vsx 21 thx video paramater problem

Thread Starter
I've had this receiver for a little over 3 weeks now and I've been tweaking the sound. This receiver has so much to over. Just when I think I like the sound, I play with it some more and it gets even better! It's been a real learning experience, frustrating at times but still enjoyable when the results are heard.
Now for my problem:
When I press the video paramater button on the remote, it says not available on the receiver screen. This worries me! I thought that everything would be upgraded to 1080i or 1080p. There are some stations that show up in 480i. Is there something I'm missing?
My hook ups are:
hdmi from receiver to TV
hdmi from blu ray to receiver
hdmi from cable box to receiver
Everything functions ok but why can't I get into the video paramaters?
Is this normal?
Any help would be appreciated !
thanks in advance
Rob

There must be a setting in the 21 or the source component (cable box?) or connection type that is preventing Video Parameters from being available. See page 68 of the manual if you haven't already done so.

I've read page 68 a hundred times hoping for a miracle but it's still no go !
let me ask this question: is this receiver able to upconvert a 480i cable program to 1080i or p ?
If so, mine is not doing it. I still get video parameters unavailable.
all my hook ups are HDMI.
I know this receiver is a complicated unit and I hope I'm doing something wrong
any help would be deeply appreciated!
thanks

Rob,

You don't need an up-conversion of the video signal from your receiver (I have no personal experience with that one, BTW). And it will probably pass the video signal unprocessed anyway (in fact, I prefer sending the video directly to a TV set or projector if that is possible, but I understand you may not be able to do that given the HDMI outputs on your player and cable box).

If the original signal isn't 1080, and you're using HDMI, your TV set will up-convert the signal itself. So if you want to look at any settings in regard to this, it should not be in your receiver, but on your TV.

In fact, your TV-set may be doing a much better job up-converting than several players or "up-converters".

I'm assuming, of course, that your TV is indeed full-HD (or else it wouldn't matter at all).

thanks for the info Cees. I must of not understood the specs of this receiver. I assumed that if I was getting a cable station that was broadcasting in 480i, that the receiver would up convert the signal to 1080i or p. I must be wrong.
My TV is a full 1080p.
thanks for your time Cees

No, you are correct. The 21 should convert the 480i to 1080p (as best as it can). What Cees was saying is that your display will also convert the signal to 1080p since 1080p is the only resolution it can display.

But you should be able to use the Video Parameter function.

First, the silly, stupid questions. Are you pressing the "Receiver" button first, then the "Video Parameter" button?

Second, is the On Screen Display function working (do you get the Home Menu on the display)?

Third, make sure Zone 2 is set to "Off".

Forth, is the cable box hooked up to an Input that utilizes the Video Parameter function? Those inputs are listed on pg 68 so I bet you've seen them.

If you can access the Video Parameter then set the V.Conv to "On".

My older Elite doesn't have this feature but It seems pretty straight forward in the manual. But there isn't anything in the manual on what to do when "Not Available" appears  .

So, Rob, please ignore my post. As I said, I don't have any experience with the VSX 21, and if Gene says it can do the upconversion: then it should!
(In both cases you would have to get 1080 i/p anyway!)

Not so fast there Cees. That's just my interpretation of the manual (that seems to be all I can do with a manual, interpret it! And quite badly sometimes). There must be something that I'm missing. I know there are some receivers that don't do any video processing when the signal arrives via HDMI but I can't find anything in the manual that confirms this. But it would explain the "Not Available" on the display.
