Hi all,

I am currently looking to set up a theatre system for my rumpus, with no knowledge on how sound systems at all. I've been reading around on CNET and all that but Im still not sure what the differences are between systems.

Anyway.. my rumpus is 4000mm x 5670mm with speaker wires already placed through the walls. The wires come out through the ceiling, although ill be happy with standing speakers if neccesary(I will also be satisfied with a 5.1 system if this suits my budget more). My budget is under $2000, which I stress as this is the maximum limit. I am not looking for anything flashy, just quality, reliable sound that is easy to s

The following is a floorplan of my rumpus(carpetted and windows with blinds). The black indicates where the tv is, the entrance has no door(yet) and the blue dots indicate where i have my wires sticking out.rumpus view.png
Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance
John

At $2000 I would recommend the following from SVS:

7.1 surround system with SBS-01 mains and PB10-NSD*

$1449 $1275

- or -

7.1 Deluxe surround system with SBS-01 mains and PB12-NSD **

$1569
$1419

From - svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm

Pair with an Onkyo 607 for $369 on sale:

www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR607-7-2-Channel-Surround-Receiver/dp/B001VEI2KO/ref=sr_1_1

and you have an excellent HT system that will blow you away at a relatively inexpensive price. This will also handle all your HDMI connections and Blu-ray HD audio for now and the foreseeable future.

I have a question about your layout...  You have only the center speaker with the TV?

I'm pretty sure that is just the location where the wires come out of the wall.

Amazon has a package deal with a Yamaha 565 and Klipsch HD500 5.1 speaker package with iPod dock - add a pair of Klipsch rear surrounds and you're set for under a grand.

David Willow: Yes that is where i have the wires inserted through the wall, not actual speakers.

Jeff Gatie: Sorry I am a total newbie, Can you please explain to me the relevance of the video inputs of the Onkyo, is it do with the syncing with audio signals? Also, are you suggested to purchase the main by itself or the speakers as well as recommended by svsound.com.

Thanks for the help

So I've only just realised that this is an American forum, as I am from Australia, the items listed are close to double the price. Is there anything cheaper that can be recommended?

Is this package alright?

HDMI inputs are the most advanced audio/video connection on the market.  HDMI carries both audio and video and is comaptible with the current copy protection schemes for all media.  The Onkyo unit listed above also processes the lossless HD audio formats found on Blu-ray disks (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA) which give you the best sound quality currently available (better sound than the theater).

As far as being in Australia is concerned, I'm sorry I didn't note that before giving US centric suggestions.  My mistake.  However, the Onkyo unit would still be a good base on which to build, and should be available in some form in your country.  Let's hope some of our non-US members pipe up with other suggestions.

Yes, hopefully!

I like the Onkyo, from the review I've read, it sounds like a solid receiver more than capable of producing good sound. However the problem is that it can cost around $1000 here in Australia which willl take up half of my budget. Do you know of any other receivers which maybe be cheaper by approximately $150 USD as that maybe more affordable for me, or are recievers supposed to take up that much of the budget?

Cheers
