What's wrong with my Samsung Plasma??

I've had this set (Samsung PN50A510) for a little over a year now, but I'm still unhappy with the picture quality - the main problem is the "shading", where there's an abundance of pinks and greens making the colors look unnatural. Its very evident with fleshtones, where the darker areas of say, someone's face, where instead of a darker flesh color it becomes a greenish-grey. Scenes featuring large areas of beige look awful, just a mess of pink and green.

I've used the Blu-ray version of "DVD Essentials" in an attempt to callibrate my set, and I noticed on the "white balance" the gradients looked like piano keys - the shading was bad, and I think the narrator said something about if the transition is noticeable its an indication of a poor digital processing. Maybe that's the problem...

I'm using HDMI to connect through my Onkyo TX-SR606 (I've tried bypassing this, feeding directly to the tv, no changes), and a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray disc player. The problem seems to be worse using the Blu-ray as opposed to HD cable, wondering if that's the problem; woudn't think so, as its a reliable brand.

I've scoured the manuals, and I believe I have the settings correct - I'm just throwing this out from frustration, thought someone might be able to shed some light. Thanks for your interest.
