Not getting voice track from DVD

Thread Starter
We just moved into a new house that has speakers in the ceiling and I'm trying to hook up our stereo system to these.

Our components:

Sony Blu-Ray DVD player
Samsung Television
Pioneer VXS-519V-K Receiver

I also have a cable modem and tivo, but I'm planning to tie them into the receiver. I only want to tie in the DVD player and ultimately an iPod.

I believe I've done all connections correctly. However, when I play a DVD, I get the video and the audio, but only of the background music, not the voice track.

I've tried looking through the Pioneer manual and have searched online, but cannot find anything about this. Does anyone know if I've done something wrong, or if it's some setting that's not right?

Also, when I play a CD, I get the voice singing and background music just fine.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice!

The dialog generally is localized to the front center channel speaker.  Does this system include a center channel speaker in the front of the room?  If so, verify that it's connected to the center channel speaker posts on your receiver.

If there is no center channel speaker, then you will need to configure the receiver to function without a center channel.  Within the speaker setup menu, there should be a screen where you can select which speakers are included with your setup.  By turning the center channel "off" your main front speakers will inherit the center channel signal and produce a "phantom" center.  It's not an ideal solution, but it's all you can do until you add a center channel.

If you do have a center channel speaker, and your receiver is configured correctly, then the problem may lie within the center speaker or the receiver.  Try hooking the left front speaker to the center channel connection on the reciever and see if any sound can be heard - if not, then the problem may be with the reciever.  Conversely, you can hook the center channel speaker to the left front output to see if there's any sound.  If not, then the problem likely is with the center channel speaker.
