Looking to Upgrade and Minimalize

Hi Guys, this is my first post on the site and I would like to get some advise from all you audiofiles out there...I currently have an aperion audio 5.1 bookshelf system that is 6 years old and has been very good to me.  I would like to get an upgrade and minimize the space using a smaller system and less wires.  I would like to spend around 1500 and i have done some research lately and i am torn as to whether I should go with a soundbar system or a compact system like Orb Audio.  My living room is 10 X 18 the problem is that the back of the room there are no walls and it leads to a 28-30 foot foyer going down to my townhouse entrance.

If anyone has any advise on some systems that are affective and are the best bang for the buck, please let me know.  i appreciate anyones advice!

Well its at least good to see that I got 800+ views.... would love to have at least one response.

I have a followup question, shoulc I upgrade my current Onkyo TXDS898 receiver, it does not have HDMI but I can do the switching through my Viera 46" plasma.

I'm not a speaker expert: I'm looking for a new set myself and have a thread around here somewhere :)

You're not going to reduce wires without going to a wireless system or a front-speaker only setup.

I've read Aperion is coming out with a wireless systems; no idea the price. The speaker bars seem to get decent reviews (understanding their limitations). I don't know anything about Orb audio or other compact speakers. I think generally you can't deny physics, and the smaller the speaker, the more significant the roll-off between the mains and the subwoofer. But, having a system that suffers that, it's not that noticeable on its own.

If the Onkyo has enough digital audio inputs to support all of your connected devices, then yes, you can simply use the Onkyo as an audio switcher, and route all the video signals via HDMI directly to the TV.  Hopefully this is what you meant by "switching".  If per chance, you were running audio and video via HDMI into the TV, then audio out from the TV to the reciever via a digital optical cable, then that doesn't work - you only get stereo.

What HDMI provides is 1080p video, and a means (other than analog audio cables) to transmit the lossless audio formats of Blu-Ray over a single cable.  If neither of those are requirements for you at this time, then there's little reason to upgrade.  The Onkyo 607 is a great, inexpensive HDMI 1.3 repeater reciever that is a great option if you decide that an upgrade is worth it.
