Heads up on an upcoming forum area consolidation coming up

Every few years we take a look at the forum areas to make sure they still make sense.  That time has come again and we will be making some changes.  Some forums will get new names to better describe them, others will get moved and others removed.  The biggest change is the fact that the High Def area is going to go away.  This area was created to keep all the format war discussion between HD DVD and BD out of the rest of the forum.  Last time I looked that is no longer an issue.  It makes sense to take the HD HW thread, expand it to include other non-BD HD HW and move it to the HW areas.  The HD SW thread gets moved to the SW area eliminating the need for a separate HD area.  Additionally we are combining the TV on DVD with TV on BD areas When the dust settles late this week/early next week here is what they will look like.  The text in blue reflects items that are changing and the text in CAPS is the change.

Home Theater:
Beginners and General Questions   RENAMED
Members' Theaters, Controls, Remotes and HT Projects ADDED CONTROLS AND REMOTES IN THIS AREA

Displays (HDTVs/Projectors/Screens) ADDED SCREENS

Home Theater Software (Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Downloads):  RENAMED

Blu-ray (and Other Hi-Def Software): Film and Documentary  MOVED HERE FROM HD AREA WHICH IS NOW GONE, NOW INCLUDES OTHER HD MEDIA
DVD (and Other Standard Def Software) : Film and Documentary  RENAMED NOW INCLUDES OTHER SD MEDIA  (LD, ETC)
TV on DVD and Blu-ray (and Other Software) RENAMED NOW INCLUDES TV ON BD

No changes to the Marketplace or Feedback forum areas? For goodness' sake, they're the MOST important!

You've probably thought this through...but there are probably a number of threads (in the current SD - Software and HD - Software forum areas, for example) that don't clearly denote that they particularly refer to the BD or SD versions of the software discussed in that thread.

Thanks for the heads-up, Adam.  Very helpful.

I can only imagine you'll get some pushback from members who would prefer to keep things segregated.  But I would think most members must find themselves spending time in both forums...unless they have yet to make the jump to HD.

I could be misunderstanding you, but I don't think this will really be a problem.  Essentially the HD Software forum is going to move (with all its posts) from the High Definition area (which is going away) to the Home Theater Software area and get renamed to Blu-ray and other HD Software.  The SD Software areas are just doing to get renamed to have DVD in the title.  So all posts that are currently in those areas will still be there after the moves and renames.

Going forward the DVD on TV area will include BD.  I don't know how ambitious we will be about moving old BD on TV threads from the HD SW area to it.

The HD area served its purpose during the format war.  Now its just confusing, and since it is fairly mainstream (at least around HTF) why not combine it?

I was the one who misunderstood you.  I thought you were combining the HD & SD Software (film & doc.) threads into one big software forum.  But now I see they are remaining separate, but equal.    Sorry for any confusion.

===========

The Feedback & Marketplace Areas are remaining, and unchanged?

No problem.  They will be separate forums, but now under a common heading.  It should make it a lot easier to move between talking about DVDs and BDs.

I think you should bite the bullet and just combine HD and SD now.  Soon enough there won't BE an SD.  It will just be stuff.

Current Movies
Current TV
Packaged / Downloadable Movies
Music

Etc.

And you think we have rough feedback now!    The next step at some point down the road depending on how often they are discussed is to add a download/PPV/non-packaged media forum.  Right now there are a lot of members who are only focused on BD and some who are only interested in DVD and the rest who are interested in both.  It makes sense for now to keep them separate.

Agree with Adam.

We are nowhere near the demise of DVD.

If and when it gets to that point we will certainly combine the areas.

I'm just saying if you are going through the pain now of reorging might as well prep for the future.  It's going to be hard no matter when you do it unless you keep em seperate forever.

I agree with Adam and Ron.  I am only interested in SD-DVD, no interest in HD/Blu-Ray or downloadable formats.

OK, all done.  Changes are live and navigation menus have been updated.
Adam...

I know the future of the forum navigation is still up in the air...but since you re-ordered the sub-forums last night, you should probably re-order the listing of sub-forums on the "More Forums' navigation to parallel them.

It should happen automatically.  Mine matches the changes I made last night.  Can you check again?  I haven't done any cache clearing or anything else.

On on my work PC right now and everything looks fine.

On a laptop at home last night, everything looked as it was a few days ago (Insiders at the top, etc.).  Probably a cache issue on that machine, I guess.  Sorry.

Nothing to be sorry for.

Back on the laptop at home...and the More Forums menu still reflects the old line-up.  I will do a cache clear and report back.
Hmmmmm.  Still no change.  I'm sure it will work itself out.  Maybe after the next time I shut 'er down.
It looks right now!  It did the trick.

[nitpick]Should the order of sub-forums in "Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Downloads" be DVD/TV/BD (as you have it) or BD/DVD/TV (as it is suggested in the forum title)?[/nitpick]

Now I don't want to see another response about the menu not being updated!
