New Room, need in wall/ceiling speaker recomendations

Hi Everyone,

Seems like a pretty good forum you guys have here.  I have a couple of questions regarding speaker selection.

New construction, framing done almost ready for drywall.  14x20.  The bummer is that the CFO is making me compromise on a few things.....window.....and in ceiling speakers.
current system:
Marantz SR5003 AVR
5.1 Infinity TS 750 speakers

1.  I am from Portland Oregon....can anyone recommend a good HT store that has a selection of in ceiling speakers that I can hear first hand?

2.    To keep the CFO happy I need in ceiling speakers.  What recomendations do you guys have for speakers that will work well with my AVR.  I have a 1k budget for these and I would like to go 7.1.  What should I consider in this price range?  The front and center speaker do not have to be in ceiling, just the  4 surround speakers.

3.  Is it okay to have the rear surrounds in wall and the L/R surrounds in ceiling?  This configuration is okay with the wife.  The L/R surrounds need to be in ceiling though.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts....

If one set of surrounds must be in-ceiling, I'd put them all in-ceiling so that the sound is similar.  Better yet, just go 5.1 and use in-walls for the surrounds.

I suggest the Dayton line of speakers from Parts Express.  No you can't hear them first hand but they are great sounding and a great value.

I've had good experience with Proficient brand in-ceiling speakers.  They only sell through installers/builders.  Mine sound terrific.  Not cheap by any means, but not super expensive either.  I'd recommend avoiding Parts Express for in-wall and in-ceiling speakers.  Their speakers are good and their range is fine, but they are very expensive for what you get.  You can very easily do better elsewhere for the money.  http://www.proficientaudio.com/

Mixing in-ceiling and in-walls like you are suggesting probably will give you a fantastic rear soundfield.  I'm using Proficient in-ceilings for the rears in a 5.1 system in my bedroom are very nice.

I've had great luck with the HTD (www.htd.com) HD and MP in-wall/ceiling speakers. Heard 3 different systems and they all sound great! Set you back about $700 for the entire 7.1 system for the 8" speakers, but if you have a nice sub, the 6.5's would be fine, costing you only $500. I have them in my house and love them. They also provide a 30 day in-home trial and will pay for your return shipping should you decide you don't like them.
