A few words about...™ Gangs of New York (Take Two) -- in Blu-ray - Page 3

I've been bitten before by incorrect info on the DD website -- though it was for their rather suspect, bargain priced SACD selection (before the new site changeover late last year) -- so their UPC listing was not a very solid confirmation for me.  I didn't notice them listing the different audio format, but that also could be suspect on their site.  It also doesn't help that it often takes a long time to receive an order from them -- and seems like a bit of pain (and not cost-effective) to return anything (unless I'm already spending substantial $ on it).  In the end, I just chalked the risk up as my own "cost of doing business" w/ them (and getting a great deal).

I'm yet to find this on the shelves up here in my neck of the Great White North.  I'm wondering if any other Canucks have found a remastered version?  Future Shop have an exclusive Steel Book case version available.  It says nothing about being remastered though, and the feebs that work there tell me that if I buy it to check it out, I can't return, not even for store credit.  I'm wondering if anyone on here bit on this new release?

I would suggest simply purchasing this through Amazon. The proper version is well-identified on their website. I paid $16 U.S. through them back in August. The remastered version looks great.

Purchasing from Amazon.com is not really feasible for Canadians.  US$16 for the disc + shipping + Amazon collects the tax.  By the time it arrives, we'll have spent close to $25 whereas the tin version can be purchased at Walmart for $16 after taxes.

PS:  the tin is still released by Alliance but with DTS-MA audio.  How about the previous Canadian version?  Did it use LPCM or DTS-MA?

Does that audio track mean it's the upgraded picture one?  I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was.

^ Numerous Canadians have reported the version in the tin from Walmart for $14 is the remastered version, as indicated by the audio specced as DTS-HD MA. However...I haven't read a comment from anybody confirming this *after* they have watched it... So your chances are still 50/50 , Canadian discs are notoriously unreliable for their package audio specs. I tried to get a copy last night but no dice. Maybe today with the new Tuesday stock...I'll take the chance and report if I can get one.

Edit: hmmm, none last night, less than 12 hours later it's in stock for $22...I passed...it'll be cheap again.

I haven't checked out this thread in  awhile so I could have assured you to rest easy. The steelbook copy of Gangs of New York is the remastered version and it looks fabulous.

Didn't you state this in your Shutter Island review:

Image quality is superb, [...] Shutter Island is everything that it should be.

Just wondering if it's worth waiting for the supposed "All-New Digital Restoration" of Shutter Island?

I watched this movie for the first time last night after picking it up for $5.99 at Best Buy. Beautiful cinematography and the remastered transfer is excellent. However, the movie just didn't do a lot for me even though I like many Scorcese films. The production values were high, but I just couldn't get engaged in the story and didn't find myself into the characters very much on an emotional level. (shrugs).

To me it was one of those "sum of the parts is greater than the whole" affairs. There was much I liked about it from the look, design, performances, etc; it just didn't quite gel for me. Still I liked it enough to pick up the remastered version to watch on occasion.
