Well, Supertrain made it to air, too...

I thought it was interesting to see a business that most of us weren't familiar with. It's not that hard to understand- race the horses, collect bets, sell tickets, sell food...

I had no idea that Churchill Downs owns tracks in several states, and I was wondering how they were going to do an episode that all took place at the HQ.

This was the least interesting episode yet IMO.

Mike's correct in that I think a race track business is far too expansive to really get my head around it thus I couldn't really connect with anything.

The ending of these episodes always end the same, I half expect one of these CEO's to utter the line "Buy some more coal! Before you dot another 'I' Bob Cratchet!" The bad CEO gets a visit from the ghosts of business past, present and future and suddenly become good and charitable.

I might throw in the towel on this one soon.

Thanks, Matt.  I had to get all the way to the end of that rather boring piece of business writing to find this nugget:

The popularity of “Undercover Boss” — CBS calls it the “number one new series of the season,” averaging almost 19 million viewers per episode — is fueled, in part, by angry and frustrated American workers who want, or maybe need, to see rich bosses struggle and bumble, many of the CEOs agreed. After the heads of some U.S. banks and automakers were blamed for the national recession, it just feels good to laugh at real, red-faced executives.

I guess that could account for its renewal by CBS.    And I thought my negative comments would be enough to drive it off the air!

Did anyone else think that one rude customer service person last night was a man? I did...for the entire segment.

It wasn't until the CEO's private testimonial afterward when he kept saying "she" that I realized I had made a huge mistake.

I would have, John...except she was introduced to the boss as "Danielle."

I was actually watching this week's episode on my DVR when I read your post.  I just finished it now.

"Danielle underwent customer service retraining.

She is no longer with the company."

I was seriously wondering how she was supposed to handle that call. The customer wanted something that she didn't have the authority to do, so what was she supposed to do? Notice the CEO didn't do any better on the phone.

The CEO was too busy trying to figure out the lawsuit from when he whacked the other employee in the face with a box while trying to load the truck!

I guess there's some truth in this!

So...wife and I are watching Sunday's Undercover Boss tonight (recorded on the DVR).  This is the one with the CEO of Roto-Rooter.

In the segment where he was sitting with the Customer Service girl who handles incoming phone calls in Chicago, they took a break after her exasperation with him and retired to a breakroom.

I paused the show and turned to my wife and said, "here's where we find out that she's a single mother with an autistic kid."  After a few comments, he asks her, "do you have any family out here?"  She said--I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP--that there's her autistic son and she's having trouble affording day care so her parents are watching him during the day.  Score

So we've now turned it into a game.  During each segment we pause the show while the CEO has an intimate moment with a specific employee and try to guess what their "problem" is.

Maybe we can turn it into a drinking game somehow!
