Redbox is going to start renting Blu-rays

Thread Starter
According to Consumer Electronics Daily Redbox is going to start renting Blu-rays.  They expect that 10-15% of the rental discs available per kiosk will be Blu-ray and are estimating that they will rent for $1.50/day.  It will be rolled by July.

Great news. Alternative sources for high def are always welcome.

Good news indeed
I thought they already were, just in select areas. So the news is that now this is going national?

I get a laugh watching people stand in line, in the cold rain, just to rent or return a disc!

All for renting a disc for a buck! I must be to old to "get it".

I still have my pride, NetFlix will do me just fine.

Almost all of the Redbox kiosks in my area are inside grocery stores. I've never seen a line at one of them, and rain of course isn't a factor.

Most of the ones in my area are outside of Walgreens Pharmacy. I see a line of 2 or 3 people, usually waiting on someone that doesnt know how to work the thing, or cannot decide what to watch.

RedBox is a good idea for those on a budget, but the kiosks are necessarily limited in the number of titles available at any one time. If you arrive early on a Tuesday you haved a fair chance of grabbing a new release; otherwise, you might wait weeks, and Netflix becomes the better option. I don't rent Blu-rays personally, I only purchase them.

We have a Redbox Kiosk at Walgreens and two at Stop and Shop less than a mile from my house. $1.50 for Blu-ray is a lot cheaper than Blockbuster.

You know every time I go to Redbox as I approach the machine all of a sudden it's starts pouring with rain and people from out of nowhere jump in front of me and form a line at the machine.

You stick with your Netflix and while you're waiting for your movie to arrive I've seen it and moved on. In fact Redbox is the quickest way to get most movies as the boxes are stocked a few days before the Tuesday release day and the are available at midnight on Monday.

you can reserve a title online with redbox

Oh i do enjoy me NetFlix, thank you, now you enjoy your DRIVE to that little red box for your next film, and i will be sitting watching a movie that was sent to my house.

But really...

Your telling me you have never seen people waiting on a Friday night for their chance to get a movie from Redbox? And where i live, its Spring, so yea, its been raining, and cold!

Have a good day!

Where I live all the Redbox machines are inside the WalMart Superstores.  In fact, there's one about a half-mile from my house.  Since they're going to have Blu-rays now, and you can reserve your discs on-line, I may never go to a video store again!  (That's a joke:  The last video store in the area shut down about two weeks ago ...)

This is great news.  I only buy BDs currently (and borrow DVDs from the library), but for $1.50 I'll rent.  There's a Walmart on practically every other block around here, with a Redbox kiosk inside.  Very convenient.

I didn't know about the online reservations.  Even better!

Well if I was a shut in and never left my house then yeah driving the quarter mile to the Redbox inside Walmart or the one across the road in the HEB grocery store would be a huge bind. Fortunately I'm not a shut in. In fact I make frequent visits to both these stores multiple times in one week as well as other places like fast food joints right next door and stopping at the Redbox on my way out takes hardly any effort at all.

Whether there are more people waiting in line on a Friday night I wouldn't know. I rent most of mine at midnight on Monday when the new releases become available.

you have a good day too

Only a few "select" Redboxes inside Walmarts have been renting Blu-Rays.

^ Isn't that what I said?

LOL! That is funny, Robin. Yeah --- I have plenty of Redboxes in my area, and not once have I ever seen ANYONE in front of one of them, let alone some kind of "line" forming. And it's never rained! These boxes in my area are either in grocery stores or under awnings of 7-Eleven's where they never get wet.

Where I live there are several outdoor Redboxes that I am aware of and yes - I have seen lines of people standing in the rain (I have been one of them).  I don't know why this is such upsetting news for some of you. I try to stick with the indoor Redboxes when it is convenient.   I love the Redbox and I love Netflix - isn't there something more worthwhile to argue about?

Lately, the lines at the Redbox, both indoors and out, have been at least 3-4 people deep where I live.  It is annoying.

Lines? What Lines? I don't see no stinking lines!

I sometimes see them at the Stop and Shop but it has two Kiosks so mostly no lines. I never see any lines at the Walgreen's
post #21 of 29
I always reserve online so I don't need to stand at the machine too long and I always know that the title I want is available.

All the kiosks around here are inside supermarkets, too, so weather isn't an issue.

I hope they make it very obvious on the kiosk screen and online which are BR and which are not, or they'll have some angry customers who cannot play their rental discs.

I only have 1 Redbox close to me. I was just making an observation that seems to really have ticked off a few Redbox fans ( or maybe its because i am not a fan?).

Good to know i am not the only one who has weather!

Or, maybe it's because you made it clear how much better you think you are than Redbox users, and told us how much you enjoy laughing at our expense.  Can you really not figure out how that might have bothered some people?

Or it could be i do not understand the human condition, the need to stand in the rain just to save a buck. Just like i do not understand how a smoker can stand in the rain for a cigarette fix.

I also do not understand why people have to have it NOW! I read posts on the Internet about people freaking out cause of a 30 day wait for movies to go rental. Remember when it used to be the other way around?

Just an observation that makes me chuckle a little on the inside. I do not put much thought into it, or i had not until this thread.

Obviously Redbox makes money, big money, as the studios feel they are being undermined.

And that will be my last word...i am done!

Question, as someone who's never used a Redbox before: do you have to return the discs to the same box, or can you return them to any Redbox?
You can return them to any Redbox.  Another nice feature is you can go to their website and review all the Redboxes in your zip code, see what they actually contain and reserve the movie of your choice with a credit card.  Then it is a leisurely stop while you are out doing chores and voila!
I've never tried Redbox, but if they had a decent selection of BD films available, I would definitely consider it. We only rent a couple of movies a month (and some months none at all), so paying for a Netflix subscription doesn't make much sense. We have just been renting from the local Blockbuster, but according to Redbox's website they have a kiosk in the Kroger grocery store right next to our local Blockbuster.
This is welcome news to me.  I rarely rent, but it's nice to have the option.  My local Hollywood Video and Blockbuster closed.  I checked, and there are 3 Redbox locations less than two miles from me, including one at the supermarket we frequent.  Can't get much more convenient than that.

Redbox really made money when Walmart was selling titles for $10 during the Xmas rush. in less than 2 weeks, they had profit on a Star Trek DVD
