Sound Of Music 2010 ??????? - Page 8

I agree about the original cover art.  Plus, not crazy about the blue color scheme vs the original beige-peach. But still excited to get this.

The original poster artwork was done by the same artist who did the 1967 widescreen reissue poster of GONE WITH THE WIND (the iconic Clark Gable carrying Vivien Leigh through a burning Atlanta).  It is also reminiscent of the style of the iconic JAWS poster.  It was gritty like the 60s and now they give us this fluff.

I don't consider a 45th anniversary CD, a repro of the original souvenir book and a hardback scrapbook of over 100 pages to be junk, and I bet most other big fans of the movie would agree these are not just thrown together extras. These are items any fan of this movie would like to own! I bet that scrapbook is full of rarities from the Fox vault!

I agree. It would be one thing if they just threw in a bunch of cheap Chinese-made trinkets with Julie Andrews' face on them. But I consider a reproduction of the Roadshow souvenir book and a 100 page scrapbook and a soundtrack CD to be worthwhile items. However, I dislike the fact that the box is too wide to fit with normal BDs and DVDs (same problem with GWTW, Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, and Mel Brooks). Where storage is concerned I'll simply take out the BD and store it normally with all the others.

On the other hand, it's the transfer that counts most of all. Neither of the two DVDs were satisfying in that respect. When I saw the film in 70mm at the AMPAS' Best Picture series, it looked like the hills really were alive. This movie is the reason there's still a 20th Century Fox, and it deserves nothing less than a Blu-Ray that captures the beauty of the cinematography, and of course, the sound of its music. I wonder how they're going to get 7.1 when it was six-track originally (I defer to the expertise of others on the finer points of the mix, like whether it was actually six-tracks; if I recall correctly a lot of the 70mm films were simply four-track mixes spread out to six-track.). Would they go back to the separate individual music, dialogue, and effects tracks (assuming they can all be found) or simply remix the existing one?

After its roadshow release in 70mm Todd-AO, 35mm CinemaScope prints were for local theatres that didn't have 70mm projectors.

Thank you VERY much for that very interesting information.

There was a 35th anniversary edition that had the album as it was presented originally, and a second disc of songs (and some instrumental cues) as they were presented in the film. The 30th anniversary laserdisc came with a CD with complete songs and cues that have yet to be released elsewhere (like the exit music). It also says in the CD insert that it went back to the 35mm music masters.

There are a few cues that have never been on CD and are only on the isolated music track, both long and short (including two complete cues that were shortened in the film, and one that was eliminated entirely), because they couldn't fit onto one CD back in 1994. It would take two discs to fit all the music of the film. Here's the track listing from the 1994 CD:

1. 20th Century Fox Fanfare With Cinemascope Extension (this one is a headscratcher, as the logo was silent in the movie! Still nice to have)

2. Prelde and The Sound of Music (contains previously unreleased material)

3. Main Title

4. Preludium (contains previously unreleased material)

5. Maria

6. I Have Confidence (contains previously unreleased material)

7. Sixteen Going on Seventeen (contains previously unreleased material)

8. My Favorite Things (contains previously unreleased material)

9. Salzburg Montage (contains previously unreleased material)

10. Do Re Mi

11. The Sound of Music reprise (contains previously unreleased material)

12. The Lonely Goatherd (contains previously unreleased material)

13. Edelweiss (previously unreleased)

14. Grand Waltz (previously unreleased)

15. Laendler (previously unreleased)

16. So Long Farewell

17. Processional Waltz (previously unreleased)

18. Goodbye Maria/How Can Love Survive Waltz (previously unreleased)

19. Edelweiss Waltz (previously unreleased)

20. Entr'acte (previously unreleased)

21. Climb Every Mountain (contains previously unreleased material)

22. Something Good (contains previously unreleased material)

23. Processional and Maria

24. Sixteen Going on Seventeen (previously unreleased with a lyric cut from the film)

25. Do Re Mi reprise (previously unreleased)

26. Edelweiss reprise (contains previously unreleased material)

27. Nuns and Nazis (previously unreleased)

28. Escape/Climb Every Mountain reprise (contains previously unreleased material)

29. End Title (previously unreleased)

I looked up the 40th Anniversary Track Listing on Amazon and compared it to the tracks on the 35th anniversary edition (where the second disc has the extended tracks 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 combined, 13, 14, 15, 17, 21, 22, 24, 26, 27, and 28 from the 1994 laserdisc-only CD, plus an archival interview with Richard Rodgers) and it seems the 40th anniversary edition used album tracks while adding some bonuses, some interviews, and the reprises of My Favorite Things and So Long Farewell taken from the mixed film soundtrack and not the recording sessions. I played the samples, and I could hear foley effects on the So Long, Farewell reprise and the kids' yelling "look Maria's back" over Julie singing "silver white winters…" on the My Favorite Things reprise.

It's disappointing that even though the complete score exists, there isn't a 100% complete representation of it on CD anywhere. In my opinion, the CD that came with the 1994 laserdisc box set is the best representation of the film's soundtrack that currently exists. The 2000 DVD, for all its shortcomings in the transfer department, is the only place to hear the music score without the sound effects, albeit compressed.

So here's the funny thing.  It turns out it's the 35th anniversary CDs that I own (not the 40th).  Time must be flying-by a little quicker than I realized.

Just ordered  the 3 disc version from Amazon  UK for £11.19, which works out about $17.50, with free delivery.

Wasn't Todd-AO supposed to be super sharp high definition on 70mm?  Have they been using the 35mm print for the releases so far?

The laserdisc box set was from 70mm.  As I understand it, releases from the Todd-AO 70mm will have the Todd-AO credit in the title sequence. 35mm releases do not have this credit.

From what I remember is that Fox not only used the 70mm (Todd-AO) for the laser box of The Sound Of Music, but also used the large format materials for a laser release of South Pacific and Oklahoma.  I still have the laser Oklahoma (Todd-AO) since the DVD version was so horrible.

Robert, et al,

I actually called it "big box-o-junk release" as a term of endearment of sorts -- borrowing the term coined for other releases that I'd definitely agree to be more accurate.  Yeah, looking back at my posts, my usage there probably wasn't clear at all, but if I seriously considered it junk, I wouldn't be consider it at all w/ knowledge that the disc-only set will be coming out soon enough.

Anyway, as I alluded in a subsequent post, I still might be tempted enough to get that big box release even if the disc-only set comes out around the same time.  I actually (still) own the old LD box set -- that I bought slightly used back during the last couple years of that format -- as I mentioned much earlier, so yes, this would be one of few rare cases I'd serious consider splurging.

Yeah, do y'all remember watching the opening credits on some of the earlier releases on VHS and laserdisc when the bell ringing would jump because they removed the Tood-AO credit?

Warner...yep, and the first tape ended before the Intermission. The Intermission was cut, as was the master shot at the start of part two with the vehicles arriving at the Von Trapp house for the party! It started with the band playing.

I used to have that version. IIRC it was the 1986 CBS/Fox release. But I always thought the carriages outside the villa came after the first shot of the orchestra. I do remember the omission of the intermission title and the ent'racte, which was not restored until the 1990 25th anniversary VHS (the beginning of a string of different Rodgers & Hammerstein collections that has apparently been broken with Blu-Ray).

Thanks so much for that clip! I'm getting really excited now about this one! I have a feeling that maybe they haven't gone back to the 70mm for a home video release before....?

Anyone else seeing this is the theaters next week! We are.

Tom Petty was right: the waiting is the hardest part.

It looks like after 30 years of less than 100% greatness on Beta, VHS, laserdisc, and DVD (not to mention the TV broadcasts), they may finally do this film justice on home video. Even the clarity of the material in the compressed Facebook video impresses me and has me more excited. I may even go to the Fathom screening.

I wonder what condition the original negative was in. When Video Magazine discussed the 30th anniversary LD box, they said the negative was in decent shape. I imagine the negative saw at least as much action as that of My Fair Lady, and we all know what that movie's been through.

Now I hear Sony Legacy is doing a 45th anniversary CD reissue. It's the original soundtrack album all over again with a bonus track: Lea Michele singing "My Favorite Things." That doesn't exactly fill me with glee (no pun intended). I imagine this is what they'll put in the box set instead of the completely complete soundtrack the film needs and deserves. Maybe for the 50th anniversary…

Robert:

Thanks for posting that clip.

That does sound VERY exciting.  After the tragedy that was the Todd-AO version of Oklahoma (in its last DVD release), it is really exciting to hear those restorationists in their excitement over the effort they put into making the film look its best in high-def!

I would love to have both versions of Oklahoma! in HD looking much better than OK, up to the standards of the other R&H film restorations.

Watching the Facebook documentary on the HD restoration looks better than anything I've seen outside the theatres on THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  I saw this film in theatres many times and the image was so sharp that you could see every eyelash and wrinkle in faces.  I know some scenes had a diffusion filter, but most were very sharp.  And I also remember the color being kind of subdued.  I also definitely remember Julie Andrews audibly murmuring after getting a drink at the water fountain as she walks away from the nuns at the end of the MARIA number.

Wow!  That Facebook post does look awesome!  Only thing though is I'm wondering if the color is a bit too green biased.  Is this maybe a trait of the film stock used?  I have no idea, but the green bias seems to appear in a few other old titles as well -- African Queen comes to mind at the moment.  OR is it just due to all the greenery in many of the scenes (as could be the case for African Queen) -- though I kinda doubt there was enough of that in SoM to bias the light that much?

November can't come soon enough...this release is the cherry on top of a very busy release week!!!

I bought this and watched it yesterday.. Is there a review of it out yet?

There was a mildy annoying greenish tint throughout that appeared for a few seconds, then went back to "normal"..

Anyone else notice this?
