battlestar galactica and space 1999 remastering.

I wonder if either show will ever be redone with cgi effects like the original star trek.
I would be against it.   To me, the charm of these shows lies in their being products of their time and to change the FX to make it look like it was made decades later would detract from the storytelling overall, which is why I never liked the Star Wars special editions and haven't bothered with the redone Treks.

I Agree. If they do these they might as well "Remaster" the Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers Serials as well!

Whether you like or dislike adding new effects to old shows, it's a non-issue in this instance becase it won't happen. I know people love Battlestar Galactica and Space: 1999 but not enough where a studio would spend the money on new effects. Star Trek is a special case in that it has an incredibly large and devoted fanbase who keep buying it over and over so spending millions to re-do special effects will actually generate money for the studio.

The Star Trek TOS Blu-ray releases have both the remastered and ORIGINAL effects. There is no reason to stay away from the Trek releases since they have the best of both worlds.

I would love to see Space 1999 on blu, but the only thing I think we'll see (in terms of remastering) is the digital removal of wires, which are very apparent on the dvd releases.

actually going through the Gil Gerard buck series i could see where this would be a nice addition, to what was originally done, for the momey spent per episode, BG and BR were supposedly two of the more expensive series produced at the time, if that was true then the continuity checks should have been in a better place, minor flubs, but i also have the nagging reuse over and over again of the same shots, if it was done with the same effect as what was done with trek, in other words upgraded, but not overpower the story, use the same designs, but remove the mistakes, and if BR gets done or BG hey i will give it a look, it will also give them better runs in syndication, because they can re-market it, just like trek, so i can see this happing in years to come,

Universal should only remastered the audio and video. They should not commit to creating new effects for either series.

I just think that the new CGI technology would look uneven against the video footage that was created back in the eighties. I would rather see the current footage enhanced and remastered for Blu-ray/HD.
This is Universal we are talking about .The only way that a remastered edition would come, is if they give these to another company.

I should have specified. The only thing that needs to be done with Battlestar is to remove the Matte lines around some of the shots which was the result of placing film over film. Space 1999's biggest problem is the use of wires which could removed without too much trouble.

Space 1999's effects were so revoltionary in it's day that they still hold up today. (To a certain degree)
The only thing I would like to see is that the video gets cleaned up and the artifacts removed from the video.

I'm not interested in the original BSG, but a blu-ray release of Space: 1999 would be fantastic--seeing those trippy, metaphysical S1 episodes in HD would compensate for Martin Landau's terrible acting!

well there is another way on the Buck franchising , guess the web based series is filming and well they found a way to get Gil and Erin in it as Bucks parents, clip is on you tube

Space 1999 has a pretty large international fanbase. Conventions are still held, and new merchandise has been coming out the past few years. The series has already been remastered in HD.

A group of fans have created a proof of concept for how to update the show, but respect the original model FX.

The proof of concept was interesting, but I would only support it if the original unaltered version was made available alongside it. Revitalizing a series is one thing, but they must preserve the original version.

I should note though, that when Galactica was released on DVD in 2003, it *was* remastered from the film elements and was given a treatment that Universal hasn't given to other series since then,    Galactica in fact, was a rare case of something Universal released on DVD prior to when they started rolling out their catalog en masse from old masters in 2004.

That may be because of the fact that the original BG series was about to lose the entire series to film. I think Universal was forced to act, much in the same way that George Lucas had to act on the original Star Wars movies because the original master copies of the films would be lost if they weren't restored.

A digital remastering of Space: 1999 on the same level as the effort recently done for The Prisoner blu-ray set would be great! No CGI necessary, just a beautiful clean image of the live action. If they want to remove the wires and fix little bits, I can understand, but it's part of the series, so it's not necessary.

The Star Trek TOS sets set the standard I think. And watching with original effects was the best bonus on that set.

As has already been mentioned here, BBC Resources have already remastered year one of Space in high-definition. BluRay's have not been released, but the masters are already available, both in pillarboxed 4:3 and cropped widescreen (I think the widescreen version has had some UK HD telecasts).

I don't know for sure if BBC Resources have remastered year two or not. I think it was planned (as Network were rumoured to have been planning a DVD release), but nothing's ever been announced so far as I know.

It would be nice if the eventual BRs of S1999 had both versions on it. I wouldn't want just a cropped version.

Hi Andy,

Thanks what a great link!!!! Thanks Andy for this great link and your post on the Dark Shadows thread.

I sure also want to cast my vote for a HD copy of this great series.

Here are Andys comments along with the link.

If you're talking about the original 1970s version, you are 100% correct. It got impressive ratings, ABC cancelled it because they were #1 and felt the ratings they got for the high production cost weren't justified, so the show was re-tooled to be less expensive (i.e. earthbound).

By they way, the producers originally tried to find a way to make a less-expensive second season work with the original cast, but I'm kind of glad it never went forward, because they were planning on making some decisions that I'm sure would have been unpopular: the loss of certain characters (Tigh, Sheba, Baltar and Drs. Wilker and Salik), Apollo and Starbuck exchanging personalities (Apollo becoming the womaniser following Sheba's death, Starbuck assuming leadership of Blue Squadron), Boomer ending up in a lab, essentially replacing Wilker, Casseopia somehow becoming the head of Life Sciences, and the recasting of Athena (which, to be fair, probably wasn't a bad idea). You can read more about this 100% genuine proposal that Larson pitched to the network here

I've never come across that proposal before; interesting stuff. I knew the producers were always disappointed with Maren Jensen's acting skills, but didn't know they planned to fire her like that...sheesh! I guess it happens in daytime soaps all the time though. The 6 episode story proposals are interesting though, and I think it's a shame they were never filmed frown.gif One believes the show would have gone this route logically anyway. The budget had already been reduced, and the secondary characters were given minimum screen time. Some characters seemed to be dropped off entirely. Boxey and Muffit seemed to disappear towards the end of the series, for example. Cassie had already gone from become a socialator to a nurse; I suppose in the Galactica world a medical degree can be had in six months. I would have missed Tigh, though, and switching Apollo's and Starbuck's personalities would not have done the show any kind of service. Sorry, but Richard Hatch wouldn't make the greatest womanizer in space...

Hi Ethan,

I too would have liked to see those plots. I feel the cheaping down of the show would have caused a ratings drop.

Andy what do you or any of the fans think of a HD version. I felt the show had a much larger following then Buck Rogers. I also felt because of the new BSG was the only reason Universal released 1980. I feel again the second series might help the HD release of the first one.

I can only hope. I am sorry that so many fans had problems with the DVD sets. I bought mine at Best Buy with the big Cylon Head. I had another on order at Amazon and I just could not wait and went to Best Buy. I wonder if the Best Buy sets were ok. I also had great service from Best Buy when I bought the movie Razor on DVD. The movie was suppose to contain some bonus disc.

Best Buy Corp gave me a 20 buck gift card for the missing disc. How nice they were to do that. I now have a blu ray Razor and two dvds because one was included in the season sets. I never purchased the complete series blu ray set. The dvds were ok for me.

I guess HD BSG2 sales could factor in too if the studio were to release the original in HD.

Depends on how much money they want to spend, and the viability of the original series as a hi-def entry for streaming and cable airings. I'm pretty sure, also, that they'd have to go back to the original elements and clean, remaster and recomposite all 24 hours. Big bucks to do it, but also big bucks (I think) if they get it done. And oh how I'd love to sell off that awful Cylon head box in favor of a nice little blu-ray set.

Hi Ethan,

I am with you on all points you made. The work on SNG for blue might wake them up. Galactica had quite a solid fan base. I would like to see the movie done in HD which I paid money to go and see at the local theater after the show ended. I remember how happy I was when HBO aired the two movies. The pilot and The Peagus movie.

I loved Razor for many reasons. I thought it was nice that the second BSG showed us the old Cylons and their ships. The acting of course was top notch!!!

I wonder what happened to the Space 1999 Year 2 blu-ray set? If I'm not mistaken, Bill Hunt confirmed several months ago that it was coming in the 4th quarter, but I've not heard anything since then.

Anyone?

I was really excited when I heard about Space: 1999 Season Two getting released on Blu-ray and was just wondering the same thing about this project the other day.

I hope A&E follows through with their plans as I will snatch this one up in a New York minute if it is given the same treatment as Season 1.

Season 1 looks and sounds fantastic on BD with the HD print and DTS.

If they correct some of the audio issues with the music (some of the sound levels are very low on some of the background music tracks) and give this the full video and audio treatment that they gave Season 1, I'll be the first in line to buy a copy!

I've been waiting to hear any little bit of news about the progress on this release for months now and hope we will not be disappointed.

i am still hoping that uni re-releases battlestar on single sided discs like they are planning for the first season of buck rogers.

I for one would like to see the effects get a la Star Trek: Original Series redo. Also like to see come to blu-ray but thinking the effects, because of the processing, would not look any better than dvd set. I could be wrong on this but just going with a gut reaction.

Ideas that might have happened with season 2 would not make many of the fans happy and we would still most likely get stuck with the same stock shots of battle scenes and other shots outside the ships. Especially if they planned on cutting the budget this would be one way to lower costs. Based on the scripts the actors were fed, Maren Jensen's acting wasn't the only one that came across as wooden or weak. At times Dirk's, Richard's, Anne's lines came across as hard to listen to. Of course lot of shows had that juvenile feel to dialog back in the 70's and hard to compare to shows today that have that more gritty feel to it and the writing seems more mature.

I also had a broken disc from the Cylon box set because the keeper was to tight and made it hard to remove the disc. I just returned the set and bought another one at BB. helped that i worked there and had no problem.
