So I spoke with James Cameron tonight....

James Cameron was at the launch event for Samsung's new 3D TV lineup.  They had the Black Eyed Peas perform in Time Square and he was there to film it in 3D.  After the show I had the opportunity to ask him now that Avatar was finally finished if Home Theater Forum members could expect to finally see True Lies and The Abyss on Blu-ray.  He told me that he had three projects he was working on this year: converting Titanic to 3D, bringing True Lies and the Abyss to Blu-ray.

Keep in mind that is not a promise that we can have a James Cameron True Lies/Abyss double feature at my house by New Years Eve, but at least its a high priority on his to-do list and confirmation that those titles are going to be hitting the production pipeline sometime this year.  As to Titanic I didn't get if the 3D conversion was for a theatrical release, home video or both, although I imagine if they were going to the expense of doing it that they would do some sort of theatrical 3D release.

Does this "converting Titanic to 3D" mean it will be on Blu-ray as well?

I think that's a pretty safe assumption Ron.

Great news on The Abyss and True Lies, we never did get proper DVD versions of these. Looking forward to both.

That would be cool just to meet Cameron, and be able to go to an event like that.

Between him, and Ridley Scott, i couldnt pick my favorite of the 2.

Thanks for asking him, and posting what he told you, Adam! Count me in line...for all 3.

Thanks for the update Adam.

I'd be thrilled for another theatrical Titanic screening.  3D is fine, especially if Cameron himself is overseeing it.  Blu-Rays of the remainder of his films would be very welcome.

I too would love to meet Big Jim.  I think he's a fascinating guy.

Great news! I'd love to see Titanic on a movie theater screen again.

Also, I'm jealous that you got to meet Cameron.

Might be of interest to Cameron fans ... Might not.

But as Ricky Gervais reminds us, sometimes you gotta "Hava laff."

Thanks for the update Adam!  Personally, I don't care too much about a 3D conversion of Titanic - I'm squarely on the side of the skeptic as to how effective this "conversion" process really is, but the news about True Lies and The Abyss on Blu-Ray has definitely got me anxiously awaiting their release.

I was surprised and impressed by the quality of the 3D in The Nightmare Before Christmas, which was shot in 2D and only converted into 3D later.  So while I have my reservations about the process for artistic reasons, I have no doubts about the quality/effectiveness of the procedure.

I'm not especially interested in a 3D Titanic, but I, too am pumped for a Blu-ray release of The Abyss, a personal favorite.

Best thread title of the year so far. Great information too, of course.

I can still remember watching Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and The Abyss on the same day back in '89 at the theater in Southampton - and have loved The Abyss ever since. That is probably my # 1 wanted film on blu-ray (even more than the the Star Wars films I think)!

Thanks for posting, Adam!

I don't care much about 3D conversion even if it is as good as the original process!

I am looking forwarding to good 2D Blu-Rays of Cameron's films, however. It concerns me somewhat that long awaited releases might come in 3D now before 2D. I did not hear anything about 3D Blu-Ray being backwards compatible with 2D systems, and then the question of cost comes up again....like being charged more for DVD & Digital Copies being included that I do not need.

Knowing the perfectionist that Cameron is, I wonder if when he ports Titanic over to 3D, if he's going to re-render some CGI shots in Titanic which haven't aged well.

Thanks for the news, Adam. I've wanted better versions of The Abyss and True Lies for many years, so this is encouraging.

thanks adam. glad to hear that the abyss is finally coming to bluray sometime soon.

That is called the Lucas Syndrome.  The temptation would be too great to avoid.

I can't say anything about the cost, but 3D Blu-rays are backwards compatible.  They'll play just fine in 2D on existing Blu-ray players and displays.

Good to know! Thanks.

100% true.  I have a 3D copy of Monsters vs. Aliens that I was given by Samsung.  It will be given to all customers who purchase a Samsung 3D player and TV.  It automatically played fine in 2D on my laptop drive.  Even if you have a 3D setup, you can via the menu on your TV switch from 2D to 3D.

Thanks for the confirmation, Adam, since I don't have access to any 3D Blu-rays myself and was just going on what's been reported about the Blu-ray 3D spec.  I don't have any reason to question that, but it's nice to hear that it works as expected.

Here's a pretty extensive and interesting interview with Cameron on 3D that ran in the USA Today business section today.

content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2010/03/james-cameron/1

He reveals that Titanic will probably not debut in 3D until Spring of 2012, or the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

He also suggests that the 3D Blu-ray consumer release of Avatar may be delayed because of a possible return theatre engagement of the movie in the Fall due to Alice in Wonderland bumping it out of 3D theaters now (before Avatar had maximized its potential theatre earnings). Which also helps explain why this is in the Money money money section.

Great to hear about True Lies coming (hopefully soon).  The Abyss is a bit of a mixed bag for me due to its ending (in both versions), but I'm glad for its fans anyway.

Not sure I care for Titanic in 3D at all -- other than some rerendered FX-type shots w/ the ship and such, I really don't see how it'd play better in 3D.  I'd much rather just see the 2D BD in max quality (w/ some solid extras) coming soon instead.

Thanks, Adam!  Great to hear that The Abyss will finally get some Blu-ray love.  It's one of my all time favorite movies!
The Abyss has always been one of my favorite movies, so I'll buy that one definitely. Hopefully it will be possible to let Alan Silvestri re-do the score on some of the Director's Cut (or was it Special Edition?) scenes, especially the ending. The synthesizer trying to pass as a full orchestra doesn't gel with the rest of the soundtrack, which does use synths, but more in an ambient way.

That's excellen news Adam about The Abyss
