42" Philips LCD HDTV - no audio - do I need a new HDMI cable?

Bought new 42" Philips 3000 LCD TV. Connected to Scientific Atlanta cable box with Philips-brand HDMI cable.

Day 1: Amazing picture, sounds good (oddly QVC has best looking HD cable channel)

Day 2: Great picture, no audio.

Called philips tech support and they suggested unplugging cable from TV and cable box, then re-connecting. Everything works until you turn the TV off. Then you have to re-unplug HDMI cable and plug it back in every time you want to use the TV.

Philips tech. suggest buying a new HDMI cable to solve my problems.

So I have 2 questions

1. Is buying a different brand of HDMI cable really going to do anything?

2. When I get a new AVR (old one doesn't have HDMI or even component inputs) am I going to have to perform the unplugging ritual with twice as many HDMI cables (cable to AVR -> AVR to TV) every time I want to watch TV, or even just switch between the cable and my PS3?

Just hoping somebody has good news before I have to repack this heavy TV and take it back and exchange it for a different brand.

BUMP: New 250g PS3 arrived and more of the same problem! (This time with a GE brand HDMI cable)

Plug HDMI cable into the TV and everything works great until you switch the TV off. Unless you unplug and replug the HDMI cables I get picture but no sound.

This is really, really annoying.

Do you normally turn the TV on first, or the cable box?  Have you tried reversing the order?  It sounds like a handshake issue, and on some equipment the activation order makes a difference.

I agree with Joe. It sounds like a handshaking issue. I would play around with turning the TV off first and then the rest of the equipment instead of turning the TV off last. Or just turn off the TV and leave the rest of your equipment on. I know why my Panasonic if I turn off the TV first it turns off my Pioneer receiver. It doesn't work the other way around by turning off the receiver first. If I do that the TV stays on.

If that doesn't work I would think more along the lines that the problem is with the TV and not the cable.

I leave the cable box on 24/7 (mostly to record shows on the DVR). I just press the power button on the TV to shut it off.

There's no need to leave the SA DVR "on" 24/7.  It always draws standby power for the hard drive and will record your shows when it is "off".  Chances are your TV is failing to reinitialize the HDMI circuit when it starts up because it isn't seeing an initial "handshake" signal from the DVR - which isn't sending one because it is already on.  Try turning your DVR off each night, before you turn your TV off, and then turn the TV on before you next turn the DVR on.  I suspect you'll be getting sound from the TV.  If not, try varying the order in which you power things off and back on.  You will probably find one that works.  But leaving your DVR on all the time is almost certainly contributing to the problem, not to mention adding to your electric bill.

I have this same issue. No sequence of turning on/off the equipment works.
