iTunes music manager (duplicate eliminator)

Thread Starter
I recently had to reinstall (reintroduce?)  my substantial music library on my iMac.  I kept getting stuck on the spinning beach ball.   Reinstalling the music helped, but for some reason it decided to read 3-4 copies of all of my songs.   I have no idea why....

I need to delete all of the duplicate copies.  I have seen software out there for this task - some costs around $15 and some is free.   The free stuff is what scares me, but I hate to throw money away.

Has anyone here had any experience with these programs / this situation?

Perhaps this is too tedious for your situation, but iTunes has a "show duplicates" tool in the menu. You can select and delete the dupes yourself.

It used to be the default setting for iTunes that when you added a song to your library, it copied the file to the iTunes folder.  Do you actually have multiple copies of each song file?
