Censored Cartoons to Be Shown at Turner Classic Movie Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles

Part of a press release about the Turner Classics Film Festival

Removed from Circulation: A Cartoon Collection
– Presented by author Donald Bogle
Donald Bogle, author of Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams: A History of Black Hollywood, will present cartoons that have been kept from the public eye because of negative racial or cultural stereotypes. The collection includes several classic Warner Bros. cartoons. Bogle will provide insight into the racial attitudes of the times in which the cartoons were created. Titles include Clean Pastures (1937), Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarves (1943), Goldilocks and the Jivin’ Bears (1944), Hittin’ the Trail for Hallelujah Land (1931), The Isle of Pingo Pongo (1938), Sunday Go to Meetin’ Time (1936), Tin Pan Alley Cats (1943) and Uncle Tom’s Bungalow (1937)

Perhaps this will be recorded and the cartoons released on pressed DVDs

Hopefully this means that a DVD is imminent.  This might even get me to dip my toes in the Archive waters if it were released that way.

I desperately wanted to attend this festival, but too much going on this year and i couldn't justify the expense.

The Archive would be a good place for these; they won't end up on store shelves where people who aren't interested would find them and complain.

Even in the archive, there'll be people who would complain!

But then Warner would more or less be able to tell those people to go [unkind four-letter verb] themselves, since there'd be disclaimers and everything.

If they're taking the trouble to screen these cartoons at a major studio-hosted and sponsored screening in Los Angeles, then a DVD should seem like a less intimidating prospect than in previous years.

Well they released the Our Gang shorts uncut along with the Dogville Comedies and several 1930's pictures that had PC problems, so it should be easy to do.  Especially if they can get Donald Bogle to possibly do an into to a set.

I sure would like to have good transfers of these historic cartoons.
