queen pilot credits).

I knew it wouldn't be on the S1 release because it wasn't used then.  I was asking about S2.  And yes, you are correct about the Ellery Queen pilot using the theme (which was indeed very strange).

Gary "so the correct theme isn't on the S2 Madman release?" O.

McCloud was aired in NBC's Four in One "wheel" in its first season. Was there a separate Four in One main title, à la The NBC Mystery Movie sequence that featured the man with the flashlight and the Mancini theme?

McCloud is really picking up speed in Europe now, season 5 rides out there in April at the same regional place as mentioned for seasons 3 & 4, this probably means Madman in Australia shouldn't be far behind either I'm sure.

I just want to remind you that Season 4 of "McCloud" has been released in Australia.

I´ll order Season 1-4 shortly though I have the Code 1 DVD´s of Season 1+2 but I don´t want "cut" episodes.

It´s strange that Universal will release "McCloud" in Australia and not in the USA anymore, so it seems that the selling numbers in Australia are much higher than in the USA.

Thanks for the info.  I also have the lone R1 release but am considering getting all of these sets from one of the Australia online stores.

As for lack of furthrer R1 releaes, it could be an issue with clearance rights within the R1 region.   Sales also could be a reason, hard to say without inside contacts at Universal.
