How do you store your movie collection?

I didn't know where else to put this so I just figured it was a "general question."

Anyways, I was just wondering what the rest of you do to store your movie collection?

I currently use a 1000 DVD storage case and try to catalog it using an excel spreadsheet. My problem is cataloging and organizing can be quite time consuming as I currently have roughly 650 movies.

I know there are "mega" dvd changers and such but they are usually limited to only 400 disks and can be quite expensive. Does anybody know of any automated dvd storage devices for say $300 and under? or any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I built custom storage racks.  I purchased DVD Profiler and created stickers with numbers that correspond to the catalog number in DVD Profiler and placed them on the spine of each movie.  Then when I want a movie, I look it up (either online, via the app, or use an index report next to the rack).

This beats trying to keep them in some order.

I just tried DVD Profiler after you mention it. It's a pretty good program so far, took awhile to enter all the movies but well worth it.

For the time being looks like thats the best solution until mega changers become bigger and more affordable, if ever...

I would say but it may violate forum rules.

I have two small children (one autistic).  My real media are absolutely nowhere to be found anywhere near our living rooms.  I just generally store the real discs  in our attic a few hours after I have them in my possession.  It's Simple On the other hand to keep the media out of my kids hand and still enjoy the blueray experience, so I'm happy with that.

Right now, since our attic is treated and does have climate controls, I know everything that is stored up there in good boxes will be in great shape whenever I decide to break out the media.

I just have mine on several shelving units, arranged in alphabetical order. That way, I have no trouble finding what I want. I have over 1000 dvds, but won't be buying many more, since going to blu ray. I used to use Profiler for years (when it was free), but when they started charging for it, it wasn't worth what they charged, to me anyway.

My HT has a "closet" area.  Many years ago it was used to store hardware.  That room has always (as in, since the late 60s or early 70s) been a media room and the closet (basically like any normal closet, with double louvered doors) has been somewhat inefficient storage for media for the last several years.  I'm finally fully converting it to be solely to store media.  It is about 7' wide and will probably have 11 shelves, going from floor to ceiling and side to side, to hold all the DVDs, CDs and whatever else needs to go in there.  I just use a very simple system, like Ed, but a bit expanded.  CDs are all together, alphabetically by artist or composer.  I have a lot of large Classical box sets (with anywhere up to 170 discs in each) and they are stored separately by Composer.  Movie DVDs are together by title, though I do put a few large series' together under the main name (such as "Bond").  TV shows are separate, also alphabetized and finally High Res Audio (SACD, DVD-A) separate by artist or Composer.

All the music will be available on the whole house music server.  Most of it is now, but I have as many as a thousand more CDs to add.  Still, I like the formality of taking and physically playing a disc at times, plus then I know I am getting maximum sound quality.

Years ago I used to keep computerized lists, but in the end I think they are just too much of a pain.  So long as I can find what I want, I am happy and I don't like the work involved with anything more elaborate.

It's Simple Only if you have to have the disc space to store everything.

I gave up trying to keep everything in alphabetical order.  I found catalog numbers to be much easier to maintain.  When a movie is removed it is simple to put back.  It does make it more difficult to find movies, but no more difficult than finding a book in a library.

It's just so cheap anymore... my WHS is now 18T.  (is that code enough), and I never worry about having full on hand or losing anything.

(you know, now that Microsoft openly advertises this feature, it's a real fine line between what's "OK" to say and not..)

Anyway, there is just no way in heck I'd put discs anywhere where a kid could ever get access it.  And I can store 20 full discs for the cost of 3.  And it prevents the destruction of any 1.  :)

We bought a really nice drawer Cabinet from IKEA and DVD drawer liners...   but mind you our collection is ALOT smaller then most here (probably)

I'm not sure how mine are stored. You'll have to ask Netflix.

I have maybe 75 cd's stored in a rotating, lighted and moterized cd storage thingy my brother bought me for X-Mas a few years ago. It came from the Sharper Image and actually works quite well. Push a button and wait for the cd I want to come around.

I also bought an un-finished solid wood storage cabinet that holds the maybe 100 dvd's, 50 DVD-A's and SACD's and 20 BluRay discs I have. Pretty lame amount compared to most of you   . Looks like I mostly collect the hardware, not the software  .

Andrew, Welcome to Home Theater Forum.  I don't bother with changers since its much easier to pull them off the shelf and watch them in another room then pull them out of the changer.  I use DVD Profiler too.  Its a great program.  The $20ish I spent 7 years ago for it was well worth it, especially since it helps me keep track of titles I have loaned out.  Currently I have 8 or 9 Ikea DVD storage wall racks that they no longer make.  In my old house I had commercial slat-wall and metal shelves that worked very well and were inexpensive.  I organize by collection alphabetically by genre for DVD, and just alphabetically for HD (Blu-ray and HD DVD).  I am trying to figure out if it is time to mix Blu-ray and DVD together or not as my Blu-ray collection has really grown.  Matt your discretion is appreciated.

I need to see a picture of that!  Mine is only 3 or 4.  I am using Win7 media center as my TV solution.  I have 3 Verizon cable card tuners on it and have an extender at every TV location.  I have a 1.5 TB drive on it for DVR use, and I use the WHS for overflow.  I need to figure out a better storage solution.

I have an Unraid Server with about 6TB of drive space.  All my movies are stored on my server (hope that's ok to say that here) I have my My Movies 3 on my laptop.  When I want to watch a movie, I just plug my laptop into my Receiver via HDMI which outputs to my TV via HDMI.  Bring up Windows Media Center browse to a movie I want to watch and click play.  I can watch standard dvd wirelessly from my Unraid server but blu ray requires a wired connection.  Works flawlessly.
