I'm currently looking at a number if blu ray players and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend them. I'm basically looking for average loading times, playback of DVD's and average loading times for blu ray disks. The models I'm looking at are the following:

Sony Blu Ray Player (Model: BDP S360

Philips Blu Ray Player
Model: BDP5010, Model: BDP5005 (Walmart Verson)

Pioneer Blu Ray Player (Model: BDP-120FD)

I would recommend the panasonic 60/80 or the two insignia blu ray players. or even the 2 oppo players. the wired version of insignia is 99 bucks this week at best buy. its pretty fast on loading up.

TheBat, I'm not that big on Insignia. I heard that Best Buy got caught in a flap of their own over their Insignia HDTV's and that they were catching on fire. They also limited consumers on how they could return them.

Have you had any problems  with disk loading or DVD playback on older TV shows? What about the PQ?

This would be my first purchase of a blu ray player and I'm a little cautious with buying one if it's not going to play DVD's. Oh, and thanks for the reply on those models, I'll definitely check them out.

Of the one's you mentioned, I'd say the Sony S360.
But even more than that, I'd recommend the Oppo. They have a new cheaper one: BDP-80, that some folks like. But I have personal experience with their BDP-83, and it's an awesome player. It's a little pricier than the others listed though ($499).

I would be interested in the Oppo, but, those two models are a bit pricey for me. Maybe if they were releasing a sub-$200 unit, I might be interested. I'm just lookign for a blu ray player that will play DVD's and blu ray with no difficulty.

1-PS-3: fastest boot-up and loading and very good upconversion, firmware updates very easy if you have wireless network in your home.  Pricey at 299 min.  Very robust and trouble free piece of equipment.  Doesn't require external memory for BD-Live content.  Has many capabilities beyond just playing discs.

2-either the Panasonic 60/80 or the Sony 360, should be available well under 150.  Philips is probably a Funai product (think Sylvania, Magnavox, etc.)

Of those listed, the Sony is a great value.  I'd tell you though you can find Refurb Sony PS3s at most gamestops for around $229.  They warranty and hold them up, and they are durable as sin and you'll of course get more then just a fast BD player.

Ignore the Phillips.  My father has that.  Maybe the slowest load time I've ever been around.  It's damn annoying.

with the few players that I have had including the ps3 (80) , panasonic 80, the toshiba and the insignia. they all seem to play the blurays and dvds just fine. I had not heard of that problem with the insignia player. you got a link for it?

Has anyone had any problems with picture quality when playing older television show DVD's on your blu ray player? While I have an upconvertable DVD player right now that I'm using, I've noticed some bad distortion and I'm wondering if blu ray players do a better job at upconverting standard DVD's.

what older tv series are you talking about? I have the classic 1960s series of star trek.

I have noticed that shows like Jag and Rockford Files are extremely blurry when using an hdmi cable with upconvertable DVD players. I'm just wondering if that isn't a problem with blu ray players ...

Well, just purchased the Sony BDP S360 and I have yo say that despite all of the complaints I've read online, this model seems to work fine with standard DVD's. I tested a few classic TV shows, which I have on DVD, and the BR player seems to play them fine. While there is some noticeable artifacting where the unit tries to upscale DVD's, it's not that bad.

Like to thank everyone for their advice and reviews.
